I Am Once Again a Pokemon Master – Almost

I’m one week into Pokemon X, and I’m very much enjoying the game. So I thought I’d pop in and share with everybody my Pokemon shenanigans to see if anyone else is playing and what kind of fun they’re having. I hope I’m not the only Pokemon player reading my blog. Also, by way of some entertainment, here’s the ‘Chocolate Rain’ guy singing the Pokemon theme song, because I’m a fan of that guy.

I’m not all the way through the game yet, but I’m plugging along pretty well. I’ve been trying to catch every Pokemon I find for the fun of it. I’m not a collector, nor am I someone who likes to fill up his Pokedex. I just catch’em for the fun of catching’em.

I picked the girl character, like I do every Pokemon game, and named her ‘Whistler’, after a character from the Pokemon fan fiction I wrote back in high school. Because I am just that awesome…ladies. I’m loving the clothing boutiques because I love create-a-character modes in video games. I’m considering a second playthrough after I beat it just to see what options are there for the boy character.

Now obviously the question on everyone’s mind is what Pokemon am I using? I ended up going Team Chespin, so I’ve got a pretty badass Chesnaught right now. He’s joined by Charizard, Pangoro, Tyrantrum, Barbaracle and Heliolisk. But I’m planning to switch out Barbaracle and Heliolisk for a Noivern as soon as I can get my hands on one, as well as Xerneas, because I like having the legendary in my party at the end. So here’s going to be my Elite Four team:

I’m disappointed at how few of them can use Mega Evolutions, but then Mega Evolutions aren’t that great. On my next play through, I may make a team of only Mega Evolution Pokemon. Though I have to wonder why the new starters don’t all have a Mega Evolution, and why only Charizard has different Mega Evolutions for X and Y of the Kanto starters. What’s up with that? No love for Venusaur or Blastoise?

Once I beat the game, I’m going to recreate my Pokemon Blue experience by capturing Mewtwo and then using him alone to defeat the Elite Four. Mewtwo is my favorite Pokemon, and I’m thrilled that he’s in this game – even if I really hate his X Mega Evolution.

Speaking of things I hate, I really don’t care for the plot in this game, if there even is one. Once again, Nintendo and Game Freak just forge on ahead with the same story about a young kid going out in their Pokemon adventure, but it seems like they’re especially not trying this time around. The moment you step out of your front door you meet your annoying new friends and one of them just gives you your first Pokemon. The Pokemon Professor has even less for you to do this time around. The villain team isn’t noteworthy in the least, and of course the main villain is telegraphed from the moment he appears. Not even the legendary Pokemon are woven into the story very well. Worst of all, despite having four new friends, none of them are really rivals. I actually feel kind of bad beating up my main rival. He just wants to do well and make a strong team of Pokemon, but I beat him easily each time we battle. Poor guy. Maybe if he was a jerk like back in the original few games I’d feel better about kicking his butt.

But Pokemon is probably never going to fully solve their plot problem. Just gonna have to live with it. At least I think my character is cool.

So that’s my Pokemon X experience so far, what’s yours? What’s your team make up? What do you like about the game? What do you hate? Let me know in the comments! Maybe we could even swap Friend Codes. That’s what they’re called, right?

  1. I don’t know about your Pokémon team. Who learns HMs Swim and Waterfall? I imagine cut, strength, rock smash, and all them are easily taken care of. But what about HM Fly? Is Charizard your flyer? And what’s up with Noivern? He’s a dragon/flying right? Seems pretty redundant. I think Barbaracle is pretty neat but that does make the rock type redundant. And Helioptile seemed cool. I was going to get him until I found my Dedenne and met my electric type quota. Obviously Pangoro is amazing though.

My team is currently Frogadier, Pancham, Fletchinder, Dedenne, and Amaura. The 6th spot I’m leaving open for…I’m not sure yet. I was thinking my Legendary The big Y bird. But I don’t have a mega evolution on my team. They make such a big deal about it in the game, but none of the new Pokémon have a mega evolution. And I don’t like playing old Pokémon in new games (unless it is a theme team).

The big issue was the fossil Pokémon. They both have an insane amount of weaknesses, but at the time I didn’t have Dedenne so I needed to kill flying and dragon types, so I picked the Ice one. I beat the 4th Pokémon gym and put it down for a while. It was the electric gym and I got my ass handed to me. I beat it on the first try, but only because I kept using hyper potions on my Amaura until his Helioptile ran out of PP for Thunderbolt. Which is an expensive and terrible way to win. But I also never fight wild Pokémon so I don’t level up very quickly.

I think I have more fun on the sequels where I don’t catch and use my Pokémon from that game. I breed a custom team of level 1s to meet a theme and run them through the story. Like I told you about my Ghost team. But before that for Pokémon Platinum I made a Juggernaut team of all the Pokémon who evolve into giant monster Pokémon. So Magmortar, Electivire, Wailord, Rhyperior, Mammoswine, and Tropius. That was a lot of fun.

I’m not sure what I’ll do this time around for Pokemon Y 2. But I’m giving a lot of thought to the Game of Thrones team. Either way, I’m sure it’ll be more fun. Maybe they’ll improve the plot too. Though White was better than White 2.

    • I’ve found that Fly isn’t all that necessary unless I want to fly back to the other boutiques to see what new clothing they have on any given day, or to manage my berry farm. So I have a Talonflame in storage that I take out at least once a day to fly to those various places, then back in storage he goes.

I’m hoping Xerneas can handle Swim for any end-game swimming, otherwise I’ll keep Barbaracle in storage for any swimming and waterfalling.

I pick my team based almost entirely on awesomeness, regardless of any type redundancies. Like Chesnaught and Pangoro are both fighting, but there was no way I was going to play this game without Pangoro. For the same reason, I wanted the T-Rex and the bat-monster, because bats are my favorite animal and this is the first bat Pokemon to actually look cool. So that explains Noivern despite the redundancies on my team.

And you don’t fight wild pokemon? I guess I don’t either, at least not anymore. I did at first when I was trying to catch them, but now I just skip any wild pokemon I encounter if I haven’t caught them. They amount to such little XP, especially considering my entire team is like 10 levels higher than the current wild pokemon I’m encountering.

I might take you up on that theme team idea for a second play through. I’m sure I’ll be able to beat the game and start breeding by the time we hook up in November. We could start new games then and make all the appropriate trades between games.

And White/Black definitely had a great story. That one was really in depth and huge.

      • See, now I’m jealous of your “use whatever Pokémon you feel like” approach. Because whenever I do that, I always wind up missing something and being really weak to some specific type. Then if one of the Elite Four is that type, I’m screwed. I think that type was Fighting in Soul Silver and I had to redo the Elite Four several times. Then finally break down and replace one of my beloved teammates with Lugia

And I hate switching out Pokémon for the right HM because I’m an item collector and nothing drives me crazier than seeing an item I need to surf to and not bringing my surfer. Plus Fly and Surf are actually pretty decent in-battle attacks….Unlike Cut, Rock Smash, and Strength.

Ok so get this, I totally misunderstood the Experience Share in this game. So I knew no Pokémon had to hold it, but I thought it meant that my main Pokémon would get half the XP and the other half would be divided among my team. So I didn’t bother with it. But I just read online that the main Pokémon gets the full XP, then every other Pokémon on the team gets half of that….each! So if a Jigglypuff is worth 10 XP, then with Exp. Share on and a 6-Pokemon party, it ends up being worth 35 XP total. That’s INSANE!!! And it also explains why my team sucks so bad.

But other fun things I’ve noticed:
-My main character is male, but I also made him black because the game finally lets you do that, so why not do it? Same reasoning behind my female GTA Online character.
-My main neighbor rival is a Girl. I forget her name because she bores me.
-Is the girl with brown hair and pigtails still in your game? Because she clearly kinda has a thing for my character and I wondered if that translated over. Like at the big palace you watch the fireworks (or frou-works or whatever) and she makes a comment about being the first time she’s watched fireworks with a boy and it gets a little awkward and cute. Wasn’t sure how they handled it with the girl.
-I always name my main character “Red.” Like I always name Link “Link” in the Legend of Zelda games.
-Therefore I found the nickname thing absolutely awful. There is no nickname for “red.” I wanted everyone in the game to call him Red. But I wasn’t sure if there would be a unique purpose to nicknames. I never understand new Pokémon game mechanics anyways so who knew if this would be a big deal? I think I went with “Red Man.” So it works, I guess.

-What is up with Powers? There’s a guy in a purple suit who hands out powers. I can never understand anything having to do with silly Pokémon add-on mechanics.
-This is the first time I’ve farmed berries. It is brilliant especially since I really like to save my money for designer clothes.
-I’m actually really digging the French vibe in this game. It is neat.
-I love the roller blades. Screw the Bike.
-I hate the new Dowsing Machine. The fact that you can’t use a bike or roller blades at the same time as the Dowsing Machine is ruining my love of treasure hunting.

      • Usually my Pokemon are always super-strong, so I tend to have someone who can just whallop the specialty Elite Four when it comes to that. And I hope Xerneas can use Surf, because I would like to keep it around, but needing Surf in the game world does not trump my awesome team lineup.

I guess I misunderstood EX Share too. I thought my main Pokemon got half and the others split what was left. I’ve still used it, and all of my Pokemon level up like all the time. I’ve actually had to turn it off because I specifically didn’t want the various Pokemon to level up so quickly.

        – I assume all the hairstyles are still for white characters though? I’m tempted to make my next character black, because as you said, why not? Though now I’m realizing that Pokemon didn’t bother to make any of the important NPCs black, despite clearly having the possibility. They couldn’t have made Trevor black? Really?
        – Exactly! The rival is so incredibly boring! All he cares about is being a good Pokemon trainer, but then I defeat him soundly each time we battle! It’s depressing. At least the other friends have personalities, but I rarely battle them.
        – Yep, that girl is still in my game. I’m not sensing any romantic vibes, she’s just kind of clingy friend.
        – Yeah, the nickname thing threw me off. They suggested Lil’ W and I wanted to smack all of them. I just told them to call me ‘Whistler’ and it’s worked out fine. You could have stuck with ‘Red’.
        – That powers guy is incredibly creepy. But it’s in the multiplayer menu on the lower screen. They’re 3-minute boosts that you’re supposed to give to other players that happen to be in your network. Like it’ll increase all their pokemon’s Attack stat for 3 minutes or so. You can also use it on yourself. I don’t use it, other than the Bargain Power, which slightly reduces the cost of items at the Pokemart for 3 minutes. So just go into that O-Power menu and activate one of them on yourself and you’ll get some special thing for a short period of time.
        – And exactly! I’ve found that I can just keep planting Oram berries and basically get unlimited health potions. Granted, I can’t use them rapidly in battle, but if I’m healing up my Pokemon after a battle, I can just pump them full of free berries 10 HP at a time and I don’t need to waste money on potions. Same with the berries that cure poison.
        – Agreed on the French thing, it’s awesome. All of the games have supposedly been a different country. Pokemon Black and White took place, I believe, in America.
        – The roller blades have grown on me.
        – I also hate the new Dowsing Machine.
        – What’s your friend code? Facebook it to me because if you’ve got wi-fi, I bet we could already start trading Pokemon.

  2. Your team is pretty typical. That’s what I don’t like about it. I mean you have a main legendary of the X&Y games, a fossil Pokémon, a starter (not a big deal though), and the Kanto Starter. And on top of having the Kanto starter, it’s a Charizard. I’m not trying to down you, but I just wish you found different Pokémon to use that weren’t the typical ones to always be used against the Pokemon league. Once again though it’s fine though about your starter. Mine was Chespin too 🙂 My first team was Chesnaught, Roserade, Carbink, Hawlucha, Avalugg, and Goodra. In terms of Kalos Pokémon, one may consider my to be a typical Hall of Fame team as well.

    • I picked Charizard because I was Bulbasaur when I first played Blue back in the day. I base my team around looking cool and generally being awesome, which might be why it’s so typical.
