Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/1/18
Welcome to a surprise women’s week in comic book review land! It’s a Fifth Wednesday, so there wasn’t much to choose from this week. But it just so happens that three of my favorite comics came out this week: Ms. Marvel, Runaways and X-23. And it just so happens that all three comics not only star mostly female main casts, but all three are also written by women! That’s pretty darn neat, if I do say so myself!
Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways wins Comic Book of the Week, beating out the grand finale of Power Rangers: Shattered Grid. Sorry to all Power Rangers fans.
Meanwhile, for anyone curious, we don’t yet know the fate of the Mimic in the Extermination mini-series. But there’s no way that the universe keeps one of my all-time favorite obscure comic book characters alive now that he’s been dragged out of comic book limbo. His revival from totally obscure to slightly less obscure and totally badass is probably at an end.
Comic Reviews: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – Shattered Grid #1, Ms. Marvel #33, Runaways #12 and X-23 #3.

So I own Avengers: Infinity War now. That’s something, right? Comic book-related? Ah, what do I know, let’s get to the reviews! Iron Man! Multiple Man! Batman!
Comic Book of the Week was a tough call, but I’m going to give it to the latest issue of Batman. Writer Tom King delivers a treatise on Batman’s fallibility, and that speaks to me, as he wraps up his Bruce Wayne on jury duty bit.
And the new issue of Dan Slott’s Iron Man wasn’t as amazing as the previous two issues, so Batman edges it out just a little bit.
Meanwhile, the Multiple Man Marvel Legends action figure has arrived in my crummy little apartment. I own this thing. At long last. After blog rants and hoop dreams (Google the phrase ‘Multiple Man action figure’ and my blog shows up twice), I finally own this piece of treasured memorabilia. It’s great!
Comic Reviews: Batman #53, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #30, Multiple Man #3, Thor #4 and Tony Stark – Iron Man #3.

Holy cow! San Diego Comic-Con is in full effect, with so much comic book news spiraling out that I haven’t had time to keep track of it all! Grant Morrison on a police procedural Green Lantern? Sign me up! G. Willow Wilson on Wonder Woman! Kelly Sue DeConnick on Aquaman! Christos Gage on Superior Octopus! These are gonna be some fun comics!
I skipped a couple of my regular comics this week because I was pretty busy, but I made sure to grab my favorites, like Batman, Power Rangers and Runaways. Comic Book of the Week goes to the second issue of Tony Stark – Iron Man, because I am loving this series!
Meanwhile, there was another courtroom scene in this week’s batch of comics, in Tom King’s Batman. Only this time, I didn’t have any problems with it whatsoever! Unlike that Squirrel Girl issue last week, for which I got especially nitpicky. This week’s Batman handles the courtroom scene quite well, from my experience.
Comic Reviews: Batman #51, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #29, Runaways #11, Thor #3 and Tony Stark – Iron Man #2.

It’s Comic Book Convention time again! This weekend, I’m in Syracuse, NY at the Salt City Comic-Con, showing off Gamer Girl & Vixen to a whole new audience. This is the biggest convention I’ve done solo, so wish me luck! And buy my book!
This is a pretty nifty week for comics in that I’m mostly reading big names. Avengers, Justice League, Batman, Captain America, the Hulk, Superman; where are all my obscure, niche comics? Whatever the case may be, Comic Book of the Week goes to Captain America #1 for what looks like it could be an exciting, political start.
Meanwhile, I very much enjoyed Ant-Man and the Wasp! It’s a fun and energetic movie, much like the first. The characters are a joy to watch and Ant-Man remains my favorite superhero in the MCU. I think I’ll go see it again on my day off on Monday!
Comic Reviews: Avengers #4, Batman #50, Catwoman #1, Captain American #1, Go Go Power Rangers #11, Immortal Hulk #2, Justice League #3 and Man of Steel #6.
