6 Things I Want to See in a Knuckles TV Show
We’re going to get a live action TV show starring Knuckles the Echidna. I’m still trying to wrap my head around this one. I don’t know whether to just sit back and be gleeful about this development or question my sanity that we live in a world where this will happen. Either way, I have demands.
I am a big fan of Knuckles. I can still vividly remember my childhood fandom, where my weird love of Australian marsupials crossed with my love of video games. I wasn’t allowed to have games as a kid, and that only nurtured my desperate desire to play Sonic the Hedgehog games. When I learned in a pre-internet world that there’d be a new Sonic critter based on an echidna, childhood Sean’s imagination went wild. And when Knuckles finally did show up, he was everything I could have wanted and more.
I’m already beside myself at all these Sonic 2 movie trailers showing Idris Elba’s Knuckles in all his glory. It’s going to be so weird to tune into a weekly TV show starring the character. Join me after the jump for my hopes and dreams for this Knuckles show.
6. Prestige-style format
The biggest question right now is what type of show this is going to be? Obviously, Sonic the Hedgehog has had numerous cartoon shows over the years, and Knuckles has been in a lot of them. But this feels different. This is going to spin out of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which has nothing to do with those earlier cartoons or the Sonic games. This feels like the Peacemaker TV show, which spun out of The Suicide Squad. This feels like the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+.
This feels like a real, prestige-format, live action TV Show…starring Knuckles the Echidna. And that’s exactly what I want! I don’t want some kiddie show or some joke program. I want the Knuckles equivalent of Peacemaker or Reacher. I want serialization, I want high drama, I want real character development. I want Idris Elba to bring his A+ game in a realistic, grounded show about Knuckles the Echidna getting into who knows what!
5. The Chaotix, obviously
What possible solo storyline can they do with Knuckles other than the Chaotix? Infamously, all of the echidna backstory developed in the Sonic comics is off-limits because of rights issues. So if they can’t delve into that, why not have Knuckles team up with his video game team of ne’er-do-wells? I think they’re a detective agency? Either way, they’d be a great supporting cast. The likes of Mighty the Armadillo, Charmy Bee, Vector the Crocodile and, my personal favorite…
4. Espio the Chameleon, specifically
So I have that whole backstory I wrote above about how I came to love Knuckles, but I have no idea why I’m so interested in Espio the Chameleon. I think the dude just looks cool. And I think he’s also supposed to be a ninja? And he’s a reptile in a world of mostly mammals. I guess that was just neat to me.
Did you know that Knuckles can also go Super Sonic? When he collects all of the Chaos Emeralds, he turns into Hyper-Knuckles! He doesn’t get a unique character art style, but he’s still faster and fancier. If we get Super Sonic in the new movie, we should definitely get Hyper Knuckles in the TV show. It’s only fair. Speaking of whom…
2. Sonic the Hedgehog
Surely Sonic the Hedgehog is going to make at least a guest appearance in the Knuckles TV show, right? If they can get Idris Elba to do a whole show, surely they can get Ben Schwartz to stop in. And yes, I’m ranking Idris Elba higher than Ben Schwartz, because it’s obvious. I don’t know what role Sonic would play, but if the Simpsons can show up in Chief Wiggum’s New Orleans crime drama, surely Sonic can pay his old friend Knuckles a visit, too, right?
1. I dunno…Angel Island?
Look, I tried coming up with Knuckles-esque things to put in this list, but I’m just not that knowledgeable about Sonic the Hedgehog or Knuckles the Echidna lore. And I didn’t want this list to just be me naming random characters I like and wanna see cameo. So how about the TV show really delve into Knuckles’ life as the guardian of the floating Angel Island? There’s a very good chance we’re going to see the island in the upcoming movie, but a lot of the movie clearly takes place in the human world, like the first film. So maybe it’ll only get a passing appearance. Why not set the whole show on Angel Island? Fight bad guys, make friends…do Sonic stuff? I dunno. This show could be pretty much anything and I’m still gonna check it out for the sheer madness of it all!
