There’s a New Season of Game Changer on the Way!

Made you look! Now that you’ve started reading this blog post, I’m going to pivot real quick and make another call to action to head over to the Museum of the Uncanny Kickstarter to back this awesome project from some awesome comic creators! It’s the last day and we’re making a made dash to raise the money to make this anthology of awesome, spooky comic stories!

Now that you’re back from the Kickstarter, here’s the actual trailer for season 8 of Game Changer on Dropout.

I’m a huge fan of Dropout and Game Changer. Been a subscriber since the platform launched, spinning out of College Humor. And I’m so glad to see that it has reached mainstream appeal, even if it’s mostly through TikTok shorts or whatever. Watch however you want! But it’s definitely worth the incredibly cheap monthly subscription fee. Lots of great shows on Dropout!

And arguably the best one, Game Changer, returns with new episodes on May 18.

It’s Possible We Never Get an Actual Punisher Adaptation

After appearing in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, the Punisher is going to get his own special presentation in a couple of months. Jon Bernthal is one of the creative minds behind this mini-movie, and we’ve got our first trailer. It’s gonna be called The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Why is it so hard to just make a show or movie or special presentation where the Punisher kills bad dudes? Where he dresses in his costume and kills sex traffickers and we all cheer? And there’s a little existential dread, but not too much?

I dunno. This looks fine. Should be fun. I’ll watch whatever they put out. Just somebody make an adaptation of The Slavers, dammit!

The Punisher: One Last Kill comes to Disney+ on May 12…which is only a single month away! Great!

They Are Definitely Making a Harry Potter TV Show

We knew it was coming. There was no stopping it. There’s money to be made! Just not by me. That new Harry Potter TV show on HBO has a trailer.

I think they could have made a better trailer. Like…we all know Harry Potter. We all know the big scenes and the movies and the characters and stuff. Would it have been weird to make a trailer that just sort of…recreates those famous scenes, but with the new actors? This trailer seems like a real trailer, as if teasing a brand new project…but then also not…it’s weird. Or maybe my cold is just fogging my brain just enough that I’m not getting it.

It all looks fine to me. I’ll probably watch. I like Nick Frost. I hope the kids involved are OK. J.K. Rowling sucks.

The Harry Potter TV show — full title being Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, because of course — will arrive around Christmas.

I Still Think Darth Maul is Cool

There’s a new Darth Maul cartoon coming out in three weeks — Darth Maul: Shadow Lord. It’s set during the Empire, with Darth Maul fighting back because he’s angry. Maybe he’s a crime lord? I dunno. It’s Darth Maul fighting Stormtroopers to some extent. Long before he shows up in Rebels. Maybe before he shows up in Solo? Who can tell.

I think it looks cool and fun. Am I on the edge of my seat? Nah. That’s just not me anymore for anything (except maybe GTA 6). But I’ll gladly watch a new Darth Maul cartoon. I still think he’s cool. I’m still on board for new Star Wars content. And I’m definitely on board with Darth Maul taking a Jedi sidekick to cut down Stormtroopers and fight the Empire. Could be fun.

Darth Maul: Shadow Lord will have 10 episodes on Disney+, starting on April 6.

So They’re Trying to Make a Firefly Animated Show…

For a few weeks now, Firefly actor Nathan Fillion has been posting a series of Instagram thingies where he gathers together the cast of Firefly for a new project. It was all a big tease, and it definitely worked on me. I was getting my hopes up for a revival show. Those are all the rage these days, even if I haven’t watched the new season of Scrubs. But I would definitely be down for a Firefly revival where all the old people must reunite for one last job.

Well the big reveal was earlier today, and it’s that they’re trying to make an animated revival.

Emphasis on “trying”.

So the announcement is that they’ve got a script, they’ve got some showrunners and they’ve got the cast on board…but they don’t have a show. They don’t have a studio pickup. And they’re actively asking fans to boost their social media to show studios that the support is there.

Here’s my deal…I’m all for this. I would have preferred a live action show, but an animated revival is fine too. More power to everyone involved in making this happen.

But I think they’ve really jumped the gun.

I don’t know how Hollywood works, but none of these actors/showrunners could secure even a pilot order before making this announcement? They couldn’t have waited until they had one of those secured? Nobody has strings to pull or enough money in the bank to even do some real design items?

That artwork is nonsense. The art itself is fine, to be sure, but it’s just a couple drawings of the characters in their classic outfits. There’s no style to it, no sense of animation. When was the last time you saw an animated show that was so photorealistic? They wouldn’t come up with an actual design style for the show yet? They couldn’t come up with an amateur animation reel to show off for how they want the show to look?

There have been countless Firefly comics in the past few years, and all that artwork looks like is just another comic book pitch. That is not concept art for an actual animated series. I am an amateur comic book maker, and even I know enough artists out in the world who could actual give that sort of artwork some personality. I know enough artists out there who could put together some basic animation for a good price.

Instead, we’re just got a random drawing of a couple of the characters and the promise that they’re trying to make a show. They jumped the gun.

Considering the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival didn’t make it past the pilot stage, even with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chloe Zhao attached, the chance for an animated Firefly revival looks pretty grim.

But c’mon, when the Critical Role people can get four seasons of two different shows, you’re telling me none of the people involved in this Firefly revival could get any solid footing before making this announcement?

I am going to properly calibrate my enthusiasm for this one. But again, more power to them.
