Awesome Deadpool Fan Film

If my life had gone in different directions, such as being a film student and having access to film equipment and actor friends, I could easily see myself making superhero fan films. It looks like a lot of fun! Especially in this epic Deadpool fan film, which perfectly nails the character and has a blast in the process. Give it up for the creative people of Bean Di Productions for Deadpool: A Typical Tuesday!

The News with an Autotuner

From the depths of the Internet, we’ve dredged up something truly special for you this morning. From youtube artist Schmoyoho, these are just part of a series of videos called “Songify This!”

The local news, random internet videos–everything is fair game for this group and their auto-tuner.

World of Ultron-Warcraft

We may only be halfway through Avengers vs. X-Men, but you better believe that’s not going to stop Marvel Comics from teasing their next big Event Comic! AvX has to stop at some point, right? And Marvel still wants our money, right?

Well say hello to today’s new teasers!

Watch out, Thor!

Oh no, Wolverine!

So I guess both Thor and Wolverine survive Avengers vs. X-Men, at least.

Anyway! What could those teasers possibly mean? How about the infinitely hyped Ultron War that Marvel has been working on in secret for the past year or so. It was the focus of this year’s Free Comic Book Day issue, and both writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Bryan Hitch (one of my faves) have mentioned it as part of their final Marvel blowout. Hitch has left the company, and Bendis is leaving The Avengers series. Ultron War has been hinted at in Avengers comics, Captain America and I think even Iron Man.

So yeah, that’s my prediction for what these trailers mean. I’m sure we’ll learn more at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con when it rolls around next month. I think it’ll be a pretty cool story. It’ll be nice for the heroes to fight villains for a change, and a villain that matters. Ultron is a true classic villain. Not like the Serpent who showed up in last year’s Fear Itself, who showed up, did nothing and got defeated. Yawn.

Bring on the Ultron War!

One of the Greatest Nerd Fears…

Is that writer George R. R. Martin will not finish the Game of Thrones book series before he dies. The guy is super old, he takes forever between books (each of which is several hundred pages), and he’s still got two whole books to go in the series before he says it’ll be complete. Not to mention the fact that HBO now has a TV show that takes one year to turn one book into one season, and it’s already got two seasons down! Well the musical guys at Geeks & Sundry have put together an entertaining little ditty to try and light a fire under Martin’s ass! It’s quite catchy – and don’t worry, no spoilers for the show or books!

Review: Brave

Pixar’s Brave is a beautifully-rendered tale about a mother and daughter that has a lot of heart, but then takes a few missteps that keep it from achieving true greatness. The kids will love this film due to an overreliance on slapstick comedy. But I’m not a fan, so a lot of the comedy was just a drag to me. Fortunately, the drama is very well done, as is the emotional story between Princess Merida and her mother the Queen. And along with the depth of character, a wonderful visual style, the cornucopia of Scottish accents, and all around skilled craftsmanship, Brave is another fine addition to Pixar’s library.

Unfortunately, what starts out as a pretty great film suddenly veers into absurdism about a third of the way through. But this change is so integral to the story of Brave that the entire experience suffers. I am willing to accept that everybody else may love what happens, but I found it to be incredibly silly.

Movie rating: 4/5: Good!

There will be SPOILERS in my review, so I don’t want to give away what this change is in this opening segment. But it’s just so ridiculous that I think it detracts from the very point of the film. The plot is about Merida and her mother coming to understand one another, but the story of how they get there actually takes away from the overall film. It’s weird. I feel like the people at Pixar should have been able to do a better job in telling the story. I don’t think expecting greatness from Pixar is out of the question. They’re Pixar, for crying out loud! And there are hints at greatness throughout Brave. As if someone, somewhere wrote an amazing mother/daughter story set in ancient Scotland…only for somebody else to come along to throw a bunch of weirdness and slapstick comedy into the mix.

I would expect this kind of thing from Laika Entertainment, but not from Pixar. That link takes you to the trailer for Paranorman, one that the theater aired before Brave. I can’t remember a more pathetic, unfunny, by-the-numbers movie trailer. They wish they were as good as Pixar.

Also, I saw the film (reluctantly) in 3D. It neither adds nor detracts from the overall experience. Another pointless use of the gimmick.
