Disney Should Just Remake Star Wars: A New Hope

Remakes of the original three Star Wars movies are inevitable. I assumed this was the case even before Disney bought Star Wars and started launching a million new movies. Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood. Tons of movies are remakes, even films you wouldn’t expect. Scarface is a remake.

So the idea that somebody in Hollywood was going to remake the original Star Wars trilogy someday down the line isn’t too far-fetched.

I just think Disney should do it sooner rather than later.

Time to re-examine some sacred cows

Solo: A Star Wars Story came out this past weekend and establishes the strongest reason why Disney should just remake A New Hope: Han Solo has been recast.

Between Rogue One and now Solo, Disney could very well be building a new Star Wars Cinematic Universe. There’s plenty of talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi stand alone film, with Ewan McGregor returning for the role, as well as a Boba Fett stand alone film. And Princess Leia made a quick appearance in Rogue One, albeit via CGI Carrie Fisher. James Earl Jones is still alive.

Think about it: recast Leia and then digitally insert the new actor over the Carrie CGI in Rogue One. Then cast a new Luke Skywalker and you’ve got all the makings for a modern update to A New Hope, one that ties directly into all of the other Star Wars media that has come out since.

The Millennium Falcon of Solo and the new trilogy, with all its speed and swooping, is way way different than the Millennium Falcon we got in the original movie. If nothing else, that can be updated.

The original Falcon never had this kind of fun!

Some might call this sacrilege, but would it really be any different from what Disney is already doing by flooding the market with new Star Wars films? The originals will always be great, but if they really want to take full advantage of all these spin-offs and all these new and old actors who are still around, a full remake of A New Hope — and possibly even the entire trilogy — is definitely in order.

The pieces are almost already in place. Someone just has to make it happen.

Only Leigh Watches Star Wars Movies!

I went and saw Solo: A Star Wars Story last night and it was pretty fun. The world didn’t need a Han Solo origin story, but it’s here anyway, and it’s entertaining. It’s basically your standard heist flick, complete with close calls, double crosses and clever twists. Then it’s flavored with all the fun Star Wars stuff, like spaceships, blasters, droids and Chewbacca. Honestly, Chewbacca should be all you need.

Internet favorite Only Leigh also has some thoughts on watching a Star Wars movie!

Like all of us, she is trapped in the endless deluge of new Star Wars movies. Just yesterday they finally announced the Boba Fett movie (which I actually want to see). None of us will live to see the final Star Wars movie.

Think about that. If there is ever a true final Star Wars movie, the planet Earth will be populated by an entirely new population of people than what exists right now.

The Young Star Wars Movie I Want

Solo: A Star Wars Story has gotten some positive reviews heading into the weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing the flick. Personally, I think Star Wars is stretching itself a bit too thin. Nobody was asking for a movie about a young Han Solo. That they’ve made a perfectly entertaining movie about it is fine, but just because you can make such a movie doesn’t mean you should.

That aside, if Disney and Lucasfilm are looking into some side stories from Star Wars to turn into movies, I have one really awesome suggestion: young Mace Windu.

Young Star Wars 01

Why is there no Samuel L. Jackson TV show yet?

I’ve mentioned this idea on my blog before, but I want to expand on how awesome that whole era could be. The general idea is to take everything we learned about the Jedi Order and the Jedi Temple in the prequels and apply it to characters we already know. Who cares about the younglings and Padawans from the Temple in the prequels? They all die!

But how about following the temple/school lives of characters like Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Count Dooku and more! Basically, what were our favorite Jedi characters like in high school?

Young Star Wars 02

A young Christopher Lee

Think about it: pretty much all of the adult characters we met in the prequels had to have known each other and been around each other almost their entire lives. We only saw them in adulthood or old age. What were they like, what was life for them like, only 20 or 30 years prior?

Surely the likes of Mace and Qui-Gon came up through the Temple together, possibly alongside other contemporaries like Plo Koon, Adi Gallia or Shaak Ti. Who was on the Jedi Council when they were teenagers? Did anybody see greatness in store for these young Jedi? What was it like when they were chosen as Padawans?

What was Yoda like when interacting with these kids? Did he foresee that young Mace Windu was such an awesome Jedi that he would pretty much equal Yoda in importance one day? What is life like for that kid?

Where does he get that purple lightsaber? Surely there’s a story to be told! If we need a movie that explains how Han Solo got his blaster, we also need a movie about how Mace Windu got his purple lightsaber.

Young Star Wars 03

Do we know anything about why it’s purple?

And you can expand beyond that core group as well. Obi-Wan Kenobi was likely in youngling classes during this period. Why not a cameo?

Sheev Palpatine was probably already involved in politics at that point, a young senator or maybe clerical aide from Naboo. What was he like as a young man? And you can introduce his mentor, Darth Plagueis, and whatever shenanigans Plagueis was getting up to as a Sith who accomplished nothing. Maybe they’ve even recruited a young Darth Maul by that point. Do we know when that happened?

I think this would be a really fascinating and entertaining time period to explore. Obviously there wouldn’t be any Skywalkers to focus on, and the galaxy was pretty stable, but they could still have all manner of awesome Jedi adventures. There could be plenty of stories of how the Jedi grew more and more stagnant, how the dark forces worked on them from the outside, and even more personal stories about differing philosophies between young men and women who would soon grow to become the most powerful and influential Jedi in the galaxy.

Why was Qui-Gon Jinn some kind of wandering zen rebel, while Mace Windu was a by-the-books council member with the only purple lightsaber in the galaxy?

There’s an interesting story there, I just know it!

Now, some of you might say that we don’t need to bother ourselves with that era. Those characters are done, leave them be. But to that I’d say that Disney is clearly looking for anything Star Wars to put out. We’re getting a young Han Solo movie. We’ve had two multi-season cartoons that took a hard look at some time periods, with a third on the way. We’ve got a live action TV show coming, along with a new trilogy separate from the main trilogy. Clearly we’re eager for anything Star Wars we can get.

And I think this era could be a lot of fun!

If You’ve Got Ron Howard, Use Him

Ron Howard was brought in to re-direct Solo: A Star Wars Story. So somebody at Star Wars decided to put him to good use with a nifty Arrested Development parody.

That’s good stuff. Easily my favorite trailer for Solo yet!

Star Wars: Resistance Revealed!

The next Star Wars animated series has been announced! Star Wars: Resistance will take place in the period before The Force Awakens and will focus on badass fighter pilots! Always a fun topic!

Star Wars Resistance 01

I loved The Clone Wars and Rebels was pretty darn good, so clearly the people behind these animated shows — like Dave Filoni — know what they’re doing. I’m definitely on board.

The new show will star fighter pilot Kazuda Xiono, who is recruited by the Resistance to spy on the First Order. We’ll get cameos from BB-8, Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma. That sounds pretty neat. Finn and Rey are probably way out of the loop, but eh, they get that whole first movie.

Han Solo and Chewbacca are also cruising around the galaxy during this period. So who knows what we’ll see!

Definitely looking forward to this one.
