Behold Krypton; What Our Arrogance Has Wrought!

The TV executives were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should!

Confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, the Syfy network is apparently working on a TV show called Krypton, which will be about Superman’s grandfather living on the infamous planet decades before it blows up. I guess Syfy finally figured out what to do with all those leftover Caprica scripts…

This is where our arrogance has brought us, people. We were so excited to get great TV shows like Arrow and The Flash that we didn’t realize what was happening! Apparently DC and Warner Bros. are in some kind of rush to produce as many live action superhero shows as possible, regardless of whether or not the world needs them or they make any sense!

I mean, come on! Superman’s grandfather?! What the hell does he have to do with anything? How is this a show?! Alongside the obvious parallel, Gotham, it seems like Warner Bros. wants to have its cake and eat it too in the worst possible way. They won’t make a Batman or Superman TV show, but they’ll wildly throw out shows loosely based on those characters. And Gotham is one thing. At least that has a young Bruce Wayne, and an actually identifiable star in the legitimately interesting Commissioner Gordon.

But Superman’s grandfather?! Ridiculous!

According to initial reports, the show will be about this patriarch trying to bring hope and equality to a ruthless planet. How is that a Superman show? How?! Is there no one stopping and questioning whether or not any of this is insane? Or maybe DC is preying upon gullible networks who are desperate to leech off the good will of DC’s other shows and all those popular Marvel movies. Syfy clearly saw the recording breaking numbers of The Flash premiere and wanted to get in on that action, but they’ve clearly settled on the most asinine option possible.

So let’s see, what’s next? Atlantis? Themyscira? Mars? Thanagar?

I vote Thanagar!

  1. At this point they are just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

    • Absolutely! I was going to mention in the article that yesterday Geoff Johns confirmed that a live action Teen Titans show is going to pilot next year. I think DC is trying to win the TV game while Marvel wins the movie game. I would be fascinated to find out which one makes more money.

      • DC would make more money if they were smart and didn’t kept the tv and movie universes separated, and no, I will never let that go, they announced the actor for the Flash movie like 2 microseconds after The Flash premiered! What were they thinking?

That said maybe that way we’ll get an actually intimidating Amanda Waller.

Aside from that my main worry is that with so many superheroes movies and shows an implosion will come eventually when people will be sick of them.

      • That implosion could be coming, sure, but I’m of the belief that it won’t simply be an end to these movies. They would have to get really bad and really cheesy for there to be an ending. If Marvel still makes awesome movies, then why should they come to an end? Some new genre or theme is going to have to come along to replace them. I don’t think superheroes movies will implode on their own…unless they get really bad and worthless.

  2. What happened to the Booster Gold show syfy was going to do? I would rather see that. Also wouldn’t a Themiscara show do better, just imagine warrior chicks fighting greek mythology creatures like in 300.

    • I remember that Booster Gold show! Now that would have been good TV! And you’d think Themyscira would be a good idea, but there have now been multiple failed Wonder Woman TV shows in the past few years.

If they’re doing planets, why not Oa? There’s a freakin’ TV show!

  3. Wow, a live action Oa show would make my life. I agree that the concept of Krypton and Superman’s grandpa is stupid and uninteresting. But I’m still optimistic that producers don’t put effort into making shows that they know are dumb. Warner Bros could’ve given us an Aquaman show or something instead of this, so they must have a lot of faith that Krypton is an exciting show. I don’t think any superhero shows since Smallville have flopped, right? Arrow, SHIELD, Flash, Gotham, Constantine. I don’t know, it could go either way.

    • No! You’re not thinking dreary enough! Smallville actually had Superman in it, with super powers. Smallville had other superheroes and life lessons. Krypton has none of that! Krypton won’t even have super-powers (though they’ll probably squeeze them in somehow).
