Where There’s Mortal Kombat 1, There’s Smoke!
As I’ve surely mentioned many times on this blog, Smoke is my favorite character in Mortal Kombat, and one of my all-time favorite video game characters in general. The dude is just plain cool, and I have fond memories of reaching his stage in MK2 with my brother and cousin. It was an epic night of Toasties, I assure you.
Well, good news, everybody! Smoke will be a playable character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 game! We found this out in a new trailer showing off both Smoke and Rain!
Smoke looks cool, he plays cool, he gets to be the third wheel in the Sub-Zero/Scorpion team-up this game is going to have. As we all know, the plot of the new game is that the world has been remade by God King Liu Kang. Part of this new world has Sub-Zero and Scorpion as brothers in the Lin Kuei. That’s interesting.
Smoke’s bio got posted to the Mortal Kombat Discord.
A new and different origin, but nonetheless amazing! He’s not evil, he’s not some twisted robot. He’s a cool dude, with a cool backstory, and hopefully a fun part to play in the new game. Will he likely be killed and turned into a robot anyway? Yeah, possibly. It’s happened before, it could happen again. I’m just thrilled that my favorite Mortal Kombat character gets to come back and be awesome, at least for a little while.

How About Another Animated Mortal Kombat?
I never got around to watching Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge. It’s on my hard drive somewhere and perhaps I will one of these days. I definitely should watch it ahead of its brand new sequel. Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.
I definitely want to watch this new film because it has my favorite character, Smoke. That’s all it takes for me to watch. The animation looks really good in these movies. And it’s probably going to be far more accurate to the games and lore than the live action movie we got only a couple of months ago.
HBO should just make an ongoing Mortal Kombat cartoon series. Netflix got a lot of traction out of that awesome Castlevania show. A Mortal Kombat show could run for plenty of seasons, with so many characters. Think about it, HBO Max! You need more foundational shows!
Battle of the Realms comes out on Aug. 31.

6 Characters I Want to See in the Mortal Kombat Movie
The day will soon be upon us when we have a new live action Mortal Kombat movie to enjoy. The movie has been pretty quiet — until last week, when the first trailer dropped and blew all of our minds! What a great trailer! The Mortal Kombat movie looks pretty damn good!
Even more exciting about the trailer was the number of character cameos sprinkled throughout. We knew the likes of Liu Kang, Sub-Zero and Raiden were going to be in the movie — along with an original character named Cole, for some reason — but we saw glimpses of Reptile, Goro, Nitara and more! How exciting! I love the whole roster of Mortal Kombat characters. It was a geeky obsession of mine when I was a kid. So if this movie does indeed feature a ton of character cameos, I have a few suggestions.
Join me after the jump for the Mortal Kombat characters I really, really, really want to see show up in the new movie!

At long last, the first trailer for the new live action Mortal Kombat movie has arrived. And jeez louise, people, this movie is just going for it! They’re not being the least bit subtle. Just live action Mortal Kombat in all its glory!
I’m sharing the trailer here on my blog, but it’s a red band, so you may need to just click the link through to YouTube to watch. It’s definitely worth the trouble!
I don’t even know where to begin with this trailer! We saw a bunch of posters for characters yesterday, but clearly the movie is going to be chockful of Mortal Kombat characters. We saw Goro, we saw Reptile, and I think we saw my boy Smoke at one point! And that’s not mentioning all the main characters, like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Jax and a billion others! Again, this movie is just going for it!
Digital effects simply weren’t up to snuff back when the first movie came out. Perhaps now we’re ready!
Mortal Kombat comes to theaters and/or HBO Max on April 16!

How I Would Write a Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot
Word reached the internet the other day that the James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat movie reboot has begun pre-production, with the film eyeballing a 2021 release. That’s pretty cool news. I’m a big fan of the Mortal Kombat games, and an even bigger fan of the characters and the lore. I’ll grant you that the characters and lore have been through the wringer over the years, but there’s just something special about those palette-swapped ninjas that I will always love.
Being the creative guy that I am, I’ve decided to muse with you all about how I would write a Mortal Kombat reboot movie. I did this only once before with the potential Warcraft movie — and they didn’t follow my advice and the movie flopped. Let this be a lesson to James Wan and his people. What that lesson is, I can’t say for sure.
Anyway, the original Mortal Kombat movies are cult classics at this point. The first one is solid, but the sequel — Mortal Kombat: Annihilation — is one of those great laughing-stock movies. After that, we got that one really great fan film, which led to a pretty cool series of web-based shorts. I really enjoyed those. They were supposed to lead to a bigger movie reboot, but that never materialized. Instead, we’ve arrived at this James Wan project.
Join me after the jump for how I’d make a new Mortal Kombat movie!
