Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/8/14

Welcome to my vacation, hencharinos! I get two weeks off a year, and right now I’m at the start of my second, luxuriating at home with zero responsibilities and 100 relaxation points. It’s great! I’m going to kick up my feet, read some good comics, play some video games and hopefully see Big Hero Six before too long. I hear it’s great!

Comics were a little light this week for some reason, and very DC heavy. We’ve got new issues of Gotham Academy and Axis, the latter of which is getting a little better. And Grayson is great and wins Comic Book of the Week!

Dick Grayson: Comics’ Mancake

You can also check out my review of Amazing Spider-Man #9 over at Word of the Nerd. It’s an excellent start to Spider-Verse proper, and I’m really looking forward to that story now.

Comic Reviews: Axis #4, Batman Eternal #31, Gotham Academy #2, and Grayson #4.

Bee and PuppyCat Returns, Making the Day Worth Enjoying!

If you’re not familiar with the Internet web cartoon Bee and PuppyCat, then take a few minutes out of your Friday to watch the first episode: Part 1 and Part 2. It’s an adorable, silly, kind of insane cartoon about a wacky girl and her pet puppycat. It’s made by Natasha Allegri, who worked on Adventure Time, so expect Bee and PuppyCat to be a lot like Adventure Time.

And that’s definitely not a bad thing. Bee and PuppyCat is weird and adorable in equal measure, which is the secret of its success.

Well after that first two-parter, Allegri and her team had to put the cartoon on the backburner to raise some money to make more, and possibly publish some comics. Whatever they were doing apparently worked, because we’ve got two new episodes to enjoy! The animation style is a little different, but it’s still the same cartoon we know, love and giggle at.

Enjoy!

I hope we can expect more Bee and PuppyCat in the near or far future.

I Hate to Be ‘That Guy’, But I Don’t Like the New Star Wars Title

It was revealed yesterday that principal filming is over for Star Wars: Episode VII, and with it we learned the title: Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I have no idea who comes up with this stuff.

So look, I hate to be ‘that guy’, that geek who can’t accept change or new ideas with his franchises, but I don’t like title. I’m sure it fits the movie fine, it’s just that I don’t like the word ‘Awakens’. It’s such an awkward word. I write crime stories for my local newspaper for a living, and sometimes I have to write about people being woken up by a crime, and the word ‘awakens’ is all manner of cumbersome and ungainly.

So there, I have a very good reason to dislike the new Star Wars title. Maybe George Lucas will now read my blog and change it!

Beyond that complaint, though, it’s probably fine. I mean, ‘Return of the Jedi’ would seem to imply that the Force was coming back. But I guess it meant ‘Jedi’ singular, as in just Luke.

Full Trailer for the Final Hobbit Movie: The Battle of the Five Armies

Eh. I can’t say as how I’m all that enthused about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. I suppose I’ve enjoyed the last two movies, and I’ll definitely see this one in theaters, but I just don’t have any energy for the franchise anymore. There’s nothing new in this trailer, nothing we haven’t seen dozens of times before from this franchise. The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was full of new sights, sounds and insanities. The Battle of the Five Armies is just more Middle Earth characters looking drastic.

Still, I’ll definitely see it, and maybe even enjoy it. Though they didn’t even bother to really name all five of the armies in the trailer…

The 5th of November Was Yesterday, But…

I love V for Vendetta the movie. I haven’t read the comic, and I’m sure it’s fine, but I love the movie! And Cinema Sins gives it a real thrashing!

And for once, I’m actually kind of pleased with their work. They still count sins for really minor things, but they did a great job this time pointing out flaws in logic, plot and story. Good job, team! And now I’m in the mood to watch V for Vendetta again…
