Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/22/18
Is anybody reading all the weird stuff that’s going on with Venom these days? I understand it’s some noteworthy stuff, and it’s getting a lot of buzz on these here internets, but I can’t bring myself to care — and the movie is only two weeks away! Would anybody mind letting me know in the comments if it’s been worthwhile or not? Thanks!
I’ve mostly been sticking with comics I already love and adore, which is great for my general well being! Tom King on both Mister Miracle and Batman? Yes, please! Kelly Thompson on both Mr. and Mrs. X and West Coast Avengers? You’re damn right!
Mister Miracle wins Comic Book of the Week as we dive headfirst into the climax of one of the biggest, craziest comics of the year!
Meanwhile, I am completely ignoring the Return of Wolverine and the Infinity Warps stuff. Part of me knows they’re probably OK, and I’m sure the creative teams are great, but I have had my fill of Marvel’s attempts to either force Big Event comics to tie into recent movies, or deluge us with bringing Wolverine back, even though they made sure he wasn’t really gone anyway. There’s already been, like, several dozen different comics about Wolverine’s return. Just bring him back already, jeez louise! I can’t imagine there is anybody out there who is chomping at the bit to have regular Wolverine back so badly.
Speaking of which, I passed on the new issue of Thor because of its Wolverine indulgence. Hopefully I get caught back up on Thor soon…

It’s Kelly Thompson Week! This lady is on fire at Marvel right now, and we get two of her books this week, Mr. & Mrs. X and West Coast Avengers! That’s pretty darn awesome! We’ve also got more Superman and Spider-Man comics, but who cares about them?
Comic Book of the Week goes to the first issue of Thompson’s new West Coast Avengers for a really fun team book that doesn’t waste any time — though I had more than a few nitpicky problems.
Fair warning, everybody, I was apparently in fine form writing these reviews this week. Nothing particularly stood out as all that great, while I found so much to nitpick to death, including in some of my favorite comics!
Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1001, Amazing Spider-Man #4, Mr. & Mrs. X #2, The Silencer #8 and West Coast Avengers #1.

I’ve decided to give Gwenpool a try. I had very little use for that weird Gwen Stacy fetish that popped up a couple years ago, but all of the clippings I’ve seen of the Gwenpool comic have seemed pretty amazing. So the first tpb is on order! I’ll let you all know how it goes.
Meanwhile, in regular comic land, it’s a pretty sad week. We must say goodbye to two of my favorites, Hawkeye and Iceman, the latter of which earns Comic Book of the Week! I’ll miss them both!
Marvel’s Countdown to Infinity kicked off this week and I couldn’t care even a single iota. I didn’t read the issue and I keep skipping all these single page “Where is Wolverine” bits that show up at the end of comics. Just like Civil War II, this reeks of being a slapped-together event to tie into the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie. I don’t care.
I do care about Kelly Thompson’s Rogue & Gambit mini-series, which remains awesome! I hope they keep her around the X-Men franchise!
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #797, Batman #42, Hawkeye #16, Iceman #11 and X-Men Red #2.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/10/18
Here we go again! Last week, I complained that there were too few comics released that I read and review. This week apparently makes up for that deficit! We’ve got Spider-Man, we’ve got Hawkeye, we’ve got Iceman, we’ve got so dang many comics! Including the debut of X-Men Red!
Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Runaways! It’s a delightful issue capping off the first storyline. And just in time for me to finish the Runaways TV show, which I also enjoyed.
I’ll talk more about the Runaways TV show in a couple weeks. For now, I liked it and am looking forward to a second season.
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #795, Batman #40, Harley Quinn #37, Hawkeye #15, Iceman #10, Runaways #6 and X-Men Red #1.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/6/17
Welcome to the first comic reviews of the new year! I don’t have any real comic book resolutions this year, or any new comics I’m particularly looking forward to. I’m just going to like what I like and read what I want — while making more of my own comics!
Light week for me this week. We’ve got another wonderful Batman issue, and I check back in with Captain America and Iceman. Comic Book of the Week goes to a rather enjoyable issue of Hawkeye, which uses a guest appearance from Hawkeye to great effect.
Anybody read X-Men: Grand Design? It’s a neat little comic that recaps the early days/years of the original X-Men and the various supporting characters. It’s very specific in a lot of fun ways. And it had an extended bit on the Mimic joining the team, so I was happy with that.
Comic Reviews: Batman #28, Captain America #697, Hawkeye #14 and Iceman #9.
