Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/8/23

Not much in the way of comics this week. In fact, there’s gonna be a bit of a comic review drought this whole month, I think. DC is starting some new event that I’m not interested in, and a look at the upcoming release calendar just doesn’t have a lot of my comics on it. Maybe I’ll try some new things. We’ll see.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Fantastic Four #9 for its fun use of Alicia Masters as the fifth Beatle.

Who doesn’t love the gag that Marvel Comics exist in the Marvel Universe?

Meanwhile, I think I’m nearing the end of Tears of the Kingdom, but I’m stretching it out as much as possible. I’m probably far from the end of Diablo 4, but we’ll see. It’s a good game, though probably not my cup of tea in the long run.

Comic Reviews: Fantastic Four #9 and X-Men #24.

Where There’s Mortal Kombat 1, There’s Smoke!

As I’ve surely mentioned many times on this blog, Smoke is my favorite character in Mortal Kombat, and one of my all-time favorite video game characters in general. The dude is just plain cool, and I have fond memories of reaching his stage in MK2 with my brother and cousin. It was an epic night of Toasties, I assure you.

Well, good news, everybody! Smoke will be a playable character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 game! We found this out in a new trailer showing off both Smoke and Rain!

Smoke looks cool, he plays cool, he gets to be the third wheel in the Sub-Zero/Scorpion team-up this game is going to have. As we all know, the plot of the new game is that the world has been remade by God King Liu Kang. Part of this new world has Sub-Zero and Scorpion as brothers in the Lin Kuei. That’s interesting.

Smoke’s bio got posted to the Mortal Kombat Discord.

A new and different origin, but nonetheless amazing! He’s not evil, he’s not some twisted robot. He’s a cool dude, with a cool backstory, and hopefully a fun part to play in the new game. Will he likely be killed and turned into a robot anyway? Yeah, possibly. It’s happened before, it could happen again. I’m just thrilled that my favorite Mortal Kombat character gets to come back and be awesome, at least for a little while.

6 Things I Want to See in Superman: Legacy

The world of comic book movie discussions is on fire with all the updates we get from James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. It’s maddening. Though it’s self-inflicted. If I just stopped visiting comic book movie news sites, I wouldn’t be so inundated. But those same news sites are what told me that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan had been cast as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively.

My Adventures with Superman starts this weekend

That’s neat. I don’t know anything about Corenswet and don’t know if I’ve seen him in anything, whereas I love Brosnahan in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and was hoping she’d get the part. She should be great! And I trust writer/director James Gunn in casting Corenswet. I’m sure he’ll be great. So what do I want from a new Superman movie? The Christopher Reeves movies were before my time and I have no real thoughts on them. I don’t care for Superman Returns. And I don’t care for Man of Steel. So what do I actually want?

Join me after the jump for six things I want to see in Superman: Legacy. And feel free to share your own hopes and dreams in the comments below.

Second Season of After Party, Baby!

After Party on AppleTV+ was my favorite show last year. It’s a murder mystery in which every episode explores a new suspect using a different genre, like action film, musical, cartoon and much more. And now there’s gonna be a second season and they’re gonna go wild with it!

A Wes Anderson episode?! Hells yes! I love Wes Anderson. Asteroid City was really good. And I’m excited for a second season of After Party. Will hopefully be another banger.

After Party season 2 comes out on July 12, which is really soon.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/1/23

Small week for comics this week, being the end of the month. It’s also been just one heck of a week for me. Ugh. I do not need to be paying this much to fix my car every couple of months…Anyway, we’ve got Green Arrow, for one thing.

Comic Book of the Week goes to She-Hulk #14 because this series has finally hit a groove I enjoy, after the first storyline left me in the dust.

I’ll follow you anywhere, handsome stranger

Meanwhile, everything else continues to shamble along. Still immersed in both Tears of the Kingdom and Diablo 4. Enjoying Secret Invasion. Didn’t care for the new Indiana Jones. Just kind of chugging along and trying not to go broke.

Comic Reviews: Green Arrow #3 and She-Hulk #14.
