My Soul is Crushed – Director Edgar Wright Has Stepped Away From Ant-Man

I don’t even know how to process this news. It’s heart-breaking. It’s disastrous. It’s apocalyptic! Edgar Wright, director of some of my most favorite films, like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, has stepped away from directing Ant-Man for Marvel Studios! I just…I’m speechless! I was looking forward to Wright’s Ant-Man more than Avengers: Age of Ultron! This is the worst news in the pop culture world!

I had a dream, once…

This was the statement released by Marvel today:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

Ugh. I just don’t know what to think. Ant-Man was going to be legendary. It was going to be the best Marvel film. Everything was lined up perfectly. Wright has been attached to the film since 2006!

What the heck went wrong?!

Marvel Clearly Takes My Advice on Ant-Man Casting!

Clearly, Marvel Studios was waiting for me to get up my recent Ant-Man List of Six before they made any permanent decisions about the upcoming Ant-Man movie. Because less than a week after posting my list, Marvel has announced that they’re going with my No. 1 choice and making Scott Lang the star of the film. Marvel confirmed today that Paul Rudd will be playing Lang, the second Ant-Man in the comics.

And Michael Douglas has been cast as Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, according to Variety.

He’s a man of SCIENCE!

This is very flattering. I’m glad Marvel waited to get my two cents before moving ahead with the casting. Obviously, Marvel and Edgar Wright know that I am available for further consultation. I’ll leave that to them.

Said Paul Feige about the casting of Michael Douglas as Pym:

“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”

With both Pym and Lang set, I think it’s safe to say Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie is probably going to be the origin story of Scott Lang, and how he stole the Ant-Man costume from Pym in order to steal the money necessary to afford his daughter’s medical operation. I think that would be a pretty solid movie, if I do say so myself.

6 Things I Want to See in the Ant-Man Movie

The Marvel movie I am most looking forward to in the next few years is Ant-Man. And I’m including Avengers 2 in that list. I don’t know what it is exactly that has me so excited. Is it the quirky, colorful nature of the C-list superhero? Is it the perfect casting of Paul Rudd? Or maybe Marvel hiring Edgar Wright, one of my all-time favorites, to sit in the director’s chair?

Whatever the case may be, I cannot wait for Ant-Man to shrink onto the big screen in 2015!

Do you want to get ants? Because this is how you get ants

Production is ramping up as Wright gets ready to start filming. He’s teased the costume, he’s announced his lead actor, and just the other day on his blog, Wright posted that he’s watching episodes of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for inspiration. (He posted about one episode in particular, which we’ll talk about in a moment). Ant-Man is going to kick off Phase 3 of the Marvel movies. The film is going to prove if, after Avengers 2, the fans have enough faith in Marvel to watch a film that isn’t about Iron Man, Thor or Captain America. I think it’s going to be a huge success.

But since we still have time, how about a few suggestions for what I’d like to see in the film. Here are my six best ideas for Ant-Man, and feel free to show your own wants and desires in the comments!

Ant-Man Tease Just for the Fun of it

Edgar Wright has started working on the Ant-Man movie, and thanks to the magic of Twitter, he’s decided to grace us all with a bit of a sneak peek.

He’s been celebrating The World’s End this whole time

I’m fairly certain that this isn’t an actual picture from the set, but is instead a scene from that brief bit of footage they showed at Comic-Con. We still haven’t seen a fully realized, officially released version of that yet, but we have seen a bit of it online, and I definitely liked what I saw. And I definitely like seeing this picture here. It’s Ant-Man! It’s finally happening!

I really like the costume so far

I Should Be Chastised For Forgetting to Post This New The World’s End Trailer

Not that I have any oversight on my blog, or have any other expectations about what I post, but I really think I should have posted this new trailer for The World’s End sooner. The problem was that it debuted on Yahoo and I’m just not savvy enough to post videos that aren’t Youtube. I might also be a teensy bit lazy.

It’s another awesome trailer for what I’m sure will be an awesome movie. And I know I have awesome people reading my blog, so let us all share in just how awesome this movie season is going to be. Rock on.
