Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/4/25
Happy New Year, everyone! Here’s hoping 2025 isn’t as crappy as 2024, but I don’t have high hopes. We’re starting off a bit light this week with just a single comic read and reviewed. I read a few more, but this was the only one I felt like reviewing because it’s a good one!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Absolute Superman #3 for an unexpected, but no less delightful, take on a classic Superman trope.
Meanwhile, after many years, I finally, somewhat randomly started playing Stardew Valley. I’ve always considered the game, and when my brother mentioned in passing over Christmas that he was playing it again, I finally decided to give it a try. And, of course, it’s everything people say it is. The perfect chill accumulation game for a lazy weekend, just how I like it.

Welp, the world keeps spinning and we’ve reached the end of another year. It was a crap year full of mostly crap entertainment, and I’m coming up empty in terms of empathy and interest. Following the presidential election, I’m opting to be more cynical these days as a coping mechanism. This was also the year I took a back seat on posting all the time. This was a year.
In good news, I finally started my own original comic — Cover Bard — and am halfway done with the first issue. I need to make a big post about it. And the second volume of Gamer Girl & Vixen is complete and headed to the printers, to be distributed and available for sale early next year. So those were some good things that happened. We also had a ton of great TV shows, but not a lot of great movies or video games. It was a weird year.
But I like putting together a list like this, so join me after the jump for my favorite bits and pieces of pop culture from 2024! And feel free to share your own in the comments below.

We’ve known about Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man for a while now and here’s our first full trailer! Not just a teaser. Not just a couple of images. It’s a full trailer for this incoming animated series. I think it looks…fine.
Looks fine. They didn’t seem to want to tease a whole lot of stuff in this trailer, like villains or whatnot. And the animation feels stiff, much like the third season of What If…? And there have been half a dozen different Spider-Man cartoons over the past few years, all aimed at children, so what sets this one apart?
I’ll tell you what sets this one apart…it might feature the Slingers!
That’s a still from some comic-con and three of the four Slingers costumes are right up front! So clearly Peter Parker is going to go through multiple costumes (sans Ricochet, for some reason). What are the chances that those leftover costumes will eventually find their way to forming the Slingers?! A fool can dream.
Anyway, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is happening and it’s coming to Disney+ on Jan. 29, so pretty soon. Neato.

We’ve Been Gifted Happy Gilmore 2
Merry Christmas, everyone! I had a great time visiting family and getting gifts and having a nice day. Now it’s over and I’ve got to go back to work and just…you know how it is. But when I got home from visiting family last night, I discovered a gift that Netflix gave to all of us.
The first teaser trailer for Happy Gilmore 2.
Man, Adam Sandler seems so bored at the end of that trailer. Do you think that’s part of his character? Or does he just not want to make this movie? Whatever the case may be, Happy Gilmore 2 has happened and I’m definitely going to watch it!
Personally, I have zero problem with Adam Sandler’s quote unquote lazy moviemaking style, with his buddies. The only money he’s “wasting” is studio money, and to hell with the studios. Maybe he’ll make an entertaining movie. Maybe he won’t. It does not matter to me. Adam Sandler is awesome and I will gladly support any studio dumping money on him to keep doing his thing.
Also, kudos for bringing back Julie Bowen as the love interest, unlike most movies with decades-later sequels. Looking at you, Top Gun.
Happy Gilmore 2 comes to Netflix in July, I think.

It’s Christmas, Here’s a Unicorn Movie
It’s Christmas this week, on Wednesday specifically. I’m going home to spend time with family and exchange presents, as is the tradition. So I’m definitely going to be pretty lazy about updating this blog this week. So sue me!
But it’s Monday, and Mondays are good for movie trailers. Like this one for Death of a Unicorn from A24.
Looks silly and scary and all that good stuff. I love the parts of the trailer that are about normal people encountering a unicorn. And then it turns scary, because why not? That’s what good movies are all about.
Death of a Unicorn comes to theaters sometime in the spring.
