The 6 Best Easter Eggs in Batman: Arkham City
I love video game Easter Eggs, and Batman: Arkham City is littered with them! For anyone who doesn’t know, an Easter Egg is an in-joke or a wink to the fans that game developers put into their game for the sheer fun of it. Like finding He-Man in World of Warcraft, the beating heart in the Statue of Liberty in Grand Theft Auto IV or being able to play as Bill Clinton in NBA Jam. They don’t have anything to do with the main game; but if you’re a fan of the series, and you get the ‘joke’, they can bring a smile to your face. They are a real treat.
And when creating the ultimate set of Batman video games, the makers of Batman: Arkham Asylum and the new Batman: Arkham City went Easter Egg crazy!
The story of Arkham City (which I won’t spoil here), is an epic adventure that pits Batman against the Joker and Professor Hugo Strange. The game has Batman facing off against other classic rogues like Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin, Mad Hatter and more as he tries to solve the mystery of Arkham City and save the day! The game takes place in a sprawling map of Gotham City, featuring such notable levels as Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge, the Gotham City Police Station and Ace Chemicals, where the Joker received his vicious grin.
But hidden in the nooks and crannies of the game, far off the beaten path, are tons of Easter Eggs and references to other characters, villains and stories from Batman lore.
It was like that in the first game too. I loved walking around Arkham Asylum and randomly stumbling across Two-Face’s or Mr. Freeze’s cells. They were just there as part of a normal cell block, the way any prisoner’s cell would be. Well Batman: Arkham City has much more room to work with and a lot more ways to hide Easter Eggs. I won’t be spoiling the main story in this list, just a few of the fun and funny Easter Eggs that you can find hidden in the game.
Here are the 6 Best in Batman: Arkham City:
6. Black Mask: Here is one of Batman’s lesser known villains. Black Mask got a scavenger hunt reference in Arkham Asylum, but now we actually get to see him in the flesh in the sequel. He’s not important enough to actually get to fight the Batman in the main game, but he’s a prisoner in Arkham City nonetheless. You first see Black Mask right at very beginning, when Batman first enters Arkham City. When you head for Line A, if you look to the right of the prison yard, you’ll see Black Mask getting beaten by several guards. He’s trying to fight them off, only to get Tasered and kicked into submission. The moment has absolutely nothing to do with you, it’s just there in the prison yard for the fans to see.
Later in the Museum (more on that later), one of the display cases has the Black Mask’s mask. I’m still not sure what that means for the character. Did someone cut his face off?
Black Mask gets a scavenger hunt reference in Arkham City as well. One of the Riddler’s riddles has you looking for a ‘HOLE’ that Black Mask used to escape. In the southeast corner of Arkham City, you will find a hole that Black Mask exploded into the prison walls. You see, the premise of Arkham City is that officials have created a new prison by simply building a giant wall around a section of Gotham City. They simply cut off about 50 blocks from the rest of the city and tossed all the prisoners and asylum inmates in there to run wild. Batman goes in to try and shut it down.
Black Mask is one of those prisoners and his scavenger hunt clue is that he blew a hole through one of the walls to escape. Now it’s boarded up with signs warning other prisoners to get back. When you find the hole, you get a story of how Black Mask was the only prisoner to ever escape Arkham City. But they found him and brought him back, leading to that beat down at the very beginning of the game.

Should have just called him Black Skull
You may not fight Black Mask in the main game, but he is the focus of the two Challenge Maps from the Robin DLC. If you play the two maps as a Campaign, first you have to defeat the Mask’s thugs in his hideout. Then you get a cut scene of your hero (Robin, in my case) chasing the escaping Mask onto a freight train. You have to fight your way through four waves of thugs on the train, just like every Challenge Map. But Black Mask himself is in that fourth wave. He is much tougher to knock out, but just keep at it and he’ll go down like all the other thugs.
5. Joker Fish: Everybody loves Batman: The Animated Series from the mid-90s. Even non-comics fans watched that cartoon. And one of the most popular episodes was ‘Joker Fish’, in which the Joker poisoned the fish of Gotham City to all have his vicious smile. Did you know that episode was based on an actual comic book story? Anyway, it was a hugely popular episode and I found a Joker Fish in Batman: Arkham City.
If you search around the Steel Mill that the Joker uses as his HQ in the game, you’ll eventually found a box of his gags hidden in the basement. In that box are several joke items, and one of them is a grinning, red-lipped fish straight out of the cartoon.
On a side note, nearby the box, is a giant, yellow rubber ducky, like the Penguin’s big boat in the movie Batman Returns. For some reason, the head is all blown up. Perhaps there’s some Penguin vs. Joker backstory that we’re not yet privy to.
4. Killer Croc: One of the main villains of the first game, Killer Croc, only makes a cameo appearance in Arkham City. He’s not part of the main storyline, but if you know where to look and know how to find him, Batman will have a little chat with Killer Croc in the sewers of Arkham City. This Easter Egg is time sensitive, so make sure you do it during the main storyline when you’re down in the sewers. Croc is no longer around after you beat the game.
As part of the scavenger hunt in Arkham City, you can also visit the Croc’s lair in the sewers. You have to blow up a section of sewer wall to find the cramped, little room. Croc has a bed with his shackles broken off, and a few pictures of himself on the wall. He also has a book lying on the ground, which I thought was weird. I can just picture the massive Croc lying on his bed with reading glasses flipping through the novel.
3. Zsasz’s ‘cell’/Penguin’s Museum: As I mentioned before, there is a Museum in Arkham City filled with neat references to the Batman mythos, as well as giant dinosaur and wooly mammoth displays. The Penguin took over the museum, and he turned all of the display cases into his own gruesome menagerie of history. Visiting the museum is a big part of the game, so I won’t spoil any of the important displays, but some of the bonus ones are fun. The Penguin even recorded new sound bytes for each display case.
For example, in one of the display cases, Penguin has killed and stuffed the Joker’s pet hyenas.
In another display case, he has the Black Mask’s mask and a top hat from the Mad Hatter.
But my favorite display case is the one for Victor Zsasz, the insane serial killer. The reason it’s my favorite display is because it’s empty! The glass is broken! If you’re like me, then by this point in the game you’ve already started Zsasz’s side mission. The serial killer has taken several hostages, and he taunts Batman via payphones to try and find his lair and stop him from killing the hostages. So we already know that Zsasz is on the loose in Akrham City.
Then you find out when you visit the museum that Zsasz had been a prisoner of the Penguin. If you play the Penguin’s recording on the display case, he doesn’t seem to realize that Zsasz has escaped as he proudly introduces his prisoner. I just thought this connection to Zsasz was rather neat. The game developers could have just said that Zsasz was loose in Arkham City like everybody else. But instead, they went that extra step and established the seemingly unimportant back story that Zsasz actually escaped from the Penguin’s display case. This was a delightful discovery.
2. Scarecrow’s Creepy Boat: This is an absolute perfect Easter Egg! It’s completely hidden from view, requires a very specific series of steps to find and is absolutely mind-blowing! Thanks to video game site IGN for finding it for me. So far as I’ve searched, there is absolutely nothing in the game that points towards this small bit of insanity. You just have to know it’s there and know how to unlock it. Take a look:
The Scarecrow was a major villain in the first game, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Using his fear toxin, he would send Batman on these strange, out-of-body experiences that were the highlights of the first game. In the end, the Scarecrow disappeared. He doesn’t actually show up in Arkham City, but you can hear random thugs talking about his mysterious disappearance if you listen to the right groups. The Scarecrow has a presence, but he’s non-existent. Perhaps he’ll appear in the third game?
As part of the scavenger hunt in Arkham City, you can find Scarecrow’s mask hidden on top of a bridge near his scary boat. Those scavenger hunts are the best!
1. Crime Alley: This is where it all began. Where Batman’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, were gunned down by a mugger in an alley behind the Monarch Theater. It’s been popularized in almost all Batman TV shows and movies. It’s as iconic as superhero origins get. Well, the Monarch Theater is very visible from the very beginning of the game, with its big neon sign. And if you go around back to the alleyway, you find the chalk outline of Batman’s parents and a bouquet of roses that he left some time ago.
The game even allows you to ‘Pay Your Respects’ at the site.
It’s a quiet, simple moment, but it’s brilliant for longtime Batman fans. I mentioned before how Arkham City is several Gotham City blocks just walled off. The developers just had to include this iconic piece of Gotham City landscape in that walled-off section. Nothing forces you to visit Crime Alley. No part of the story has you visiting the site of your parents’ murder. It’s just there as a nod to the fans. And that’s what makes for a great Easter Egg.
Honorable Mention: Harley’s Stuff: Harley Quinn is the Joker’s right-hand gal, and as such, she’s a big part of Arkham City since Joker is one of the main bad guys. As I mentioned before, the Joker uses the old Steel Mill as his hideout in Arkham City. When you visit the Steel Mill later in the game, you have a chance to look around at Joker and Harley’s base of operations. Not only do you find the Joker Fish I mentioned earlier, but Harley has a few other important knick knacks lying around.
In one room, I found Harley’s diploma hanging on the wall. Harley Quinn used to be a psychologist working at Arkham Asylum until she started treating the Joker. The mad clown twisted her mind during their sessions until she fell hopelessly in love with him. But it seems she still kept the diploma.
In another room is the nurse costume that she wore in the first game, Batman: Arkham Asylum.
And lying on the ground right next to the nurse outfit is something rather surprising. It’s not so much an Easter Egg as it is a teaser for the next game:
What were your favorite Easter Eggs from Batman: Arkham City? Did I miss any really good ones? Let me know in the comments!

there is another easter egg if you beat new game plus during the credits you hear harley singing to her baby hus little baby dont you cry mommas gonna kill for you the whole d*** world. Also you get a voice mail from jocker of him singing a song forgot what its called but its pretty neat.
Thanks Isaiah! I’d heard about that song, but never got to experience it yet. I haven’t played New Game Plus. Saving that for some day when I’m bored.
Awesome post. Love it. I never knew about the pregnancy test, talk with Croc, or the scarecrow boat. Glad I found this 🙂 Also, you should be able to hear Jokers Voicemail where he sings “Only You” to Batman. It’s in the credits after you beat the game. I haven’t even started the Plus version yet. Anyways, keep up the good work! 🙂
I have done everything on the map and found all the trophies except the one that shows outside the map beyond the green line behind the steel mill and the last mission I completed was discovering the face doctor’s hide out and he gets away and batman uses the sequencer to escape his hide out and that’s it. There is nothing else to do except run around the city and beat up thugs just for the hell of it.. No credits no nothing. Furthermore the restricted area has not unlocked or is it suppose to? Is it that one trophy that’s keeping me from finishing the game? and if so, can someone tell me how to get to it? I can’t even put my marker on it when I have the map pulled up.
Robert,
You haven’t seen the credits yet? The trophies don’t affect the progress of the story and game, just the percentage of full completion. I have about half of the trophies to go still, but I’ve seen the credits and everything. I don’t think the restricted section unlocks. I’m not sure which trophy you mean, but I’d trust Sean. He seems to know what he’s talking about. 🙂
I’m at 71% progress, and I do not see anything left on the map that I can do. As for the trophy, that is left over, if you pull up the map and look at the industrial district side behind the steel mill you will see a trophy outside of the green line boarder that surrounds the map and I can’t even put my marker on it.
Well here is a link to all the trophies in the I dust rial district. I dk if you mean 11 or 14. But maybe this will help you to get it.
http://www.gamesradar.com/batman-arkham-city-riddler-guide/?page=8
What was the last thing you did in the story? Have you beat Hugo Strange yet?
I meant to say “11 to 14” those are the closest around the Steel Mill.
Trust in Gamesradar. Their guides helped me get through all the last Riddler Challenges. I believe if you pull up the map and flip through the various info pages, there’s a grid-like page that shows you how many Riddler Trophies or Challenges you still need to complete.
And don’t forget to interrogate the green-colored Riddler goons throughout the map. They’ll reveal more locations. There are also info hubs on rooftops that you need to hack, which I think will completely reveal everything that’s left.
And, of course, there are the physical challenges.
Yeah I got all the green men and completed all the riddle challanges. I’m not sure if I got all the info hubs on the roof tops. I have not found anymore of them though. The only thing left that shows on my map is that one trophy that I mentioned earlier. I will check out the link you sent me, hell I’ll try anything at ths point….
Yeah ol Hugo is history. The last 2 missions that I completed was saving all of Riddler’s hostages and then I found the face doctor’s hide out that made himself look like Bruce wayne, then he escaped and I had to use my sequencer to get back out of his place and after that nothing. I pull up my map and there’s nothing else to do except to somehow get that 1 trophy that I mentioned before and well Im at just a loss here.
Aha! I’ve got it. I just booted up my game again, and I’m only at 72%. To get 100%, you need to beat all of the Challenge Maps. You need to get all 3 trophies on all of the challenge maps. That’s…that’s a lot of work.
Yeah I see that my story line is at 100% but my overall progress is 71% but shouldn’t of I already seen the credits by now? and I found the alcove on the big wall but my grapnel does not work on it. I will have to glide into it somehow.
I got the last trophy!! but still no credits, hmmm…..
How weird. I think mine came up after I beat Hugo strange. No wait… It came up after I beat Clayface and Joker. Maybe you skipped through it on accident? I dk. That’s so strange.
I beat joker and clay face too. now I have one more weird one for you. I did one of the riddler challenges where you use a revers batarag to knock down a thug, I done this several times and I can’t get credit for the challenge
Is it on the new Batcave map? Or just in general? I was on the Batcave map yesterday trying to do it and I guess I didn’t do it right because I didn’t get the credit either. I think I was supposed to do a silent takedown while he looked the other way, but it didn’t really work. I’ve had some other friends say its kind of a pain to do the reverse batarang.
Batcave map????? what batcave map?
It’s a new riddler challange maps that came out yesterday, I believe. It has the Batcave on it, and a couple others, but one of the medals for the Batcave map is to do a reverse batarang on an enemy and then do a silent takedown while he is looking the other way. I thought that’s what you meant. Sorry. I don’t think I am even pulling off the reverse batarang correctly.
Oh okay, I didn’t do too many of the riddler’s map challenges yet. I was trying to do that reverse batarang thing on the story map and it just doesn’t work! unless I’m missing something.
Oh ok, I gotcha. I haven’t tried during story mode. I probably should practice it there. I think I need to go to the menu screen and see if I’m doing the move right. I hold down the aiming (LT) and then the button that says “reverse batarang” (RB) until it locks on, then I release it, but I just dk if I’m doing it right either.
I’ll have to try some more when I get off work. If you manage to figure it out, or learn a trick to it, please let me know lol.
Ok, I’ll do that..
you could saw credits after batman brought joker out and put him on gordons car..what is funny that i had progres 51% and it was already over of the game:-D
Hey Robert L, if that last trophy is the one I think it is, then you need to glide from the top of the Steel Mill. You access the green riddler trophy from the side of the prison wall, there’s a little alcove. I think it appears to be inside the green lined area, but the access door is on the side, around the corner. Or if gliding doesn’t work, freeze a part of the water and glide to that, then grapple up to the alcove.
And I don’t think the restricted zone becomes unlocked.
You forgot the easter egg of Prometheus in the GCPD building. There’s a small report paper behind the glass display case in the large room where Mr. Freeze is. It will say that Prometheus was discharged from the Asylum. You can assume he’s free, lurking about in Gotham City.
Ok I figured out the reverse batarang thing. hold down the LT button and aim it at a unsuspecting thug then hold down RB until it locks in on the thug then release the RB while still holding the LT.
Woah this blog is magnificent i really like reading your articles. Stay up the good work! You understand, lots of people are hunting round for this info, you could help them greatly.
If you try to decode frequency on coordinates 625 and 450 ( I think those are the numbers ) , you can hear a guy reading some numbers ….
When you turn those numbers into letters it says : I will return , batman
If u look closely around the map u will find little stuffed bears if u beat the bayne mission in the toy factory u will see alot of the bears around the map of arkam city
In Hush’s lair on one of the mirrors is scribbled Dead End – this could he a coincidence but it is the name of one of the most famous fan-made Batman films made.
That’s a good one!
A nice little egg is that Cat woman’s features are based on those of Sarah Wellock! The community manager of rocksteady games. Google for photos!
Good but you missed the scarecrows creepy radio signals on the water towers. After you find all of the signals and put them into the cryptograph, you will hear scarecrow saying I will return or something.
Great info, ijin nyimak Gan…?!
Jrangkong.com
My favorite moment in this whole game, is, without question, “Paying My Respects” to Martha and Thomas…
There is a new easter egg In the Harley’s revenge DLC that it show a baby carriage and a baby joker but a negative pregnancy test in the carriage
It is in the same room as the positive one
There are 3 radio frequencies of a man saying numbers using special decryptions u can turn it into a message 1 is I will get you batman another is u will pay for what u have done and the last is fear will tear Gotham to shreds. The messages sent by none other than the scarecrow
Go to the court house in the basement calendar man is locked in a cell and a calendar is outside the cell with dates go to the court house on those days or just change the date on your console by disconnected from Internet to do it
If u try to fly out of arkam turrets start to shoot at u
I believe the restricted area yous are referring to is the wonder tower. I don’t exactly have access to my game at the moment so I can’t go into detail but I’m sure that’s it
An Easter Egg is in Deadshots “closet” there is what looks like a lightsaber laying at the bottom. Also, after Protocol 10 is done and the whole cutscene is over, Ras is up there on the A. If you return afterwards, after you complete the story, the body is gone and the sword is stuck into the ground.
I’m not really sure if it’s been posted yet or not, but now that I think of it, I’m not sure if it’s really considered an “easter egg” now because it’s one of the Riddler’s Riddles basically. I can’t remember how it went exactly, but I believe it is located behind the casino, you will find a poster from Haly’s Circus(for all my comic book fans, you’ll know that Haly’s Circus is basically Dick Grayson’s home a.k.a. Robin, a.k.a. Nightwing.) that says; “The Flying Graysons” with a giant black bar across it that reads CANCELED. Clearly it’s referencing to the death of Dick’s parents, but the fact that instead of leaving it intact, they took the time to put that the show was canceled.
If you climb on top of Bane’s hideout and look up in the sky towards the moon or Gotham you may see a huge flying figure in the sky. I believe this is a Manbat easter egg. I am a huge Batman fan and I live for stuff like this so if you have more please keep me posted.
That’s one I’ve never heard of! I’m going to have to try it out. Thanks!
Huh…number 1, crime alley…batman is paying respects to a giant rabbit? Maybe mad hatter after all.
I already knew about all of these, but I’ve heard there is this really cool Easter egg in a challenge map I think is called something like the iceberg lounge. What it’s supposed to be, is that your fighting as batman against a bunch of penguins henchmen. In the backing you see penguin shouting at his crew, but what was really wierd was that killer croc was smoking a sigar in the background, so I reckon u should put that one in
I’d have to say that my favorite Easter egg in this is the “Duality of Man”. In the beginning of the game when you play as Catwoman in Two-Face’ office, you see a painting of a man carrying the corpse of another man that is entitled “Cain and Abel – Duality of Man”. At the end of the game you see Batman holding the corpse of Joker the exact same way as in a painting.
The Scarecrow stuff was my second and either Crime Ally or Harly singing “Hush Little Baby” during the credits is my third, I’d like to know what you guys have have to say about your favorite easter eggs in this are.
Wow, that painting one sounds pretty darn awesome.
I’ve Played “The Binding of Isaac” And I believe on the trivia for an item Called “Abel” And the fact theres a character named Cain, Well, According to the Trivia, In the bible, (Its a religious game but its still awesome I reccomend it) But Cain commited the first murder by killing his brother, Abel so yeah 😛
This game is a real mystery!.. The messages in the sequencer, disappearance of Ras ul Ghul after he he has killed himself, black mask and not too miss, the Paying your Respects task if u heard the radio nearby, hugo strange’s voice sends a message in which the last words were “It all ended where it all started” That mystery really put me in a mystery !!
I mean these words really put me in a mystery
That pay your respects bit has to be one of the saddest moments I’ve ever seen in a game, short of actually seeing young Bruce kneeling next to his parent’s bodies in the first game
youve missed the big-head batman easter egg:
1. to do this you need to use the cryptographic sequencer.
2. hold in both triggers and both bumpers.
3. rotate the left analog stick anti-clockwise and the right one clockwise at the same time.
4. do that for a few seconds then batman and evreyone in the game should get big heads.
You missed the Scarecrow Easter Egg
Well, Multiple ones honestly.
1. In Hush’s Hideout and the third Riddler Room, Theres Tanks of Fear Gas everywhere.
2. During Protocol 10, Dead inmates can be found with similar Style pattern clothing to Scarecrow’s clothing from Arkham Asylum.
3. And have you ever been looking around on the cryptographic Sequencers radio channels and heard Numbers being spoken? Some guy on a video found out that its a message Supposedly from Scarecrow. I thought “It could be from anyone dude” But they were letters Alphabetically (For Example If the voice said 1 They meant A) And they are scattered around the waves. Theres 3 of them and the first one is spelling out something I forgot (I’ll look around for it) The second one decoded said “You will pay for what you have done to me” and the finale proves its Scarecrow. “Fear will tear Gotham City to Shreds” and it ends after that and restarts so its not just random numbers its a message because like on the “Fear will tear gotham city to shreds” one, After saying the last S in Shreds (19), Then its makes a little jazzy BING noise and then restarts back to the F in Fear
The Last one is kinda creepy and Btw, Is the ship one you mentioned the one where you hack the door and it slides out of the way and inside are all these things of Cockroaches and a thug in that chair? Get up close to him and zoom in on him. Lol Though yeah, I think its Scarecrow’s Boat because the bill for the cockroaches is on there and the invoice number Has CRANE007 On it I believe (Crane for sure Just idk Numbers) and then on the note at the bottom it says “Dear Jonathan,” And Scarecrows name is Jonathan Crane so yeah. But The majority of these easter eggs you listed, I never knew about! Too bad I read this AFTER i beat the game so I can’t see Killer Croc. Ever since the part where You go into his lair in Arkham Asylum, I thought he was awesome
Generally I do not learn post on blogs, however I
wish to say that this write-up very pressured me to try and do so!
Your writing taste has been surprised me. Thank you, very nice post.
