Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/31/14

Whether it’s to make up for the massive pile of reviews last week, or maybe just plain old laziness, my stack was a bit shorter this week. Less work for me, right gang? Who doesn’t love to slack off a little bit during the week. Maybe kick up the heels and watch that new Axe Cop cartoon? I know I do!

Though I was apparently hard at work elsewhere on the Internet. You can check out my reviews for Inhuman #2 and Deadpool #29 by clicking those links. Both comics were pretty bad. I just can’t get into Deadpool‘s humor, and Inhuman continues to be a spectacularly worthless comic. If all of Marvel’s hopes and dreams depend on turning Inhumans into the new mutants, they are pretty screwed – or maybe we’re pretty screwed, because there’s probably nothing stopping Marvel from just bulldozing over what we want in favor of what they want. Did you hear about the Fantastic Four?

Bad comics continue over at DC this week, with the worst issue of Batman Eternal yet. If there’s anyone else out there in comic book land who also can’t stand what they’re doing with the Gotham Police in Batman Eternal, please let me know. I hope I’m not the only one pulling their hair out.

Fortunately, this week also saw a new issue of Ms. Marvel, and that fills me with overwhelming joy. Kamala Khan is just too awesome. Ms. Marvel #4 easily wins Comic Book of the Week for its humor, its heart and, finally, its superheroics. Our little Kamala is growing up!

The look on her face brings me nothing but joy

Comic Reviews: Avengers #30, Batman #31, Batman Eternal #8, Ms. Marvel #4 and Nightwing #30.

Literal Trailer: X-Men: Days of Future Past

Your favorite and mine, Tobuscus is back with another excellent song/trailer parody!

I think this was one of his most ambitious songs yet. It’s dark, spooky, and perfectly funny alongside the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer. I wish he’d come out with these more frequently!

So We Have a Daredevil

Not that there was any hope that Ben Affleck would come back to play Daredevil again for the Netflix series. That’s probably for the best. Instead, Marvel has cast actor Charlie Cox in the role of blind attorney Matt Murdock, to star in the new Daredevil TV show that will come out next year. You may know Cox from Boardwalk Empire. I only know him from the movie Stardust, which I haven’t seen in many years, so I don’t remember anything about Charlie Cox.

But he’s the new TV Daredevil, so good for him!

I honestly don’t have much opinion on this. I’m very happy to see the Netflix series going forward. I can’t wait to see all of them. I’m super-excited to see what Marvel can do with a Daredevil TV show. I’m sure Cox is a great guy.

What does everybody else think of the news?

6 Thoughts on the First Season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been over for a few weeks now, and I would have done this list sooner, but Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past had to be addressed (and both were entertaining movies). I’ve come to the general conclusion that I don’t think I would be a very good TV reviewer. I don’t have the time or energy to really tackle each episode when it airs, and I’m pretty subjective when it comes to TV. So in order to tackle these popular shows, I like to wrap up my thoughts in a List of Six.

Expect my thoughts on the second season for Arrow next week. And today, let’s talk about the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.!

What a pain in the butt title to have to write out

First things first, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. didn’t live up to the hype. There’s no way around it. This was billed as a TV tie-in to the amazing Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced by Joss Whedon himself, and the hype was through the roof last Summer. But I think we can all agree that the show just didn’t measure up. But I stuck with it every week and saw every episode, and I’m going to be tuning in next season. So you better believe I have some thoughts.

Join me after the jump! Also, expect FULL SPOILERS for the entire first season.

Pete Holmes’ Ex-Men Kind of Got Funny Again

Remember when Pete Holmes was making funny videos about Professor X firing each of the X-Men? They started out pretty funny, but got pretty bad as they went on, and I stopped posting them. Well in honor of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Holmes put out one more, and it’s kinda funny!

I like that Magneto isn’t just relentlessly mocked. He kind of gives as good as he gets. Those Ex-Men videos ended up just being Holmes as an asshole making weird noises and insults. They were actually funny when he was legitimately critiquing the X-Men.
