My 6 Favorite DC and Marvel Comics (These Days)
For all of the writing I do about comic books and superheroes, I got to thinking the other day that I don’t really talk about my favorite comics all that much. Sure I try to review as many comics as I can each week, but that’s more of a professional thing than a personal one. And the entire point of starting this blog was to talk about what comics I like and interact with other comic book fans on the web. So this week’s blog list is all about the comic books I love to read.
Of course, that’s an entirely subjective idea. The comics I’m loving this week are completely different from the comics I loved a year ago. The comic book industry is in a constant state of flux. Comics are being cancelled or started every months, writers and artists are always switching, and there’s no telling when a comic will suddenly hit on a really great storyline. That’s one of the things I love about comics. You never know where the next great story, character or writer is going to come from.
So I’ve decided to make this list about the six favorite comics I’m reading these days, and I’ve decided to do a list for both Marvel and DC, the Big Two on superhero comics. I want to start reading more independent comics, but right now I’m only reading Saga, which I love. But this way, my list can also serve as my own personal prognosis on the success of Marvel NOW! or the New 52 from DC.
I’d love to talk about your favorite comics in the comments! Read the rest of this entry
My 6 Favorite Game of Thrones Characters…So Far
How cool is it that Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are two of the most popular shows on TV? Here are two genres – fantasy and zombie – that would have been relegated to just us geeks and nerds only a few years ago. But instead they’re cultural phenomenons! This is an exciting time to be a geek, that’s for damn sure. Of the two, Game of Thrones is definitely the better show. Thanks in no small part to the power of HBO, Game of Thrones is an epic, world-spanning story of power, intrigue, war, sex and dragons.
I am not a full Game of Thrones geek like some of my friends. I’m up to date on the TV show – and am currently watching the third season like the rest of the world – but I’ve only read the first two books. I’ve decided to go show-first, book-second. They make great companion pieces. The books provide further detail and depth to the show’s characters and world, while the show turns the characters into flesh and blood people, giving you a better visual understanding and experience that you can take back to the reading. I’m all for letting our imaginations run wild, but sometimes it really does enhance the experience to know what people and places look like when reading a book.
I wanted to do something Game of Thronesy for my List of Six this week, so I’ve decided to run down my top 6 favorite characters in the series, often forged from a combination of show and book. I put ‘so far’ in the title, because Game of Thrones is, first of all, a long way from being over, and second, notorious for killing popular characters. I’m more than a little nervous that some of my favorites won’t live to see a happy ending. But such is the risk you take when you fall in love with such an amazing series!
I’m going to do my best to avoid any major SPOILERS, but even still, you should be warned. Join me after the jump!
6 Superhero Movies That DC Comics Should Make
There’s never going to be a Justice League movie. It’s not going to star Christian Bale or Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman. And it’s not going to be directed by Christopher Nolan. Granted, this is probably just my opinion, but I feel confident in declaring that DC Comics are never going to get their act together. They are never going to create any movie to compete with Marvel’s multi-billion dollar Avengers juggernaut. It’s simply not going to happen. Even though DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros., which is already in the movie-making business, they are never going to succeed in creating anything more than the occasional Superman or Batman film.
But wouldn’t it be great if they could? If Marvel can make successful franchises out of Iron Man, Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, wouldn’t it be great if DC could get some other heroes up on the big screen?
Being the huge comic book nerd that I am, I looked over DC’s impressive roster of characters and picked out a few that I think could make for a good movie. Not all of them may be as successful as Iron Man or The Avengers, but if DC can make a popular TV show out of Green Arrow, or waste millions of dollars on a bad Green Lantern movie, I think they should consider some of these options. And please tell me some of your ideas in the comments. What DC movies would you like to see?
6 Joes That Should Appear in the Next G.I. Joe Movie
I saw G.I. Joe: Retaliation this past weekend, and I rather enjoyed it. The film had a lot of great action, a good story and some fantastic characters. And that’s half the fun of G.I. Joe, right? Awesome characters? Or maybe they’re the other half of the battle…Anyway, if you were a kid in the 80s like me, then G.I. Joe was one of the coolest cartoon/toy combinations available. There were dozens, if not hundreds, of unique, individual characters, each with their own awesome style. Not to mention amazing vehicles, playsets and more. Does anybody else remember the Rolling Thunder?
The Joes have a deep bench of characters, which might explain why the cast in G.I. Joe: Retaliation is almost completely different than in the first Joe movie (with the exception of Snake Eyes, of course, who we all know is the best G.I. Joe). Or maybe they just wanted to distance themselves from The Rise of Cobra. Either way, we can almost guarantee there’s going to be a threequel, which means more Joes! Here are the six classic G.I. Joes that I think would be great for the big screen.
The 6 Coolest Cat Superheroes
Ever since my blog started getting more popular, I’ve received a lot of e-mails from SEO people who want me to hire them to get more Google hits. Search Engine Optimization, I believe it’s called. Even if I had money, I wouldn’t do it, because I’m comfortable letting my blog grow naturally (Tell your friends! Share on Facebook!). However, I am not opposed to giving the people what they want. And what they want on the Internet is cats.

He is the cat. The night is his.
I love cats as much as the next person. If you want a surefire way to get me to laugh, just show me one of those Youtube videos of the ‘talking’ cats. Oh long Johnson! Hehe. But anyway! What better way to drive up my readership than by combining cats and superheroes? They go together like cats and cardboard boxes. So here are the six snazziest comic book characters who like to get in touch with their feline side.
