6 Costumes I Want in the New Spider-Man Games

I am currently swinging my way through the new Spider-Man 2 video game on Playstation 5, having a grand old time fighting bad guys, thwipping webs and fighting Venoms. When I beat the game, I’ll do a round-up List of Six (maybe next week?), but today I wanted to touch upon a specific aspect of the game series: the costumes! I love alternate costumes, even if I don’t use them very often, and even after three games in this series, there are more I want to see.

This costume already looks damn good

I’m a sucker for maintaining story accurate costumes in these games. No matter how well these alternate costumes are incorporated into the animation and gameplay, I’m still usually wearing Peter or Miles’s game canon costume for the story missions. I can’t help myself. But I’ve loved having the alternate costume option since all the way back to the Spider-Man Playstation 1 games. Spidey has so many costumes, it’s a hoot to have them available. And I definitely indulge when it comes to side quests or mini-games, or just swinging around the city in new duds.

So when we get some DLC or even Spider-Man 3 or Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2, these are the costumes I still want to see in this game series.

6. So many Across the Spider-Verse options

One of them appears to be a Canadian hockey player

There are a couple of Into/Across the Spider-Verse costumes in all three games, and they usually come with an altered animation style, for that added kick! But Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to so many new characters with their own costumes that the games really need to step it up! There are all manner of comic character costumes, obviously, but that Spider-Sona movement really caught on, as well. There are obvious choices, like Peter B. Parker in the pink robe or Pavitr Prabhakar, but what about Sun-Spider? Spider-Rex? Metro Boomin? Spider-Therapist? That cowboy Spider-Man? Or what about LEGO Spider-Man? He already exists across many video games. Why not bring his code over?

5. Classic Kaine

The 90s were a hell of a drug

I’m a big fan of the Clone Saga from the 1990s. So sue me. It’s when I started really getting into reading Spider-Man comics regularly, and it holds a special place in my heart. And I especially love the character of Kaine. He’s come a long way and is really awesome. We’ve already had Kaine’s Scarlet Spider costume in the game, so why not his classic look from the 90s? It’s a distinct look, with flowing brown hair and a disheveled cape. Should look pretty awesome.

4. Spider-Boy

All I ever want from comics

I know Marvel has introduced a new Spider-Boy character with his own comic series, but I’m talking classic Amalgam Spider-Boy. There are already alternate costume colors that make the new Spider-Boy costume, so I’m not worried about him (he might not even still be around in time for Spider-Man 3). Instead, I want Amalgam Spider-Boy. I want the leather jacket. I want the hair. I want the slight references to Superboy. Let us have fun things!

3. Prowler

Prowler spin-off game, maybe?

I’m a big Prowler fan, though almost exclusively for the original comic book Prowler, Hobie Brown. I’ve simply had to make my peace with the Ultimate change of Prowler being Aaron Davis, uncle to Miles Morales. It’s fine. And we’ve even bot a Prowler-inspired costume for Miles. But, like…why not just give him the Prowler costume? It’s in the game, the coding is there, so why not just make it look like we’re playing as the Prowler? That would be super fun!

2. The Slingers

I think they were already skins in Spider-Man: Edge of Time

I loved the Slingers. Back in the ’90s, there was a Spider-Man story called Identity Crisis, during which Spider-Man was accused of murder and there was a bounty on his head. In order to stay a superhero and solve the crime, Spider-Man took on four different superhero identities (one for each of the Spider-Man ongoing comics at the time). They were Ricochet, Hornet, Dusk and Prodigy. Peter Parker wore each costume, so they are legit. The identities were then spun off into The Slingers, when four college students took up the identities for their own series. Those kids are still around, for the most part. But still, they are costumes that Peter Parker wore, and would be super fun as alternate skins! Hornet could even incorporate fancy new wings for the Web Wings.

1. Ben Reilly Spider-Man

Perfection

Why is this costume not in any of the games yet? This thing is gorgeous! This is the Spider-Man costume that Ben Reilly wore when he became Spider-Man for a short period. Then it was picked up and worn for many years by Spider-Girl when she had her own comic. This thing is possibly my all-time favorite Spider-Man costume. The classic one is great, but this redesign takes the classic look and gives it a modern overhaul and really, really works. I would love to swing around the city in this beauty. Considering how awesome the Scarlet Spider suit looks in these games, this Ben Reilly/Spider-Girl suit would be a work of art. We’ve even got a modern Ben Reilly outfit. But not this classic, original Ben Reilly Spider-Man suit, and that’s a damn shame.
