Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/26/15

Short and sweet week for comics for me! Marvel is still mired in Secret Wars delays, so I didn’t grab anything from them this week. And none of my regular indie titles came out. Granted, this would make for a great week to pick up a new indie title…but I have more Witcher 3 to play! I can’t remember the last time I was this absorbed in a new video game. It feels great — while being simultaneously bad for business!

Fortunately, DC Comics put out three of my favorite comics: Batgirl, Grayson and We Are Robin. All three were fun to read, but Grayson edges out as the Comic Book of the Week for a milestone-ish issue.

Acting!

I love me some Bat-Family times.

In other comic news, I read the latest volume of Empowered this week, and it’s as much fun as the rest of the series. Anybody else read Empowered? I keep wanting to find some way to spotlight that indie series. It’s a real gem.

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #44, Grayson #12 and We Are Robin #4.

Some Minor Prowler News to Salvage Today

I was supposed to have something really exciting to share with everybody today! I waited all day for it to show up, but nope, it didn’t. I guess I’ll have to share it tomorrow. Still, man, how disappointing? Have you ever checked and rechecked a website all day waiting for something awesome to get posted, only for the mysterious forces of the Internet to fail you? Alas.

Anyway, rather than wallow in disappointment, I thought I’d share a tidbit of news that came over the Internet this week: the Prowler is going to be a supporting character in the new Amazing Spider-Man comic!

Complete with costume redesign!

I love the Prowler! He’s one of my all-time favorite comic book characters, especially in the Spider-Man books. I love that Peter has a legit superhero friend out there who isn’t a love interest and isn’t just a different A-list hero. He’s just a good guy who pals around with Spidey sometimes. So finding out that he’s going to be a player in the new, relaunched Amazing Spider-Man series was some welcome, geeky news.

Hopefully stay tuned tomorrow for my really exciting news!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/19/15

I tell ya, I honestly forgot how good it felt to have a real, fully working new video game to dive into. I never got around to buying a PS 4 or an X-Bone, and my PC has been out of date for a long time. I’ve spent the past year playing either old X-Box 360 games or PC games where I had to shrink the screen and lower the graphics to the bottom wrung to get even some movement out of them. But wowzers does it feel good to have a brand new, fully upgraded computer gaming machine!

My current list is Witcher 3, Dead Rising 3 and Divinity: Original Sin. Feels good!

As for comics, we’ve got some treats this week! New issues of Harley Quinn and Lumberjanes don’t fail to entertain, though I’m still not won over by the new Secret Six. Fortunately, the main Star Wars series is still pretty amazing, and wins Comic Book of the Week for its exciting, mythology-based story — and probably the coolest Chewbacca moment in years.

Stand aside, Mon Mothma, he’s here!

Someday, I expect to get a Chewbacca vs. Black Krrsantan battle out of these Marvel comics. If that doesn’t happen, then Disney buying Marvel was completely for naught! Naught, I say!

Comic Ratings: Harley Quinn #20, Lumberjanes #18, Secret Six #6 and Star Wars #9.

The 6 Most Badass Cops in Comics

In thinking up this week’s List of Six, I decided to honor the first-responders of 9/11 from last week, so I started searching far and wide for famous police officers and firefighters in comics. Police were not a problem; there are a million of them! But I couldn’t find any superhero firefighters! I found a few, sure, but not nearly enough to do them justice.

But, like I said, there were plenty of cops!

Maybe something about vigilantes being against the law…

Then I got the idea: why not create my own firefighter superhero! I fancy myself a future comic book writer. I should add this idea to the ever growing pile of award-winning comics I’ll someday write. But until then, join me in celebrating some of the coolest police officers and police superheroes in comics!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/12/15

Oh boy! What a week! I had a great birthday, thanks for asking. Plus, in the good news department, my new computer arrived five days early! So I’ve spent the past few days getting that all set up, transferring files, and trying out some awesome games on my new super awesome graphics card. Talk about a major improvement!

But I didn’t forget about comics this week, not a chance! And what a week for comics! We get some solid new issues of Action Comics and Gotham Academy, both of which I definitely enjoy. This week also marks the return of Bitch Planet, and the start of Star Wars: Shattered Empire, the first comic in Marvel’s Star Wars series that takes place ahead of The Force Awakens! Good stuff!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Ms. Marvel! With the end of the world on the horizon, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona deliver a knockout issue of my favorite comic, hitting all the right emotional, silly and down-to-Earth beats that have made Ms. Marvel such a stellar comic!

And there’s still one more Ms. Marvel to go before the relaunch! I can’t wait to see how they wrap up the first volume of this dynamite series!

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #44, Bitch Planet #5, Gotham Academy #10, Ms. Marvel #18, Starfire #4 and Star Wars: Shattered Empire #1.
