Mimic to Return to Comics; All 6 Fans Rejoice!

So this is some comic news that will excite all half a dozen fans of The Mimic, myself included. The Mimic will appear in an upcoming storyline of X-Men: Legacy sometime in 2012.

Long thought lost and forgotten after his Dark X-Men appearance, the Mimic’s upcoming issues were announced by X-Men: Legacy writer Christos Gage in an Oct. 16 interview with iFanboy. X-Men: Legacy stars Rogue as a teacher to young mutants, and she has taken Wolverine’s side after X-Men: Schism. Here’s what Gage had to say:

In my second arc, we’ll see Mimic and Weapon Omega show up, and chances are good that at least one of them will be around for a while.

Exciting news! Mimic is one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. He has appeared in comics only a handful of times since his debut in the 1960s. So every little appearance is something to be celebrated. As I said, this news isn’t very interesting to anyone except Mimic fans. And this blog post is for them.

I’m not foolish enough to get my hopes up that Mimic will be the one of them sticking around for awhile.

Review: X-Men: Schism #5

And so the X-Men are split asunder! Destruction has come to Utopia, but a growing rift between Cyclops and Wolverine has brought the two long-time allies to blows! Who is right? Who is wrong? Can they put aside their differences in time to save the day? Can the X-Men as a family ever recover from that stinging comment about Jean Grey? Can the X-Men defeat one solitary Sentinel? The answer to a lot of those questions is ‘yes’. But as to whether or not the big X-Men split makes any legitimate sense, the answer is most definitely ‘no’.

X-Men: Schism #5

I am not ashamed to say that I completely agree with Cyclops on this one. Wolverine’s decision and his reasoning for breaking the X-Men in half fly in the face of decades of X-Men history! I just don’t buy it.

Comic rating: 3/5: Alright.

That’s not to say this wasn’t an enjoyable issue. The fight between Cyclops and Wolverine came to a great conclusion, and remained epic and brutal throughout. The day was saved in wonderful superhero fashion, and the debate between the two star characters was both respectful and intelligent. They didn’t just part ways flipping each other off, is what I’m saying. The years of respect and camaraderie remained between them, even as they went their separate ways. All in all, I’d definitely say that X-Men: Schism was a worthwhile story. There were some annoying parts, like everything with the new Hellfire Club or Idie, and the character rift wasn’t as clear until issue #4, but now that it’s complete, I think it’s a good story.

But Wolverine’s reasoning is just ridiculous! As much as I may have liked this issue, I had to bring it down a grade for how foolishly stupid and naive Wolverine seems, and how the titular split doesn’t make any sense. Spoilers and more after the jump.

The Jean Grey School for Higher Learning

Boy, Wolverine is really going to stick it to Cyclops in the upcoming Regenesis storyline. While Cyclops and his Uncanny X-Men stay behind on Utopia in San Francisco (I think), Wolverine is going to take his team of X-Men back to Westchester to rebuild the old Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Only Wolverine isn’t going to name it after Chuck. He’s got a much better name in mind.

The logo is not as nifty as an 'X'

Take that, Cyclops! Wolverine is going to honor your dead wife while you stay in California having sex with Emma Frost. Take that! I like the change. Professor X is still around, as far as I know, but the X-Men series has been great recently about moving forward and coming up with new ideas. There’s absolutely no reason to name the school after Charles Xavier anymore.

The war between Xavier and Magneto is long over. And for that I’m grateful. I wonder if it will now be replaced by the war between Cyclops and Wolverine!

The school looks pretty badass too.

It's probably going to be a bitch to draw, though.

Review: X-Men: Schism #4

Finally, the confrontation between Cyclops and Wolverine comes to the breaking point. Or is that the slashing/eye-blasting point? Not only is the rift between them clearly laid out and understandable, but the two heroes actually do come to blows at the climax of this issue. And it’s an awesome fight. X-Men: Schism #4 is an exciting and tense issue, one that thankfully is not bogged down by the ridiculousness of the Hellfire Club Kids. It’s just Cyclops and Wolverine laying it all on the line.

X-Men: Schism #4

And I am completely on Cyclops’ side.

Wolverine comes off like a fool! I understand his reasoning, and I suppose it fits with the character, but in the context of everything we know about the X-Men and in the context of what we’re reading here, Wolverine is a blind, stubborn fool. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like we’re made to root for Wolverine anymore. Both sides are pretty clear and neither one comes off as completely favored over the other. The reader can choose for themselves who is right, and also see that both Cyclops and Wolverine are being more than a little selfish. That’s a plus and definitely helps to better define the titular Schism of the X-Men.

Spoilers after the jump.
