6 Things I Want to See in a Spider-Man Video Game Threequel

I beat and platinumed the new Spider-Man 2 video game this past week and had a total blast. I’ve been playing Spider-Man games since I was a wee lad, and this new series has seen some of the best ever. Swinging around the city, fighting bad guys, getting some great Spider-Man stories, has all been a true video game achievement. And I’m looking forward to many more to come!

Game Rating: 9/10 – Great!

There are going to be more games. The three so far have been super successful and super popular, and Spider-Man is on a role in the larger pop culture universe. Marvel and Sony need to keep striking while the iron is hot, so I expected more games. I don’t know if we’ll get another interlude like the Miles Morales game, or if we’ll go straight to Spider-Man 3, or if there will be any DLC for Spider-Man 2. But I know there will be a threequel, and I have demands, hopes and dreams for what I want to see in that game!

Join me after the jump for all the characters, concepts and stuff I want to see in the Spider-Man video game threequel. Expect FULL SPOILERS for the full game. And feel free to share your own game wants in the comments below.

6. A third, female protagonist

That hair is gonna be tough to animate

This possibility was hinted at in one of the post-credits scenes, with the introduction of a character named Cindy. This would obviously point towards Cindy Moon, otherwise known as Silk. She’s as good as anyone if a third game wants to introduce a third protagonist, and it would be fine by me. I’m not a big Silk fan, but I don’t need to be to enjoy playing her in a third game. Plus, obviously, it would fit the convention they’ve created of having the number of protagonists match the number in the title. Would that be too many characters in one game? Nah! This series could handle it.

Or if they don’t want that many protagonists, they could pull a Donkey Kong Country and have Miles take over with his new partner, Cindy. Just like Diddy Kong and Dixie!

5. City sightseeing

More of this

One of the few things I was disappointed with in Spider-Man 2 was a lack of real interaction with the city itself. They’ve gone to all this trouble of creating an amazing 3D recreation of Manhattan, and they added parts of Brooklyn and Queens to this game, but we spend all our time swinging high above the city. There was so much going on at street level, but we never really see it. And there are so many interesting buildings we swing over or swing past, but we don’t do much else but look at them. I think the first game had a side project where you visit certain locations, but that was nixed for this game. I would like something to come back where you need to visit and learn about these places. Get us down at street level more. Get us to interact with the city more. There’s a whole section of Queens that has woods and neighborhoods, but we don’t spend too much time there. Spider-Man running through the woods is neat!

4. Deeper Goblin lore

Heroic Phil Urich for life

It seems pretty obvious at this point that Norman Osborn will become the Green Goblin in the third game, and he’ll be the major villain. The city will probably be overrun with a Goblin Army, so that we have people to fight. It’s something from the comics, so it’s definitely something the game can just pluck out and use. If all of that is the case, I hope we get plenty of Goblin-related cameos. Maybe we get a Hobgoblin side quest. Harry Osborn probably won’t play a big role in the game, but what about the likes of Phil Urich or Ned Leeds or Roderick Kingsley? There are plenty of Goblin characters from the comics who could be used to some degree if the game needs more supporting characters, and I hope to see them.

3. More minor villains

Big Wheel is a criminal mastermind

Ultimately, Spider-Man 2 does have a lot of villains (though they kill off way too many for my tastes). We’ve got Kraven and then Venom as the major villains, with appearances from Sandman, Mysterio, Mr. Negative, Tombstone and then Chameleon and Carnage teases. But I still felt like the villain quotient was lacking. I feel like we could have had more villains in the world or as side missions. For one thing, they don’t all need to be teases at the end of side quests. Why not have a side quest with the villain out in the open? Make it a singular side quest to stop a Beetle bank robbery randomly. Maybe Stegron is tearing up every single park in the city, and we get multiple Stegron boss fights as he keeps escaping. Rather than fighting mini-mobs of random criminals in sporadic crime, why not have us fight Boomerang? He doens’t need to be a full boss fight, just a tougher goon fight. And we’ve already got mini-crimes where we stop a speeding vehicle. Would it really be so difficult to have us stop a speeding Big Wheel?

2. More superhero friends

Ultimate Spider-Man did it a million years ago

Spider-Man has plenty of superhero friends, and I wish they had more of a role in these games. Wraith was a great example in Spider-Man 2. She’d sometimes show up to help out in a fight, then got her own side quest storyline. That was great! So let’s do more of that. Human Torch would be great, considering they started putting together the Baxter Building in Spider-Man 2. But Black Cat could come back. Hobie Brown could take up the Prowler identity. And then some fun hero team-ups in the end. Heck, maybe even a friendship system, where you can be a jerk to your friends or you can be a pal, and that will determine if they return to help you out. Just spitballing. I just wanna see more characters in these games, I suppose.

1. Spider-Verse level

Let us visit this place!

You know how in video games there’s always that one level where you’re on drugs or you’re in a dream or something along those lines, and things get really weird for a level or a story mission? Well in Spider-Man 3, they should do that…but have our character visit the Spider-Verse. And I don’t mean a game world version of the Spider-Verse (though I would settle for that), I mean the Spider-Verse from the movies. This game’s Spider-Man had a quick cameo in Across the Spider-Verse, and it was fun. So…let’s see the other side of that. Let’s play a level as Spider-Man where he travels to the Spider HQ and pops in on movie Miles getting a tour of the place. Or if not that direct of a crossover, how about just have a Spider-Verse level? There clearly exists another Miles Morales Spider-Man in this game series, so it would be a big deal for movie Miles to know that. So let us play something to do with the Spider-Verse!
