Yep! We’re Getting That Ant-Man Comic!
There have been a ton of announcements out of New York Comic-Con this weekend, and I’ve only been posting a few due to things like laziness and weekend. But I definitely wanted to mention the official announcement of the new Ant-Man series to line up with the upcoming film. The comic will star Scott Lang, and will be written and drawn by Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas. I loved Spencer’s Superior Foes of Spider-Man, so here’s hoping for some great Ant-Man action!
I love the new costume design. Seriously, Ant-Man has some of my favorite superhero costumes of all time (and he also has some real stinkers). It sounds like the series is just going to be Scott Lang doing normal, superhero things. Here’s hoping Spencer can find the same magic that made Hawkeye such an amazing comic.
Of the series, Spencer said:
“I’m just so excited to be doing this book,” Spencer said, saying this had been on his radar since the summer of 2013. Featuring Scott Lang, “Scott is a character I really connect with,” he said. “Scott wants to be a hero and he wants to be a good guy, but he’s got a checkered past, he has a tendency to take shortcuts and get in his own way… all these marks of a great Marvel character.”
Sounds like a pretty solid basis for an Ant-Man series to me! I hope they keep love interest Darla Deering around from the pages of Matt Fraction’s FF!

Marvel Clearly Takes My Advice on Ant-Man Casting!
Clearly, Marvel Studios was waiting for me to get up my recent Ant-Man List of Six before they made any permanent decisions about the upcoming Ant-Man movie. Because less than a week after posting my list, Marvel has announced that they’re going with my No. 1 choice and making Scott Lang the star of the film. Marvel confirmed today that Paul Rudd will be playing Lang, the second Ant-Man in the comics.
And Michael Douglas has been cast as Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, according to Variety.
This is very flattering. I’m glad Marvel waited to get my two cents before moving ahead with the casting. Obviously, Marvel and Edgar Wright know that I am available for further consultation. I’ll leave that to them.
Said Paul Feige about the casting of Michael Douglas as Pym:
“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”
With both Pym and Lang set, I think it’s safe to say Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie is probably going to be the origin story of Scott Lang, and how he stole the Ant-Man costume from Pym in order to steal the money necessary to afford his daughter’s medical operation. I think that would be a pretty solid movie, if I do say so myself.
6 Things I Want to See in the Ant-Man Movie
The Marvel movie I am most looking forward to in the next few years is Ant-Man. And I’m including Avengers 2 in that list. I don’t know what it is exactly that has me so excited. Is it the quirky, colorful nature of the C-list superhero? Is it the perfect casting of Paul Rudd? Or maybe Marvel hiring Edgar Wright, one of my all-time favorites, to sit in the director’s chair?
Whatever the case may be, I cannot wait for Ant-Man to shrink onto the big screen in 2015!
Production is ramping up as Wright gets ready to start filming. He’s teased the costume, he’s announced his lead actor, and just the other day on his blog, Wright posted that he’s watching episodes of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for inspiration. (He posted about one episode in particular, which we’ll talk about in a moment). Ant-Man is going to kick off Phase 3 of the Marvel movies. The film is going to prove if, after Avengers 2, the fans have enough faith in Marvel to watch a film that isn’t about Iron Man, Thor or Captain America. I think it’s going to be a huge success.
But since we still have time, how about a few suggestions for what I’d like to see in the film. Here are my six best ideas for Ant-Man, and feel free to show your own wants and desires in the comments!
