Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/4/17

I’m surprised they don’t have an issue of Mighty Thor on the stands this week. The big #700 issue dropped two weeks ago, but the big Thor: Ragnarok movie event is this weekend! And it’s a great movie! A ton of fun! I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Wednesday.

For now, how about a couple of comics? It was a very light week for me this week, with new issues of Iceman and Iron Fist, alongside the newly returned Captain America. Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman for another stellar issue in Tom King’s ongoing Catwoman romance storyline.

Bat Cat 01

Trouble in paradise already

I gave Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man one more chance this week, with the highly publicized issue of Spidey sitting down for an interview with longtime nemesis J. Jonah Jameson — but it didn’t work for me. The concept is interesting, but it doesn’t belong in this series at this moment.

Brian Michael Bendis will always have the definitive confrontation between the two characters in Ultimate Spider-Man. But too much weird stuff has gone on between the two characters in the 616 universe, a lot of which is referenced in the new issue, to make the confrontation as meaningful as it should be.

Comic Reviews: Batman #34, Captain American #695, Iceman #7 and Iron First #74.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/28/17

Happy Halloween! The most spooktacular holiday of the year is right around the corner, and if you’re reading this on Saturday, I’m right in the middle of some solid celebrations! I have two costumes this year: Walmart is selling giant animal mascot heads for only $20, so I snagged me a rabbit head! And then I’m going to a zombie party tonight! Should be fun!

But I also had comics to read! And they were pretty much spectacular across the board this week, I was amazed! I wanted to give everything a super high score! From Amazing Spider-Man to Detective Comics to Power Rangers! But I would be remiss if the final issue of the Slott/Allred Silver Surfer didn’t blow me away. Comic Book of the Week for sure!

Surfer Eve 01

I hope the Silver Surfer is too!

Perhaps even Comic Book of the Year! I was worried they wouldn’t stick the landing, but oh man, Slott and Co. were saving something really, really special for this final issue. Something that pretty much tied the entire damn story together. My hat is off to the creative team of Silver Surfer. This was a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #790, Batgirl #16, Detective Comics #967, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 and Silver Surfer #14.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/21/17

Ever have one of those weeks where work gets really, really busy and you just can’t read as many comics as you’d like? That’s me this week…and next week. And then it’s Halloween! At least we had some really good comics this week, from another stellar issue of Tom King’s Batman to a nifty Harley Quinn, drawing us ever close to the end.

Comic Book of the Week goes to the oversized Mighty Thor #700, which uses its anniversary status to tell some really neato tales!

Throg Hand 01

Everything should be a job for the Frog of Thunder

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I’m throwing in the towel with The Wild Storm. I really wanted to stick with the comic for the entire duration and really provide an outsider’s eye to the experience, but with the latest issue this week, every reserve of energy I had left to care has been exhausted. This isn’t the comic for me. I’m sorry if I’m disappointing anyone and I hope you’re all still enjoying The Wild Storm.

Meanwhile, I’m super enjoying Saban’s Go, Go Power Rangers. I didn’t get around to writing up a review for the new issue, but the series is spectacular!

Comic Reviews: Batman #33, Harley Quinn #30, Mighty Thor #700 and Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #5.

Have you heard the horrible news?! After many long years, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti are leaving Harley Quinn! Say it ain’t so, you guys! I’m going to miss you! Don’t worry, I’ll stick with you all the way to the end!

Unfortunately, we don’t have a new issue of Harley Quinn this week! Instead we’ve got some truly awesome issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Detective Comics, Mister Miracle, Runaways and more! And I’m very pleased to award Comic Book of the Week to the latest issue of Ms. Marvel, which settles back into basics and delvers a super fun issue!

Whatevs

DC released a new issue of their Metal Event this week and it’s OK, but I’m not particularly liking it. There’s an artifice to the whole thing that’s turning me off. Like, Scott Snyder and DC are trying too hard to fit this into old bits of DC continuity, and that falls flat when the story is so basic. It’s just a bunch of evil alternate reality Batmans, and we’re told that the world has been completely conquered. I think the scope is just too big for what they’re giving this story and too much is being hammered into place just to be clever. No thank you.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #789, Detective Comics #966, Mister Miracle #3, Ms. Marvel #23, Runaways #2 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #25.

New Justice League Trailer for All Your Justice League Needs

This is actually an OK Justice League trailer. I like it better than the previous one, possibly because it’s got a touch more Joss Whedon in it this time? I don’t know. I’m still mostly expecting this film to be as dark and crummy as Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. But I suppose anything is possible.

Maybe it’ll be fun. Maybe Justice League will exceed expectations and be a good movie. Or maybe it’ll be another dark, action-heavy garbage pile. There’s only one way to find out and it arrives next month!
