Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/28/21
In one week, I will have seen Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The wait is excruciating! So let’s read some comics to pass the time! Like Superman: Son of Kal-El and something to do with Thor!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Darkhawk #1 for a solid, enjoyable introduction to the new Darkhawk — even if the world wasn’t calling out for a new Darkhawk.
Meanwhile, I just finished the zombie show Kingdom on Netflix and it was amazing! I love me a good zombie show, but couldn’t care less about The Walking Dead anymore. But Kingdom was some epic stuff and highly recommended. It’s a zombie show set in feudal Korea. So we’re talking ancient weaponry, ancient defenses, when dealing with a zombie horde, plus a ton of political intrigue and fun characters. This was a good show and gets my highest recommendation.
Comic Reviews: Darkhawk #1, Strange Academy #12, Superman: Son of Kal-El #2, and Thor #16.

It’s a sad week for comics as a couple of good comics come to an end. But I’ve got another short week, so the sting wasn’t too bad. Still, Children of the Atom is ending too soon. But at least Might Morphin is firing on all cylinders!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Runaways #38 because it’s the final issue. Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways has probably been my favorite comic at Marvel for years now. It’s such a wonderful character-focused book. But the pandemic hit it hard. I’m very sad to see it go…especially considering all the ways it ends!
Meanwhile, I loved the first episode of What If…?. It was a fun, little jaunt of adventure. The animation really took me by surprise, especially the action scenes. Holy wowzers that was some good action! I’m definitely looking forward to more of the show now. And this weekend is also the open beta for Back 4 Blood. I was a big Left 4 Dead man back in the day, and I’m having a blast getting back into that saddle.
Comic Reviews: Children of the Atom #6, Mighty Morphin #10 and Runaways #38.

The long wait is over and The Suicide Squad has arrived. Not to be confused with Suicide Squad from a couple of years ago. This is a sequel/relaunch and obviously much, much better. James Gunn wrote and directed this new film, and I’m as big a James Gunn fan as everybody else. So I had high hopes for this film and all of them were met and/or exceeded!
Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great.
Take a bunch of unimportant C and D-list supervillains from the annals of DC Comics and put them on a team of black ops specialists is a great idea. They’ve been making fun Suicide Squad comics for years. The team has shown up in the DC cartoons and the DC live action shows. They’re a pretty impressive crew. So it’s a shame that The Suicide Squad has bombed at the box office. We’re definitely never getting a sequel now. C’est la vie.
Join me after the jump for my thoughts/review of The Suicide Squad. And expect FULL SPOILERS for the movie.

This is an interesting week in comics because I only have two to read and review! I’ve started to cut back on how many comics I read a week because sometimes I just don’t want to read everything on my plate, you know? I lost interest in the new Green Lantern series when it blew up the status quo, and I just wasn’t hooked on Crush and Lobo. But that’s perfectly fine when we’ve got new issues of Batman and X-Men!
Comic Book of the Week goes to X-Men #2 for another big screen comic book story. I like the look and feel of this comic, and I hope they can maintain and transition into more long-form enjoyment.
Meanwhile, I loved The Suicide Squad movie and will have my thoughts/review on Wednesday! I’m also loving the New Pokemon Snap free DLC and, oddly enough, I got back into playing Diablo 3 to try out some things I left undone years ago. That’s been neat.
Comic Reviews: Batman #111 and X-Men #2.
