It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a New Man of Steel Trailer

What better way to celebrate Assassin’s Creed Week than with a new Man of Steel trailer! Because this full trailer just came out today!

Now that’s one meaty movie trailer! I’m actually rather pleased to see that the next Superman movie isn’t just going to be an action/explosion fest. Looks like we might actually get some kind of deep exploration of Superman as a person and the responsibilities of his power. Call me a geek if you want, but that sounds fascinatingly fun! This trailer is definitely a winner.

Superman Gets Arrested

Looks like Superman might be spending some time in the hoosegow in next year’s Man of Steel.

Arrested for jaywalking

He does know he can break out of those at any moment, right?

I kid, I kid, of course he knows. He just chooses not to, because he’s Superman. Did that just blow your mind? I both like and dislike this movie poster, for different reasons. I like it because it promises something new and interesting happening to Superman. Arrested by some army-looking dudes? Why? What for? And what is prompting Superman to let it happen? Of course he could bust free of a simple pair of handcuffs and escape these guys. But Superman chooses not to do so. And his reasons might make for an interesting Superman scene.

I hate it because it’s another movie poster that looks completely lifeless due to Photoshop. Why are all the soldiers washed out? Why is the light so awkward? I realize it’s to make the poster look ‘kewl’, but all it does is cloud the image and the importance. Ah well. At least I’m still looking forward to Man of Steel.

Could Joseph Gordon-Levitt Play Batman in the Justice League Movie?

UPDATE: This rumor has been denied by Gordon-Levitt’s people. Darn you, Hollywood agents, couldn’t you just let us believe a little bit longer? Even still, the fact that this would be an awesome casting choice is still cool.

The rumor around today is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to play Batman in the upcoming Justice League movie. The news is courtesy of Hit Flix, and really is just an unsubstantiated rumor at this point. No official word from either Gordon-Levitt or Warner Bros. And I usually hate publishing this kind of Hollywood casting rumor, but it’s a slow news day, and I think this would be awesome.

Will it happen? Maybe, maybe not. But then I’m still not convinced that a Justice League movie will be released in 2015.

This guy, this is the guy

I’m not going to play it safe with The Dark Knight Rises. There will be SPOILERS in this article, but I’m just going to assume that anybody who reads this geektacular blog has probably seen The Dark Knight Rises. But if, for some reason, you’re still waiting for the DVD release next week, then turn away now!

DC Comics is Going to Try Again With Superman

This can’t be good news for the replacement writers on Superman and Action Comics. But DC has announced a brand new Superman comic – called Man of Steel – that will be written by superstar writer Scott Snyder and drawn by superstar artist Jim Lee. It will come out next year, not so coincidentally alongside a new Superman movie that is also titled Man of Steel.

Look at him break stuff like a pro!

Jim Lee, of course, is one of the most popular comic book artists of the modern day, and one of the big wigs at DC Comics corporate. He was also the artist entrusted with starting the New 52’s flagship Justice League series.

Scott Snyder is currently writing the spectacular and incredibly popular Batman series, and is the mastermind behind both the Court of Owls and the current, highly rated Joker storyline.

So clearly DC Comics is banking hard on this new Superman series.

But that makes me wonder how the new creative teams of the current Superman comics – Action Comics and Superman – must now feel. I mean, jeez, why don’t DC just hang big signs around their neck that their comics won’t matter in the wake of Man of Steel? I can’t imagine that the Superman comics are doing so well that Superman could support three ongoing series. Batman is doing it, but just barely. And Superman is not as popular as Batman.

DC has actually had a bit of trouble with Superman in the New 52. Grant Morrison has been writing a pretty popular Action Comics, but he’s leaving in the new year, to be replaced by Andy Diggle. Not to talk down on Mr. Diggle’s work, but he’s no Grant Morrison. Nobody is Grant Morrison. Though personally, I haven’t been a big fan of Morrison’s Action Comics. Considering it was supposed to be the main Superman title in the new reboot, Morrison went really insane really fast, which I thought was disruptive in the context of a reboot.

And then Superman the series has had four different writers in just one year, with Scott Lobdell taking over in September. And readers of my blog will know that I’m no fan of Scott Lobdell’s work on Teen Titans – though I am sort of enjoying his work on Red Hood and the Outlaws. But Scott Lobdell is no Scott Snyder or Grant Morrison or anybody else. Not to be mean, but he’s not an A-list talent in the comic book world. After losing George Perez – who was very vocal about why he left Superman – and Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens, it seems like DC just looked around their office for someone who wasn’t mad at DC Comics and just threw Lobdell into the slot.

So clearly Superman has been floundering in the New 52, whereas characters like Batman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman have exploded out of the gate. This new Man of Steel comic may turn things around and give us some quality Superman stories…but why not put Snyder and Lee on one of the existing Superman books? Why try to support 3 identical Superman comics?

Though I definitely think I’ll be buying Man of Steel when it comes out. Snyder and Lee are great!

New Superman Teaser Trailer is an Odd Little Duck

The first teaser trailer for next year’s Man of Steel debuted over the weekend. It’s…odd.

That’s the version I saw, which features Kevin Costner’s voiceover as Pa Kent. I knew the teaser was going to happen prior to The Dark Knight Rises, so when it started, I was excited. But now I just find the poor thing odd. Superman trying to find himself? Deep sea fishing? Hitchhiking? What the heck kind of movie is this?

It’s like the main inspiration for the film was Five for Fighting’s Superman song. It’s not easy to be Superman, folks. He’s just a dude in a funny red sheet.

At least they threw in that bit at the end where Superman breaks the sound barrier. That was kind of cool. But all I could think about was the shot of Iron Man flying in his first trailer. Except Iron Man was flying alongside fighter jets, and people were excited.

I can’t imagine too many people were excited by this trailer.

I applaud DC and director Zack Snyder for moving away from the classic Superman films, but I don’t know if quiet, introspective Superman film was the right direction.

Though I will say that the second version of the trailer, the one with Russel Crowe as Jor-El doing the voiceover, is a little better. This was the international version of the trailer, check it out:

I like that one a lot better. I guess it’s all in the words.

Behold the dark and moody movie poster as well:

I do so hope Superman gets to punch something in this film
