Review: Prometheus
I have never seen Alien. So I can’t tell you whether or not Prometheus works as a prequel. But I can tell you that Prometheus absolutely doesn’t work as a stand alone movie. All the hype, all the anticipation, and all we get is a very standard action movie with no surprises, no scares and nothing we haven’t seen before. I don’t care if it’s directed by the legendary Ridley Scott, or that he’s revisiting his most classic sci-fi film. Apparently he’s lost his touch.
Prometheus asks all these big questions about the origins of the human race and where we come from, but then answers them with standard movie violence.
Movie rating: 3/5: Alright.
I can’t bring myself to say that Prometheus is a bad movie. It’s competently made, looks cool and has enough action and Idris Elba to keep someone entertained. But the film has so many plot holes and contrivances that I can’t consider it a good movie. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I also can’t imagine it answering too many questions about the Alien franchise. Everything we learn about the aliens and the Engineers in this movie is just boring and ho-hum. We don’t learn anything about the origins of the human race. And the big moment where it looks like we might see something new, Scott just inserts more needless, pointless violence.
The characters are paper thin, the designs are dark and murky, the aliens are wildly inconsistent and some of the twists just don’t make any sense. I expected much more from Prometheus, but got so much less.
Spoilers and more after the jump.
I Already Love Wreck-It Ralph!
Oh my God, you guys! Not only is the next Disney animation movie going to be about video games, but they have secured the rights to actual classic video game characters! So new guy Wreck-It Ralph is going to be starring alongside the likes of Bowser, Dr. Robotnik and Clyde!
That trailer looks awesome! Granted, parts of it look kind of stupid, falling in line with today’s usually unfunny humor. But other parts of it look awesome! Regular guy video game baddie decides to try out other games, sounds neat! I actually liked this trailer more than any of the trailers for Pixar’s Brave. Though that’s just silly, because no doubt a Pixar movie will be a million times better than a Disney movie.
Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3!
Check out a surprise villain who is going to appear in the upcoming Iron Man 3.
That red, white and blue ensemble is the Iron Patriot armor, which was worn in the comics by Norman Osborn when he temporarily took over from Nick Fury as head of SHIELD. Yeah, weird story, but basically Osborn had everybody convinced he was a good guy and Iron Man was a bad guy, and so they let him have access to Iron Man’s armor. He took one suit and painted it red, white and blue, because Norman Osborn is a bastard.
But there is no way in the 49 moons of Jupiter that Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) is going to appear in an Iron Man movie. Nope, according to the website What Would Tyler Durden Do, who took the set pictures, that is actor James Badge Dale in the armor. Dale is playing the super-villain Coldblood, who was another armored or at least cybernetic Iron Man villain from the comics. Coldblood is hardly iconic or even memorable, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers simply give him a new origin and a new modus operandi. Would wearing the Iron Patriot armor be that new Coldblood style?
Personally, I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the armor is actually going to be Detroit Steel, a newer character who also wears red, white and blue armor. Steel is a product of Justin Hammer’s company, an attempt to build a replacement for Iron Man who is beholden to the government. Though Detroit Steel is kind of a big, bulky metal monster.
Still, Hollywood isn’t exactly going to make that monstrosity to get Detroit Steel accurate. So maybe they’ll streamline Steel into these set photos. It’s probably not going to happen, but I want to at least be the first one to suggest it!
Detroit Steel for Iron Man 3! You heard it here first!
New Spidey Trailer Reveals Movie Still Coming Out
There’s a new international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man, and it continues to be nothing impressive. I’m more annoyed than intrigued about the big secrets that are supposed to be revealed about Spidey’s parents and probably his origins. And that one crack about his weakness being “small knives” only gets worse with repeated usage. Basically it’s just yet another trailer with a few tiny scraps of new footage that simply don’t alter my assumptions about this movie. Still gonna see it though!
Batman Commercials Better Than Batman Trailer
Whereas the first two The Dark Knight Rises trailers were kind of somber and low key, the first two TV commercials for the upcoming film are a lot more badass, with some nice humor mixed in. I fully expect more of a somber movie when it’s finally released, but that somber thing hasn’t really been stoking the flames of excitement. So enjoy these commercials! Though there are some slight spoilers for the movie, I think. At least some facts/plot points that I didn’t know previously – though they don’t ruin the movie.
