I’m a Little Ashamed That I Don’t Know More about Pacific Rim

I don’t know how I missed so much of the early hype and explanation of Pacific Rim, having only really found out when I watched a teaser trailer at random a few weeks ago. But this movie was made for me!

Giant monsters! Mech suits! A super sci-fi modern take on Godzilla movies! GLaDOS doing the voice of the computer! I’m in Nerd Heaven! Not to mention how much this movie likes like Evangelion, though I never watched. But surely some nerds are super thrilled. I know somewhere in the back of my mind I’d heard that Guillermo del Toro was making a movie called Pacific Rim. But I never bothered to care what it was about. I mean, c’mon, what kind of name is ‘Pacific Rim’ for this kind of movie? Stupid!

And here I thought there were enough movies coming out in 2013 to get excited about.

Here’s a synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

That sounds completely insane! But it’s still going to exist!

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a New Man of Steel Trailer

What better way to celebrate Assassin’s Creed Week than with a new Man of Steel trailer! Because this full trailer just came out today!

Now that’s one meaty movie trailer! I’m actually rather pleased to see that the next Superman movie isn’t just going to be an action/explosion fest. Looks like we might actually get some kind of deep exploration of Superman as a person and the responsibilities of his power. Call me a geek if you want, but that sounds fascinatingly fun! This trailer is definitely a winner.

Bane Has Never Been More Fun

Just a bit of silliness to start your Saturday. I loved Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. That voice is just so much fun. This video was brought to us by the Auralnauts.

Star Trek Into Teaser Trailers

No sooner do we get a movie poster than Star Trek Into Darkness hits us with a couple teaser trailers. Or more accurately, one trailer and then a second version of that same trailer with a tiny bit more footage. Because why not.

Here’s the first one:

Very destructive, lots of lava, and some Benedict Cumberbatch badassery. I definitely like the teaser trailer. I’ve never been a big Star Trek fan, but I loved the first reboot movie. So This sequel should be exciting. I think they’ve got a great cast and a great crew. No clue on what the story is about yet, or who Cumberbatch is playing. Word has it that he’s playing a guy called Gary Mitchell, a Starfleet crewmember from the original series who became a bad guy when he gained super powers.

And ‘Gary Mitchell’ has got to be the best and worst super-villain name ever. On the one hand, it’s just so bland. But on the other hand, it’s perfect for the character. If he’s just supposed to be a regular Starfleet guy who stumbles into super powers, then he should have a regular guy name. Though it’s going to be funny seeing a guy named ‘Benedict Cumberbatch’ referred to as ‘Gary’.

Here’s the second, international trailer. Pretty much same as the first, but with some new stuff, especially towards the end.

The film comes out on May 17.

Superman Gets Arrested

Looks like Superman might be spending some time in the hoosegow in next year’s Man of Steel.

Arrested for jaywalking

He does know he can break out of those at any moment, right?

I kid, I kid, of course he knows. He just chooses not to, because he’s Superman. Did that just blow your mind? I both like and dislike this movie poster, for different reasons. I like it because it promises something new and interesting happening to Superman. Arrested by some army-looking dudes? Why? What for? And what is prompting Superman to let it happen? Of course he could bust free of a simple pair of handcuffs and escape these guys. But Superman chooses not to do so. And his reasons might make for an interesting Superman scene.

I hate it because it’s another movie poster that looks completely lifeless due to Photoshop. Why are all the soldiers washed out? Why is the light so awkward? I realize it’s to make the poster look ‘kewl’, but all it does is cloud the image and the importance. Ah well. At least I’m still looking forward to Man of Steel.
