6 Thoughts on Echo

Consider me among the people who wasn’t sure if an Echo spin-off series as a great idea. I enjoyed the Hawkeye TV show probably more than most people, and Echo was a fine antagonist in that series, but she wasn’t exactly a showstealer. And her character isn’t exactly all that popular or well known in the comics. But Marvel do what Marvel do, and we got ourselves an Echo TV show!

TV Show Rating: 6/10 – Pretty Good

In a change from the normal Marvel show on Disney+, all five episodes of Echo were released on the same day. Ultimately, this was a great idea, because those episodes were not meaty enough to warrant week-by-week release. I was able to binge the whole thing over a few nights and I can say I’m pleased with the final product. It’s not as bad as I feared, though it also didn’t do much to warrant existing. Still, there’s more good than bad in the first season of Echo and I wouldn’t mind seeing more — especially guest starring elsewhere.

Echo is Looking Pretty Fierce

Everybody thought Echo wasn’t going to be much of anything. Marvel is dropping all 5 episodes at the same time next Tuesday, and many took that as a sign that Marvel wanted to get rid of this show as soon as possible. But honestly, they’ve been doing a great job with promoting how badass Echo might be.

Check out this new trailer, which obviously focuses on Kingpin, but it’s still good.

And then we’ve got a behind-the-scenes featurette on how they incorporated Echo’s Native American heritage, which is cool.

I’m a fan of almost everything the MCU puts out, so I’m very much looking forward to binging Echo next week. Hopefully it lives up to the awesomeness of these promotional trailers. Keep the hope alive, everybody! Hold on to that feeling!

All 5 episodes of Echo come out on Disney+ on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

We’re Going Back to Echo

Back before Marvel Studios was having all these woes, they greenlit and filmed a new TV show about the character of Echo, who was a villain in the Hawkeye show. She’s a C-or-so-list character in the comics, and was a pretty solid part of Hawkeye, but did she need her own show? I guess we’ll find out in January!

I’m not opposed to Echo getting a show. But this feels like Marvel counting their chickens before they’re hatched. I loved the Hawkeye show, but she was hardly the most memorable part. And they don’t have the Midas Touch anymore. But the trailer looks cool, and more Kingpin and Daredevil is always welcome. So we’ll just how to see how this plays out.

Echo comes to Disney+ and I think Hulu on January 10.

6 Thoughts on the First Season of Hawkeye

I’m a couple of weeks late with this list, but time and the holidays make fools of us all. The first season of the Hawkeye TV show on Disney+ came and went and it was an utter delight! Marvel Studios is doing a wonderful job adapting their movie characters into TV shows, and I have enjoyed every one — especially Hawkeye. From just liking Clint Barton on the big screen, to looking forward to the introduction of Kate Bishop, I had high hopes for the Hawkeye show from the very beginning. And it lived up to the hype and then some.

TV Rating: 9/10 – Great.

I will admit that these Marvel shows aren’t all grand and wonderful television. There are shows that are more dramatic and engaging, shows that are more inventive. But in terms of creating enjoyable TV shows out of MCU characters and properties, these Disney+ shows — and especially Hawkeye — are doing a great job. They’re hugely fun, very entertaining, and use the characters in fun and cool ways. I think Marvel Studios is nailing it in their quest to expand onto the small screen, and I really look forward to the movies and shows interacting and intersecting even more. The pandemic pumped the brakes on that, but it’s only a matter of time.

Who’s Ready For a Whole Bunch of Hawkeye TV Casting News?

We’ve known for a while now that Disney and Marvel were working on a Hawkeye TV show. There have also been rumors about the storyline for the show and even some casting. But I don’t really like to report on rumors, especially when they’re vehemently denied by the people involved.

Welp, shooting has begun in New York City and we’ve got a whole bunch of confirmations and casting news to revel in! Turns out the Hawkeye TV show is going to feature Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton from the Avengers movies mentoring Kate Bishop, the other Hawkeye!

And Kate Bishop will be played by Hailee Steinfeld!

This hasn’t been officially confirmed by Disney, and Steinfeld did a lot of denying over the past few months, but she has now been actively spotted on set with Renner, so it’s for real.

One of the antagonists in the show will be the Clown, played by Fra Fee.

Which means the Matt Fraction Hawkeye comic will likely be an inspiration — which is good, because I consider that comic to be one of the best comics of the century so far.

We’ve also got Tony Dalton as the Swordsman, Hawkeye’s mentor when he was just starting out. So that’s pretty neat!

And likely means we’ll see plenty of flashbacks to Hawkeye getting his start as a master archer. I’m down with that.

Other casting news includes newcomer Alaqua Cox as Echo. I would have posted a picture, but I couldn’t find any images of Alaqua Cox on Google. I guess this is her first starring role. Echo is a fun character.

There’s also going to be Vera Farmiga as Kate Bishop’s mom and Zahn McClarnon as Echo’s father. So that’s nifty!

Florence Pugh’s upcoming Black Widow movie character, Yelena Belova, is also rumored to appear in the show. That is also cool! The Hawkeye TV show is shaping up to be pretty excellent. Marvel’s going to have a whole heck of a lot of fun TV shows coming! I can’t wait!
