6 Reasons Why I Love Comic Books
We all have our vices, mine is the funny books. I’m a total comic book geek – which I hope didn’t come as a shock to any of you. Some people like sports, some like NASCAR, some like music, but not me. I love reading superhero comics. It’s my passion. And not only do I love reading them, but my dream job is to someday write superhero comics. I wear comic book T-shirts, I collect comic book action figures, I write a blog about comics and every week I take a trip to my local comic book shop to pick up a big stack of new books to read.
You could say I’m cuckoo for comic books!
But why do I love comic books? Of all the millions of things I could love, especially all the ones that are more socially acceptable, why do I continue to be a huge geek who reads comic books? Why spend the money? What do I get out of them? Hopefully today I can answer those burning questions! Here are 6 reasons why I love reading comic books!
Holy Avocado Soldiers! There Might Be an Axe Cop Cartoon!
This may be the greatest news in ax-wielding law enforcement animation since the ring fell off Chief Wiggum’s pudding cap. Insane-in-all-the-best-ways web comic Axe Cop has been optioned for an animated cartoon on FOX’s new Animation Domination HD Saturday night block. According to Deadline Hollywood, FOX has ordered six 15-minute episodes of the brilliant web series about an ax-wielding cop and his partner, who is sometimes either a flute cop, a dinosaur cop, a dinosaur soldier or an avocado soldier. It varies. The series is set to debut early next year. But you can spend the time waiting by reading the Axe Cop comic!
If you’ve never heard of Axe Cop, then shame on you. Click that link right now and go read this marvelously amazing series. It will rot your brain with its awesomeness and then rebuild your brain with even more awesomeness. I lack the literary skill to express in mere words the incredible brilliance of Axe Cop.
But here is a smidgen of its greatness as Axe Cop and Flute Cop fight dinosaurs in just the first strip!
The genius of Axe Cop comes from the mind of 5-year-old Malachai Nicolle, or at least he was 5 when the comic started in 2010. Malachai’s 30-year-old brother Ethan was an artist, and he started drawing all the insane ideas that his brother could come up with. The comic is wildly out of control when it comes to ides. From the ever transmorphing sidekick to characters like the Unicorn Baby, the vampire/ninja/werewolf/wizard/shark/crab brother Moon Warriors to Sock-a-Rang!
Seriously, if you’ve ever trusted me about anything, then take my word that this web comic has to be seen to be believed. You will not be disappointed. And if you are, then you and I have wildly conflicting senses of humor. Because I am in love with Axe Cop.
They also have a pet T-Rex with machine gun arms.
Is Mimic Going to Die Next Week?
I sure hope one of my favorite comic book characters isn’t going to die next week, but it’s not looking good. If you recall my epic review from a few weeks ago, the Mimic is currently guest starring in a two issue story in X-Men: Legacy. It’s one of those auxiliary X-Men titles; not one of the main franchise leading titles. It’s almost specifically set up to star the B and C-list X-characters, because they all have fans and slapping ‘X’ onto a comic really helps it sell.
And since I’m a huge fan of the Mimic, I was overjoyed at his appearance! But I’m also afraid that it’s going to end badly!
So why do I think he’s going to die? Join me after the jump for the disturbing evidence!
Forgotten Characters: Rhapsody
Whatever happened to Rhapsody?
No, seriously, how is it that this total babe of a mutant has only ever appeared in one comic book story nearly 20 years ago? She was a villain/love interest for my favorite comic book character, Multiple Man, in one of the earliest comic books I ever owned: X-Factor #79. The comic was written by Peter David, who is once again currently writing a new X-Factor series, starring Multiple Man.
So I want to know why Peter David hasn’t brought her back for a cameo or a reappearance or anything? Marvel Comics went to the trouble of making sure that Rhapsody did not lose her mutant powers on M-Day, but why bother if they weren’t going to use her again someday? She’s hot, she’s blue and she’s crazy. She’s everything that comic book fans are looking for!

Review: X-Factor #234
In which two members do some soul searching while everyone else enjoys a much deserved group hug. And that’s mostly it. This issue of X-Factor had a few certain story beats it wanted to hit, so it did. Everything else is just kind of fun, generally moving a few different plots along while taking care of the ‘Madrox is back from the dead!’ angle. It’s not the big, emotional scene of awesome I was hoping for, but it’s definitely some good team bonding. We also have Madrox and Havok start butting heads, so that was fun. Though I hope we see some more of this team drama in the issues that come.
This issue also featured one of the most adorable superhero group hugs ever.
Comic rating: 4/5: Good.
This issue is also book-ended by the Isolationist’s story, as the mysterious woman is finally revealed in full. But their little segments add absolutely nothing to the overall threat they’re trying to convey, and I find myself rolling my eyes at them even more than last week. They are not threatening, they are not interesting and I have little to no desire in seeing them eventually face off against X-Factor. This book’s greatest strength is when its characters can act like real people, and deal with grounded, street-level adventures. The idea of them facing off against two far-out super-villains seeking world domination just doesn’t interest me in the least.
Fortunately, this issue mostly focuses on the good characters and what their lives are like together. So that’s a plus.
