Chris Pratt as Star-Lord! This is Awesome!

Marvel has once again scored an awesome casting coup by scoring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film! If you’ve never heard of him, Pratt is spectacular and hilarious as Andy on Parks and Recreation, one of my favorite TV shows.

What a handsome guy

So I am incredibly excited by this news! I love Pratt, and I think he would be absolutely perfect for the semi-comedic role of Star-Lord. Not much has been released about what we can expect from Guardians of the Galaxy, but if Star-Lord is anything like he is in the comics, Pratt will be perfect. Even if they have to cover up his pretty mug with Star-Lord’s badass helmet.

Not quite as handsome, but he makes up for it in badassery

For those who don’t know, Star-Lord is the leader of the Guardians, and the only human on the team. He’s the smart, clever, and sarcastic one, with a great sense of human. He’s also an action star. I think this could be a real career-maker for Chris Pratt. I am very, very excited by this news. And if you aren’t watching Parks and Rec, you definitely should be.

Marvel Has Got Space Characters Too!

I posted yesterday about Threshold, the new DC Comics space series. Well not to be outdone – especially with a big movie on the way – Marvel revealed their space-based comics at a panel at NYC Comic-Con. First up we have the new Guardians of the Galaxy, written by Brian Michael Bendis.

Young, attractive, blonde male make the best lead characters

As you can see, the team will feature Starlord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax and someone who appears to be a space-armored Iron Man. This is the exact lineup as the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014. I wonder if these will be their movie costumes. The inclusion of Iron Man clearly has to do with the shared Marvel movieverse, considering Iron Man is probably the most popular character from the movies. So why not garner some fan attention for the Guardians by throwing Iron Man onto the team?

Personally…I’m not impressed. I’m a huge fan of Bendis, don’t get me wrong, but I was never particularly fond of his Avengers comics, and I doubt I’ll pick up his Guardians comic. I tend to buy comics based on my favorite characters, and none of my favorite Guardians are going to be in this series. I’m sure it will be great, I’m sure Bendis has some great ideas lined up. I just doubt it’s for me.

But I really do hope this works out for Marvel, and I can’t wait for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie!

Next up we have the new Nova series by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness.

Alas, if only he’d been blonde

Sure enough, the new Nova is revealed to be Sam Alexander, a teenager who has taken up the Nova mantle after original Nova, Ritchie Ryder, was lost in space. Sam Alexander is also the same Nova who is appearing in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. He also had that big cameo in the last issue of Avengers vs. X-Men.

Gotta say, I’m also not interested in this one. I loved Ritchie Ryder’s Nova during and after Annihilation, but I have zero interest in reading a new Nova just for Nova’s sake. And Jeph Loeb’s comics haven’t been too great, as of late. I’m just don’t particularly care.

So it looks like both these comics will pass me by. There’s still one more day of the NYCC though, so there may be even more new series announced that I can get behind!

The Rocket Raccoon Mug of My Dreams

Curse you, Marvel Comics! The one year I decide not to go to the New York City Comic-Con and you open your own store!

Moichendising!

I want that mug. It’s so shocking adorable and awesome! Rocket Raccoon is going to star, and possibly be a breakout character, in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014. Marvel isn’t going to have any footage or anything to show at the NY Comic-Con this year, but clearly they can start merchandising!

But aargh! This is the year I decided not to go to the Comic-Con! I’ve gone the past two years in a row – and loved The Avengers footage they showed last year – but my brother and I decided not to bother this year. Someone out there in Marvel Comics land must have found out, and this is their punishment. The mug is only $12 at the show, but you know it’ll be $100 on eBay soon after.

You can check out the rest of Marvel’s exclusive booth merchandise here.

Any of my readers going to be in NYC for the Con this year?

Marvel Movie News from Comic-Con

The biggest news to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, in my opinion, were the announcements of Marvel’s next batch of superhero movies. There was a lot of stuff going down at Comic-Con, but I think this was the biggest. WB made some mention of their next Superman movie, but I’m not too impressed. It’s the Marvel stuff that has me excited!

So even though it’s old news at this point, I still want to give my two cents.

First up, the announcement I’ve been waiting for: Ant-Man!

I’ve been following Ant-Man coverage for as long as I’ve had this blog, and to finally get the official announcement that Edgar Wright is going to start directing is exciting! Not to mention finally getting that logo. Plus the minute-long test reel that he filmed last month was shown in its entirety to the crowd. I, of course, haven’t seen it, and it hasn’t made it to Youtube yet. But You can check out some Twitter reactions here.

From what I’ve managed to gather, the Ant-Man suit is black with red fringe, and it looks more like Eric O’Grady’s more modern costume. It’s steampunkish, I guess. Filming is expected to begin next year, and I am very excited.

Ant-Man is quite possibly the movie I am most looking forward to out of all movies in the next 5 or so years. And that includes Avengers 2.

Iron Man 3 actually had a mini-trailer shown at Comic-Con, which is kind of exciting. Who knows when we’ll get to see the first real trailer, but I’m excited that the film is coming along so well. Apparently in the footage people saw the Iron Man armor simply flying across the room to Stark, rather than having him standing in a giant machine that puts the armor on him manually. Now he controls it with his mind – which is the point of the Extremis storyline in the comics, of which the new movie will be based. Although considering that the armor looks like…

I can’t say I’m too pleased. That’s supposed to be his new Iron Man 3 armor, and it looks silly. Who though it would be a good idea to inverse the gold and the red? It looks hideous.

Though we do have confirmation that Ben Kingsley is playing a variation of the Mandarin, which is awesome! Ben Kingsley seems perfect for the role, and I definitely wanted Mandarin in this film. That he won’t be the a negative stereotype Chinese man is fine. PC him up a little. Works for me.

Not much news came in about Thor 2, other than the fact that they’re not going to call it ‘Thor 2’. I find that fascinating, considering that all of the Iron Man sequels have been numbered. Calling it ‘Thor 2’ just seems  obvious. But ‘The Dark World’? Sounds foreboding. I’m hoping he goes to visit the Underworld, otherwise known as ‘Hel’ in the Norse mythos.

It makes a little more sense that the Captain America sequel has a subtitle, since his first film was Captain America: The First Avenger. So at least Captain America: The Winter Soldier is keeping that bit. Again, not much news came out other than the title – but what an exciting title. That is the exact #6 suggestion on my list of 6 Things I Want in the Captain America, Iron Man and Thor sequels. So I’m glad to see that Marvel Studios are reading my blog lists. The Winter Soldier is a badass character with potential for a badass storyline. So I’m excited.

We all knew it was coming, and Marvel has finally confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy will be coming out in 2014. I still think this is a risk on their part. Obviously movies about space heroes have had some success in the past. But I think it’s going to be jarring for the public to be thrown into this space-themed world when they’re expecting the more grounded, realistic Avengers sort of superhero action. And say what you will about The Avengers film, it was definitely grounded in realism. They may have been larger than life heroes fighting an endless army of aliens, but compared to what they could have done, that film was riding on its sense of realism.

I don’t know if Guardians of the Galaxy can do the same thing. Especially not with this cast.

The Avengers in Space!

That’s real, actual concept art from the upcoming film. We’ve got, from left, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Starlord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora. Anyone not familiar with this group click here for an earlier write up I wrote on the comic and team. It looks like a fantastic team, and one that sticks very close to the series that came out a few years ago. But again, I just think the non-comics-loving movie audience isn’t going to grasp the Guardians of the Galaxy the same way they did The Avengers.

Though I will always be behind a movie that brings Rocket Raccoon to the masses.

Something Big is Happening at Marvel Comics

The Marvel Comics Universe that we all know and love…isn’t going anywhere. There isn’t doing to be a big, DC-style reboot. But hints and rumors over the past few months seem to at least be pointing towards a fresh coat of paint. Some of Marvel’s most popular writers and artists are going to be switching to different books, many of which are probably going to get shiny, new #1 issues. The rumors also point towards new teams, new lineups and new motivations for our favorite characters.

You know, like the last dozen or so times they’ve done such a thing

The characters aren’t going to be rebooted wholesale – like DC Comics did in 2011 – but it seems that Marvel is at least relaunching their line in a new direction. Possibly called ‘Marvel Now’.

More information is expected to be released at the San Diego Comic-Con next week. But I want to do a little speculating before we know for sure, because I have a theory about what’s going to happen, and I’d like to see if I’m right. Plus I’d like to hear what some of you guys think about the possible changes before we’re actually drowning in those very change. Right now everything is just rumor and speculation. All of which you can read about after the jump!
