Skull and Bones is Really Coming, and is Maybe Good?

Once upon a time, the video game company Ubisoft accidentally created a series of side missions that ended up being as good as, if not better, than the game they were attached to. They took their Assassin’s Creed games and added naval warfare that was super, duper fun! They started it in Assassin’s Creed 3, and then perfected it and made it a bigger deal in the pirate-themed Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. I was there when those games came out and they were incredible experiences!

So, like intelligent people, they decided to take that already developed game mechanic and turn it into its own original game, Skull and Bones! But that was a decade ago, and the game notoriously faced insane delays.

Until…now? Behold, a full gameplay trailer for Skull and Bones!

I think that trailer looks great! The game is due to come out in mid-February, and there’s already a closed beta, with people posting their reactions online…and I’m hearing good things! They didn’t completely recreate Black Flag because, apparently, you can’t take your character and board the other ships like an assassin. But the naval combat is there, as is the ship customization, and those are good! So I’m honestly considering getting Skull and Bones, we’ll have to see. I’ll probably wait for full game reviews, and probably a sale, so…we’ll see? That trailer looks great, at least.

Skull and Bones is due to come out on Feb. 16!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/16/23

By this time next week, I will be on the road for the family Christmas getaway! Should be a blast! But until then, we’ve got a few comics to read, though this was one of those very light weeks for me.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Outsiders #2 because it was marginally better than the only other comic I read this week. Also, this is a cool sea monster design.

Meanwhile, I finished off Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which ended rather anticlimactically. I then splurged on Super Mario Wonder as my last video game purchase for a while (gotta save money). Haven’t played it yet, but I’m quite excited. I also watched Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix this past week and it was pretty amazing! So consider that a big recommendation.

Comic Reviews: Captain America #4 and Outsiders #2.

Movie Trailer Friday

A couple movie trailers rolled out this week and I’m finally getting around to rounding them up and sharing them with you all. Are they interesting movies? Probably not. Will I watch any of them? Maybe at some point!

First up is the trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4! Who knew that was happening?

I’m not impressed, but at the same time, I know that the Kung Fu Panda movies deliver. They are great movies that still hold up. So will they keep that greatness going for a fourth? Or is this just a desperate attempt to cash in on the franchise name? I’m a big Awkwafina fan, so it’s fun to see her show up. But where are the Furious Five?! I guess we’ll see.

Kung Fu Panda 4 comes to theaters on March 8.

Next up is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the legacy sequel to those original Beverly Hills Cop movies.

I didn’t see the original Beverly Hills Cop movies until well into adulthood, so I have no nostalgic connection to this series. I have no memory of those movies either. The only things I remember about Beverly Hills Cop are the bits from The Clerks cartoon show, so yeah. But hey, I like modern day Eddie Murphy, and he’s had good luck teaming up with Netflix. So maybe it’ll be fun.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F comes to Netflix next summer.

Lastly, the new John Krasinski joint, If, about imaginary friends.

I didn’t like the look of this trailer, and not just because it’s a Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends rip-off. It’s that moment when the little girl tells the big, purple If not to say the word ‘ifs’ when he’s answering her question, leading to that really weird, strained moment. But ‘ifs’ is the answer to her direct question, and clearly the word he was going to say. So why would she tell him not to say the obvious answer?! Just for that unfunny strained moment?! What’s going on?

Anyway, If comes to…I think theaters…on May 17.

6 Things I Want to See in a Third Star Wars Jedi Game

I finally beat Star Wars Jedi: Survivor this past weekend, and the game was mostly a lightsaber parts collection game for me. I love building my own lightsaber, especially when I’m provided with a catalogue of existing parts that I can mix and match. My mental design game isn’t so great as to design one from scratch, but when I’ve got parts? You best believe I’m gonna make something fun and cherish it greatly!

Anyway, what were we talking about?

Boy, lightsaber, tiny cute droid sidekick

The Star Wars Jedi games are fun. You’re a largely generic Jedi named Cal Kestis as he carves his way through Stormtroopers and leftover battle droids, set about a decade before A New Hope. He’s got his own cast of characters, hanging out on their own planets, in largely self-contained adventures. They’re pretty fun, but in my opinion, nothing remarkable. They’re also popular enough to warrant a threequel, and based on what I just played, I have some story ideas and other things I’d like to see in a third installment of this series.

So join me after the jump for six things I want to see in our next Cal Kestis adventure. Expect SOME SPOILERS for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as I cobble this list together. And feel free to share your own hopes and dreams in the comments below.

A New Mr. & Mrs. Smith, For the Fun Of It

Amazon Prime is going to make a new Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV show, possibly just for the heck of it? I just did a Wikipedia search and apparently the original movie, an Alfred Hitchcock comedy from 1941, had nothing to do with spies? And then there was a TV series that was about spies in 1996, and then I don’t think either had anything to do with the more well known Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie in 2005.

I have no idea what this “franchise” is about…but I do know that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine sounds like a great casting!

Honestly, I’m really only interested in watching this show because of those two. Donald Glover needs no introduction, so he should be great. And then Maya Erskine has been kicking all sorts of ass. She burst onto the scene with Pen15, which is great. And she keeps showing up in stuff I enjoy, like the 2019 movie Plus One, which is a super fun romcom. Then she had a small role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show. And just last night I discovered that she plays the main character in the new Netflix anime Blue Eye Samurai, which I’m loving so far!

So yeah, I’m kinda into this show to see Maya Erskine kicking more ass. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is going to kick off on Amazon Prime on Feb. 2.
