My 6 Favorite Animated Movies of All Time (This Week)

I went and saw Kubo and the Two Strings last weekend, excited by the captivating trailers. It was a fine film and quite enjoyable, but not the epic adventure I was hoping to see. A student of art craft would probably love it a lot more, considering all the work that LAIKA studios put into the stop-motion animation. But I’m not very good at marveling at that sort of thing. I just enjoyed a nice movie.

Spoiler Alert: He actually has three strings

And seeing a quality animated film on the big screen has me wondering about all the animated films I’ve loved in the past! I’m a huge fan of cartoons and have watched so many in my lifetime that I’ve probably forgotten a few. Right now, BoJack Horseman and Steven Universe are probably the two best TV shows on the air. And films like Finding Dory and The Secret Lives of Pets are two of the hottest films of an otherwise disappointing summer. Loving cartoons is just who am I.

So join me after the jump for my six favorite cartoon movies of all time — at least right now. Whims and memories could change these at any moment! And feel free to share your own favorites in the comments.

New Mary Jane Watson for Spider-Man Homecoming (Also, Shocker?!)

The casting hasn’t been officially announced yet, and I suppose it could change, but word has slipped that actor Zendaya will play Mary Jane in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. Sounds fine by me.

I don’t know anything about Zendaya — like why she seems to only have one name — but I am perfectly fine with this casting. In fact, I’m really only writing this story so that I can put down my mark and make it totally clear that this fat, grumbly comic book nerd is totally and 100% fine with Zendaya being cast as the white, red-haired Mary Jane Watson.

She doesn’t need to die her hair or put on a red wig. She doesn’t need to do anything. Heck, I don’t even need her to say the “jackpot” line. If this is who Marvel has cast as Mary Jane Watson then I have total and utter faith in that decision. They have never failed at casting before, and they’re not about to start now.

So yeah, Zendaya as Mary Jane sounds good to me.

Also, if I can tack this one here, a potential leak has revealed that actor Bokeem Woodbine will be playing the Shocker! That’s amazing! Woodbine was absolutely fantastic in Season 2 of the Fargo TV show, and I would love him as the Shocker!

That casting is a bit less confident, and I really hope Marvel actually officializes some of these announcements soon. No need to keep secrets.

Also, while we’re on the subject, Season 2 of Fargo is bloody brilliant; some of the best, most gripping television I’ve watched in quite some time. And Bokeem Woodbine is responsible for a lot of that, along with the guy who played Nite-Owl in the Watchmen movie.

Hellboy is an All-Time Classic

Hellboy is an all-time classic, but it’s not perfect — which is why we have Cinema Sins.

It’s an ultimate shame that we’ll never get Hellboy 3. Those movies were a real gem and still hold up. This was superhero movies done near perfect. Ron Perlman is a national treasure.

Arrival Looks the Appropriate Amount of Cool

Arrival could prove to be the new sci-fi movie of the year. The trailer looks especially thrilling.

Everybody likes Amy Adams and the rest of the cast, and this film looks especially cool. Exploring an alien invasion from the ground floor with a focus on linguistics sounds neat! Consider this one marked on my calendar for November.

Star Wars: Rogue One Trailer Delivers Both Stars and Wars

It’s a real shame that ‘Star’ and ‘War’ don’t rhyme. But rather than dwell on the unfairness of life, let’s enjoy a new trailer for Rogue One!

Looks pretty snazzy! Characters are coming together, the jokes are landing. Here’s hoping this mission gets pulled off without a hitch! If we’re gonna get more of these films until the heat death of the universe, I’d like to know that the’re gonna be good.
