Welp, So Much For My Superior Spider-Man Theory

Oh well. Can’t win them all. Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott appeared at an early morning breakfast on today’s unofficial start to New York City Comic-Con. He told the investors and other big shots about some of the details for Superior Spider-Man, the upcoming relaunch of the wall-crawler.

I’m going to save the spoilers until after the jump, just in case you don’t want to find out. But suffice to say, my theory that Doctor Octopus kills Mary Jane Watson has been debunked – that is, if you believed Bleeding Cool…which I tend to do.

Superior Spider-Man Confirmed and Detailed

With New York City Comic-Con this weekend, Marvel has gone ahead and revealed the new Superior Spider-Man in the pages of USA Today. We all know that Amazing Spider-Man is going to end with the upcoming issue #700, during which a big, epic something is going to happen.

And while that something hasn’t been revealed, we’re now getting our first look at the aftermath.

Superior? What, he thinks he’s better than me?

According to the article at USA Today, the big epic something is going to result in a darker, meaner Spider-Man.

“I’ve always been the omniscient hand that’s been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him,” he adds. “And now I’ve become this cruel god. There’s something exciting about that, about going, ‘Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what’s going to happen to you, Spider-Man!’ And it’s drastic and it’s big and it’s exciting and it’s never been done before.”

Slott also said the term “Friendly Neighborhood” is no longer going to apply to Spider-Man.

Artists will include Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

This darker Spider-Man is lending a lot more credence to my theory that Doctor Octopus is going to kill Mary Jane Watson!

Along with the new title, Slott said that Spider-Man will get some new powers, and his costume is going to be tweaked a little. The blue will be replaced by black, plus a few other extraneous changes that you can see in this picture.

Look! He’s got little toesy thingys!

So yeah, there is our first introduction to Superior Spider-Man! We may learn more at Comic-Con, and I’ll keep everyone posted as best  I can. Though I can’t say I’m excited to see these changes to Spider-Man, my curiosity may be piqued enough to at least buy a few issues.

6 Potential Marvel Crossovers After the Success of Avengers vs. X-Men

So what the heck is Marvel going to do now that Avengers vs. X-Men is over? It sold incredibly well, and definitely got a lot of mileage out of the hero vs. hero concept. Marvel pretty much struck gold! No doubt they want to capture that same magic again. Because if the entertainment industry has taught us anything, it’s that if one thing is popular, then repeating that thing over and over again will be just as popular! How else do you think we get most movie sequels?

But what can Marvel do next after Avengers vs. X-Men?

The only AvX battle that really mattered

I don’t know about you, but I liked Avengers vs. X-Men. It was action-packed and had a lot of neat, complicated character growth, even if the whole thing was a little bloated. But it was big in scope, and really took the characters on an epic, world-saving adventure. If Marvel is hoping that lightning strikes twice in the same place, I have a few suggestions for them.

My Guess Is That Doctor Octopus Will Kill Mary Jane Watson

This is pure speculation as to the big event that’s going to happen in Amazing Spider-Man #700. This is just a guess.

As I’ve written before, the milestone issue Amazing Spider-Man #700 is coming out in November, and writer Dan Slott has said that what he’s doing in this issue is the single biggest thing he’s ever done to a character. Something huge is going to happen, some kind of seismic change to Spider-Man’s world. But as Slott has also said, it’s not going to be a nice change. He’s worried about having to go into hiding when the issue comes out in order to escape the fans’ ire. As I wrote before, I hate this kind of hype and I hate big, dramatic changes that exist solely to piss off the fans and get them riled up.

The most obvious pun in the world

We also now know that Amazing Spider-Man #700 is going to be the last issue of the series. This was announced the other day when the November solicitations came out. Most likely this is going to lead to a new #1 issue as part of Marvel NOW! No one said Spider-Man would be exempt from Marvel NOW! And rumor has it, though it’s not yet confirmed, that the title is going to change to ‘Superior Spider-Man’. Nobody yet knows what that means or implies.

So what will Slott write that will be so huge as to really anger the fans and warrant an entire relaunch of Amazing Spider-Man?

I think Doctor Octopus is going to kill Mary Jane Watson.

Hopefully after she’s finished posing

Join me after the jump to find out why!

The Rocket Raccoon Mug of My Dreams

Curse you, Marvel Comics! The one year I decide not to go to the New York City Comic-Con and you open your own store!

Moichendising!

I want that mug. It’s so shocking adorable and awesome! Rocket Raccoon is going to star, and possibly be a breakout character, in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014. Marvel isn’t going to have any footage or anything to show at the NY Comic-Con this year, but clearly they can start merchandising!

But aargh! This is the year I decided not to go to the Comic-Con! I’ve gone the past two years in a row – and loved The Avengers footage they showed last year – but my brother and I decided not to bother this year. Someone out there in Marvel Comics land must have found out, and this is their punishment. The mug is only $12 at the show, but you know it’ll be $100 on eBay soon after.

You can check out the rest of Marvel’s exclusive booth merchandise here.

Any of my readers going to be in NYC for the Con this year?
