New Man of Steel Trailer Focuses on General Zod

General Zod is a horrible choice for villain in a Superman movie. What’s the point of Superman being the last son of Krypton is there are a bunch more? Plus he’s just visually unappealing. Lex Luthor is such a good villain because he’s just as smart as Superman is strong. General Zod is basically just evil Superman, and we’ve already got Bizarro for that.

The new trailer for Man of Steel still looks awesome. The size and scope of this film look amazing. Unlike The Wolverine, I am definitely still excited for Man of Steel. But I definitely don’t care for Zod yet at all. Or his evil plot. But maybe the movie will make him work. We’ll see.

At any rate, enjoy the latest trailer. What do you guys and gals think of Man of Steel so far? Excited? Disinterested? Do you think anybody will ever make a good Superman movie again?

New Wolverine Trailer Because Wolverines are in Right Now

A new trailer was released today for The Wolverine…and it looks pretty bad.

Maybe the movie will surprise us in the end, but so far it just looks pretty bad. I’m not sure I can put my finger on why, but maybe Wolverine is just over the hill. Maybe back when the X-Men movies were the best superhero movies coming out he might have stood a chance, but now he’s got to sell himself in the era of The Avengers, and he just comes up short.

Wolverine fighting a giant, robot Silver Samurai with heavy CGI does not appeal to me.

Review: Star Trek Into Darkness

I am not a Trekkie. I never watched the original series. I’ve only caught glimpses of Next Generation. And I didn’t even see the 1980s Star Trek films until only a few years ago. Of all the things I’m geeky about, Star Trek simply isn’t one of them. So keep that in mind when I tell you that Star Trek Into Darkness is a phenomenally exciting film, with some of the best characters and action since The Avengers. This is how you make an action movie. In space.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a wonderfully entertaining movie from beginning to end. It takes some of the coolest characters in sci fi history and puts them into harrowing, twisting scenes full of action, energy and, most importantly, heart. Because an action movie without heart is just Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. And nobody wants that.

Movie Rating: 5/5 – Great.

The best way to describe the new Star Trek franchise is that it’s definitely a 21st century action movie, but one told using beloved characters and iconic sci-fi history to better enrich the experience. The action is fast-paced, the editing is rapidly cut, and there’s an emphasis on camera movement and angles. There are explosions and there is gunfire, but those are no longer the biggest draw of an action movie. Instead, Star Trek Into Darkness is mostly about the characters, and the extreme action and big set pieces that they find themselves in. I love the movie for that.

Like I said, I’m not a Trekkie, but Star Trek is so infused in our pop culture that even I love seeing Kirk and Spock kicking ass and exchanging vows of friendship. I love seeing Scotty use his engineering know-how to save the day. I love seeing Klingons show up in the movie, just because I know what it means to have Klingons hanging around. And I love the reveal of the villain, and how his true identity makes him just that much more evil and fascinating than if he’d been just an original character.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a fantastic sequel, easily expanding upon and surpassing the first Star Trek from 2009. It takes the iconic characters we met in the first film and puts them into a bigger, badder adventure, while simultaneously growing them as people and as heroes. And possibly most important of all, Star Trek Into Darkness embraces its beloved fandom. This is not a movie that shies away from it’s geeky roots. Heck, there’s a tribble in this movie, for crying out loud!

Join me after the jump for my full review. There will be some SPOILERS here and there, but I’ll try to avoid spoiling some of the big stuff. If you want to remain completely unspoiled, then read the rest of my review only after you’ve seen the movie. Because right now, I really, really want to talk about Star Trek!

Hopefully There is More Than Just One Line of Idris Elba Dialogue in Pacific Rim

OK, so the ‘cancelling the Apocalypse’ line is pretty damn amazing, but every single Pacific Rim trailer has used it as the hook! By the time the movie comes out, it’s going to lose all meaning!

Not that it’s going to deter me from seeing this awesome movie. But knowing there are some other cool lines of dialogue in the film would make it more exciting. I’m just saying.

6 Characters Who Would Make Great Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

What do you do when your little superhero movie goes on to gross more than $2 billion? You create a TV spin-off, of course! Last year’s The Avengers has given way to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is going to premiere this fall on ABC. And because Marvel Studios are clearly able to recognize genius, The Avengers‘ director Joss Whedon was put in charge of developing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. For those who don’t know, Whedon is also the brains behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse and the much beloved Firefly, so the man knows a little something about producing great TV shows.

The new Scoobies

Unfortunately, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not going to feature any of the Avengers (probably) or Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll feature in cameo roles, but probably not until Sweeps Week. Instead, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will star Agent Phil Coulson from the movies, as well as a handful of new, original characters to make up the main cast. Most of the bad guys they fight will probably be original characters too.

That’s all well and good, but a comic book geek like me wants to see real Marvel characters from the comics! The great thing about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is that it takes place in the Marvel Movieverse, in the same world as The Avengers and all those Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk movies. And since it’s produced by Marvel Studios, they have nearly full access to the entire library of Marvel comics for possible characters, cameos and Easter Eggs. So here are six Marvel Comics characters who I think would be perfect for uncomplicated, licensing-approved appearances on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
