Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/23/13
Another third week is upon us and once again I find myself reviewing more than a dozen comics! I wish I knew how it worked out that all my favorite comics seem to come out on the same week. It’s like some kind of conspiracy against me and my poor wallet. At least they’re all mostly good comics. Seriously, not a stinker in the bunch…but maybe that’s just because I tend to stop buying comics that I don’t like. I’ve whittled away all the bad comics and am left with a great lineup of quality stories. I can live with that.
Comic Book of the Week was hard to choose because none of these issues rose to real greatness. They’re all just generally good and entertaining. It came down to a battle between the viciousness of Doc Ock in Superior Spider-Man vs. the adorable cheerfulness of Captain Marvel, and I’m happy to say Carol pulled through another win! Captain Marvel is just a fantastic series.

What if Ultron is Not the Villain in Age of Ultron?
I’m usually incredibly wrong with these types of predictions, like with Amazing Spider-Man #700, but hear me out. I think we’re going to find out that it wasn’t Ultron who took over the world and killed all the superheroes, it was instead Hank Pym! Or maybe some kind of hybrid of Pym and Ultron!

I have very little evidence to base this on. Only two issues of Age of Ultron have come out so far, but the clues are starting to be dropped. There are also solicitations for issues all the way up until the finale in June that we can pore over.
I don’t think anyone at Marvel has actually teased that there’s a big surprise coming. This is deliberate, I think. If someone in PR said ‘Who is really behind the Age of Ultron?’ then everybody would already know the answer is Hank Pym. So if they don’t tell us that there’s a big surprise twist coming, then we won’t know to expect it, and it’ll be even stronger when it does hit.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/9/13
This week kicks off Marvel’s new Big Event comic the Age of Ultron…but it’s kind of a slow build so far. We’ll have to see if it picks up in the second issue, which comes out next week. Talk about accelerated shipping. Beyond the big stuff, we’ve got a good collection of quality comics. I think I liked every single issue I read this week, everything from the important titles like Avengers and All-New X-Men down to the smaller stuff like Green Arrow and Winter Soldier. Though now that I think about it, I need to buy more independent titles. Seriously, can anyone recommend any good comics that aren’t Marvel or DC?
But until then, I’m going to stick with the big guns, and it actually surprises me to say that Comic Book of the Week goes to Avengers #7! Where did that come from? I have really had it in for this series since issue #1, but Jonathan Hickman really knocked it out of the park this week. He actually made me interested in the New Universe.

Captain America is a Jerk; Or Why Uncanny Avengers is the Most Marginalized Team in Comics
Marvel currently has an overabundance of Avengers. And why shouldn’t they? In a matter of weeks last Summer, The Avengers movie became the third highest grossing film of all time! It’s only common sense that they would want to pump up the number of Avengers comics they’re putting out. But in doing so they have created an overlap problem. There are too many Avengers.
And the series Uncanny Avengers – which was billed as the flagship series of the new Marvel NOW! campaign – has instead become the red-headed step-child of the Avengers line. And it’s all Captain America’s fault.

Let me first say that this is not a knock against writer Rick Remender or artist John Cassady. They’re both great creators and they’re putting out a fine, solid comic book with Uncanny Avengers. The problem is that they’ve been completely screwed over by the larger Marvel machine, and Captain America in particular. The guy is a total asshole.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/23/13
It’s weeks like this that make me regret ever starting this Hench-Sized review column! Oy vey! Somehow, the Marvel and DC scheduling system is perfectly tailored to my reading habits so that the books I actually buy and read all come out on the same darn week! Last week I only had four comics in the Hench-Sized reviews. This week there’s more than a dozen! And it doesn’t help that I’m broke…
But enough whining, let’s get to some comics! This has proven to be an absolutely stellar week of books! I enjoyed all of the comics I bought this week, with more than a few of them rising to perfect scores. And you want to talk gender equality? How about the fact that the two best comics this week both star female leads. It’s an absolute shame that more people aren’t buying Captain Marvel. That book is absolutely amazing! But it’s surpassed just a little by Batwoman, which wins Comic Book of the Week for its fantastic climactic issue and surprise romantic ending!
Though Captain Marvel’s sheer adorableness was hard to beat.
