Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/12/19

What a great week for comics! I love a week where my favorites all come out at the same time, like Squirrel Girl, Wonder Twins and Go Go Power Rangers! To say nothing of more Gwenpool and the start of a nifty new Doctor Doom comic!

Comic Book of the Week goes, once again, to the big Powers of X/House of X series. The issue itself is really enjoyable, and the way it caps everything off and creates even more promise for the future is phenomenal. This has been a weird relaunch, but an exciting one!

Xavier Lose 01

Don’t look so sad about it

Meanwhile, Event Leviathan is still really good. I’m rather excited about the potential going forward…but I don’t know if this whole event will get wrapped up in the next issue, or if this is indeed the start of a whole new status quo for DC Comics. I suppose we’ll find out! And I’ll probably be fine with either.

Comic Reviews: Doctor Doom #1, Go Go Power Rangers #24, Gwenpool Strikes Back #3, Powers of X #6, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #49 and Wonder Twins #8.

6 Thoughts on Joker

I am 100% in favor of DC Comics and Warner Bros. breaking away from the Marvel Moviemaking Mold and going in their own direction. I’m all in favor of them doing stand alone, psychological movies or stand alone comedies or stand alone superhero movies. As long as they keep putting out good, solid movies, I’ll probably be happy. But considering that it’s DC and Warner Bros., there’s always the chance they’ll put out a movie I don’t like — which brings us to Joker.

Joker Review List 01

Movie Rating: 5/10 – Alright.

My movie reviews are 100% subjective. I’m not a film critic. I didn’t study film. I couldn’t tell you anything about cinematography and how it effects whatever. I watch movies to be entertained and enjoy a good story and performances. That’s how I judge movies, and it’s entirely on me. And with that in mind, Joker is not my kind of movie. It’s not what I’m looking for, it’s not something I enjoyed. I just didn’t like Joker, but I can recognize that it was a well-made film that successfully gets its message across.

Join me after the jump for my full thoughts on why I didn’t like it, but still understand it!

Just a Bunch MORE Trailers!

New York Comic-Con is still in full swing and we’ve got a bunch of more trailers to share, mostly for upcoming TV shows! I love trailers and I love sharing trailers!

First up, let’s check out the trailer for the upcoming Picard TV show, starring Captain Picard from Star Trek! I’ve never been a major Star Trek fan, but I’m enjoying Star Trek: Discovery, and will probably try out Picard.

I’m definitely a fan of this trend of bringing back original actors for revival shows. So keep it up, Hollywood!

And here’s our first proper look at the third season of Runaways! I’m really enjoying this show, and the third season looks to be good. I’m wondering if I should fully binge the Cloak and Dagger show to prepare myself for the crossover.

What shows are you henchies looking forward to? And I’ve got a bunch more trailers to share soon!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/5/19

I didn’t care for Joker. It’s not my cup of tea. It’s a dark, brooding, severely misanthropic movie that, while well-made and well-acted, is just too bleak for my tastes. If you enjoyed it, more power to you.

Fortunately, we had some truly stellar comics this week! There were some really great turns in Lois Lane, Runaways and The Green Lantern, while Fantastic Four severely disappointed. I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to House of X #6 for a truly joyous party issue! That sort of fun counts for a lot with me.

XMen Party 01

Jubilee is in her element

Meanwhile, I’ve dropped Future Foundation now that Marvel has announced a nigh immediate cancellation. Can’t say I’m particularly sad, as I was only lukewarm about the series so far. I just hope Marvel sticks Jeremy Whitley on a character or characters with some actual staying power.

Comic Reviews: Batman #80, Fantastic Four #15, The Green Lantern #12, House of X #6, Lois Lane #4 and Runaways #25.

Harley Quinn is Getting a Birds of Prey Inspired Comic!

I was a huge fan of the Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti run on the Harley Quinn comic a few years ago. I haven’t been following Harley’s story since then, so I don’t know what she’s been up to. But now we know that Conner and Palmiotti are coming back to the character for a new Black Label mini-series next year, teaming up Harley with her Birds of Prey movie co-stars!

Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey comes out in February!

Harley Returns to Comics 01

A very comics take on the upcoming movie cast

The most exciting news of all is that Conner will be doing interior art! That’s all I ever wanted for her original run on Harley Quinn. Conner is one of my all-time favorite comic book artists, and having her do interiors will be a dream come true.

I am legit excited about this comic and I hope you are too!
