Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/8/22

What a week! What a week! Daredevil shows up in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law! Werewolf By Night debuts for the MCU! New Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer! Life is good for us comic book geeks! Made even better by some excellent comics, like Ant-Man and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #128 because I am a sucker for good Batman and Robin writing, and a sucker for amazing, action-packed comics!

Martian Manhunter gets no respect

Meanwhile, that Daredevil episode was definitely the best episode of She-Hulk yet! And we’ve seen so little from the finale that I have no idea what’s coming next! Should be great! The whole show has been perfect! And I started playing TemTem because I needed something to play, and it’s pretty fun, if low key, so far. I’m also on the hunt for a Playstation 5 ahead of some upcoming games. Wish me luck!

Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #4, Batman #128, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/1/22

For once, I have more than just two or so comics to read and review this week! And yet I’m still not branching out as much as I’d like to non-superhero stuff. I haven’t even read 8 Billion Genies yet! That’s supposed to be very good. At least Ant-Man and Thunderbolts are also very good, as is the first issue of Tim Drake: Robin.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100 for a pretty excellent, perfectly paced and powered, big anniversary issue.

Always a classic

Meanwhile, I’m just about ready to start hunting in earnest for an artist for my next comic book project, Cover Bard. So if you are a comic book artist looking for work or you know one who is, drop me a line and we might be in business!

Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #3, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100, Thunderbolts #2, Tim Drake: Robin #1 and X-Men #15.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/3/22

Happy Birthday to me! Not yet, of course. It won’t be until Tuesday — and I’ve got a big announcement to make! — but this is the comics review column ahead of my birthday, so why not say something? Life is fun that way. And comics were fun this week! Including the launch of a new Thunderbolts and another great issue of The Variants.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Ant-Man #2 for how much fun this anniversary series has been, really reaching back into the past and capturing the era-specific magic of guys like Eric O’Grady in his heyday.

My thoughts exactly

Meanwhile, I’m deep into Total War: Warhammer 3 these days, loving the new factions and the giant map. Glad to finally be playing Immortal Empires! I’ve also gotten around to watching Paper Girls on Amazon Prime and it is a real letdown. It feels like an early 2000s Nickelodeon take on the material.

Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #2, Thunderbolts #1 and The Variants #3.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/30/22

Pretty light week for comics for me, just a couple of Marvel comics to get me through the week. Fortunately, they’re all really banging, like The Variants and a new Ant-Man mini-series.

Comic book of the Week goes to Amazing Spider-Man #900 for a truly special and enjoyable anniversary issue. I hope this is a sign of what we can expect from these creators going forward.

It all makes sense in context

Meanwhile, the Harley Quinn cartoon is back and I love it! The first few episodes of season 3 are out and they’re just as good as the first two seasons. Can’t wait for more! And I just finished Severance on AppleTV+ last night, and it lives up to all the hype I’ve been hearing. Crazy show! Also, DC League of Super-Pets is boring as hell and nobody should bother with it, unless you need to entertain young children.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #900, Ant-Man #1 and The Variants #2.

6 Things I Want to See in the Shang-Chi Movie

The first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrived earlier this week and it looked awesome! It’s the next new Marvel movie after Black Widow, scheduled to come out on Sept. 3 — only a few days before my birthday! So all signs point to the Shang-Chi film looking great! There’s no reason to doubt that Marvel isn’t going to knock another one out of the park.

But here’s the thing: I know very little about Shang-Chi and have little interest in his comic history.

Despite being a lifelong comic book fan, I simply have no history with Shang-Chi. By the time I started reading comics in the 1990s, the Kung Fu fascination was long gone and Shang-Chi was nobody. I think he’s a great choice for Marvel’s first leading Asian character. And the trailer looks like Marvel went all-in on the classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema. That sounds great! But not being a fan of Shang-Chi in the comics, I’m not even sure what I want to see in the new film…but I’m going to give it a shot anyway!

Join me after the jump for six things I want to see in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
