Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/2/19

Oh what a world, what a world! I was swamped at work this week, so I didn’t have time to read too many comics. Fortunately, it was a Fifth Wednesday situation, so there weren’t many comics to worry about anyway!

Excalibur arrives to continue Dawn of X, and it’s fine. Runaways has a quiet issue that just moves the story along. And Mighty Morphin Power Rangers wins Comic Book of the Week for another exciting issue!

I need Omega Pink to happen

Meanwhile, I’ve been reading through Brian Michael Bendis’ Daredevil for the first time ever. It’s pretty good! And in comic book movie news, we have confirmation of Into the Spider-Verse 2 and Ant-Man 3! That’s pretty exciting!

Comic Reviews: Excalibur #1, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #44 and Runaways #26.

What a weekend to be alive! Not only do we have some good comics this week, but I also just picked up the The Outer Worlds video game. I’m having a ton of fun with it so far! Not only that, but we’ve also finally got new episodes of BoJack Horseman to watch! I’m over the moon this weekend!

Comic book wise, Dawn of X brings us the first issue of the Marauders, which is as fun as the rest of the relaunch has been. The Amazing Mary Jane has also arrived, and it’s fine. Comic Book of the Week goes to another stellar issue of Tony Stark – Iron Man, which might not make headlines but is still one of the best comics on the stands.

With dry, cool wit like that…

Meanwhile, Absolute Carnage continues to be a fun series. I read the latest issue last week, and it’s good, though I think it’s a little too limited in scope. It seems like a pretty self-contained story. The Scream tie-in mini also came to a pretty dull ending, but I’m going to remain generally hopeful for her upcoming ongoing series. Surely it exists for a reason, right?

Comic Reviews: Amazing Mary Jane #1, King Thor #2, Marauders #1, Tony Stark – Iron Man #17 and Valkyrie #4.

It’s gonna be a short list of reviews this week, henchies, because your buddy is on vacation! And I dunno, I didn’t feel like reading a whole stack of comics, like usual. But I did read a couple, and they were some real dingers.

Look at this list: three comics that pretty much define the entire comic book industry. Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. No fancy adjectives. No major crossovers. Just simple comics. One is OK, one is terrible and the third, X-Men #1, is pretty darn good. I am still excited for Dawn of X! It gets Comic Book of the Week.

The state of X-Men comics at the tail end of 2019

Meanwhile, when I didn’t read the stack of newly released comics, I have been spending my time catching up on larger collections. I read the latest volume of Empowered, and it was a real barn burner! Is anybody else reading Empowered? I want to do a feature post on it someday. And I read through all of Paper Girls now that it’s complete. Really fun story. Also highly recommended.

Comic Reviews: Batman #81, Spider-Man #2 and X-Men #1.

What a great week for comics! I love a week where my favorites all come out at the same time, like Squirrel Girl, Wonder Twins and Go Go Power Rangers! To say nothing of more Gwenpool and the start of a nifty new Doctor Doom comic!

Comic Book of the Week goes, once again, to the big Powers of X/House of X series. The issue itself is really enjoyable, and the way it caps everything off and creates even more promise for the future is phenomenal. This has been a weird relaunch, but an exciting one!

Xavier Lose 01

Don’t look so sad about it

Meanwhile, Event Leviathan is still really good. I’m rather excited about the potential going forward…but I don’t know if this whole event will get wrapped up in the next issue, or if this is indeed the start of a whole new status quo for DC Comics. I suppose we’ll find out! And I’ll probably be fine with either.

Comic Reviews: Doctor Doom #1, Go Go Power Rangers #24, Gwenpool Strikes Back #3, Powers of X #6, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #49 and Wonder Twins #8.

6 Thoughts on Joker

I am 100% in favor of DC Comics and Warner Bros. breaking away from the Marvel Moviemaking Mold and going in their own direction. I’m all in favor of them doing stand alone, psychological movies or stand alone comedies or stand alone superhero movies. As long as they keep putting out good, solid movies, I’ll probably be happy. But considering that it’s DC and Warner Bros., there’s always the chance they’ll put out a movie I don’t like — which brings us to Joker.

Joker Review List 01

Movie Rating: 5/10 – Alright.

My movie reviews are 100% subjective. I’m not a film critic. I didn’t study film. I couldn’t tell you anything about cinematography and how it effects whatever. I watch movies to be entertained and enjoy a good story and performances. That’s how I judge movies, and it’s entirely on me. And with that in mind, Joker is not my kind of movie. It’s not what I’m looking for, it’s not something I enjoyed. I just didn’t like Joker, but I can recognize that it was a well-made film that successfully gets its message across.

Join me after the jump for my full thoughts on why I didn’t like it, but still understand it!
