Paul Rudd as Ant-Man is a Brilliant Choice
I still don’t know if this is 100% confirmed by Marvel yet or not, but big time trade publications like Variety and the Hollywood Reporter have announced that Paul Rudd is wrapping up negotiations to play the star of Marvel’s Ant-Man film in 2015. This is fantastic news! Paul Rudd has been the rumored front runner for the role for a few months now, but this is starting to sound gloriously official.
I am fully behind this casting. Honestly, since I first heard Paul Rudd was up for the role, I immediately couldn’t picture anybody else. He’s got the charm, he’s got the comedic chops, but he can also be devastatingly serious with the right material. Plus, just picture him as the underdog class clown in The Avengers cast. He’d be a different kind of funny than Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, while still being able to hold his own and with a unique place in that court of heroes – even if the timing of the movies wouldn’t put him on the team until Avengers 3 in 2018.
Plus the prospect of Paul Rudd working with Ant-Man director Edgar Wright is all kinds of exciting.
Of course, we don’t yet know who Rudd will play. There have been several Ant-Men over the years, though the leading contenders are probably the original, Hank Pym, a super scientist who invented the shrinking technology, and Scott Lang, a single dad who once stole Pym’s Ant-Man equipment, but had a change of heart and used it for good. We don’t yet know which character is going to be in the movie, but I think Rudd could play either one.
If you can’t tell, I am very excited by this casting. Very excited.
Ant-Man Tease Just for the Fun of it
Edgar Wright has started working on the Ant-Man movie, and thanks to the magic of Twitter, he’s decided to grace us all with a bit of a sneak peek.
I’m fairly certain that this isn’t an actual picture from the set, but is instead a scene from that brief bit of footage they showed at Comic-Con. We still haven’t seen a fully realized, officially released version of that yet, but we have seen a bit of it online, and I definitely liked what I saw. And I definitely like seeing this picture here. It’s Ant-Man! It’s finally happening!
First Official Looks at Ant-Man, Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Marvel has released a preview video of all of their upcoming movies, and while I don’t have the actual video, I have the next best thing: screenshots! Though I suppose you could always click here to go see the video. Your call.
Along with some neat talk about all of the upcoming movies, especially Iron Man 3, the video shows us some of the first official looks at Ant-Man, Falcon and Winter Soldier. But I’m going to save them for after the jump.
I wouldn’t want to spoil anybody! Seriously though, click the jump, because they look awesome. I especially love the look of Ant-Man. It may not be the finished design, but it’s brilliant nonetheless.
The Ant-Man Test Footage The Studio Doesn’t Want You To See
Marvel recently played the Ant-Man movie test footage at an event in London, and some enterprising person in the audience captured it on their phone. It’s of the typical crummy quality, but honestly, it’s a pretty good video. You can see everything rather well. The video is being scrubbed from the Internet as quickly as Marvel can manage, but some foreign Asian video service still has it up. I’m not going to embed the video, but here’s a link:
The quality may have been bad, but I think that was pretty awesome! I love the costume and the effects are really neat.
I hope I can post the real video soon. I don’t know what Marvel or Disney are waiting for…other than the fact that Ant-Man isn’t scheduled for release until 2015 or so. Maybe they want to wait before they start drumming up hype.
The Ant-Man Test Reel…Sort Of!
Remember that test reel of Ant-Man footage that director Edgar Wright filmed and then showed at San Diego Comic-Con? Of course you do. I know I remember, and I’m eagerly awaiting its public release. Well artist Samurai Jack (no relation…I think) saw it in San Diego and he decided to make his own animated version to share with all us fans! This looks pretty damn neat.
