How I Would Write the World of Warcraft Movie

The news that Legendary Pictures is trying again to move forward with a World of Warcraft movie fills me with nothing. Not excitement. Not boredom. Not even mild interest. They’ve been trying to get such a movie off the ground for years, and even Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was attached for the longest time.

But Hollywood being Hollywood, the development has gone nowhere. I don’t think I will ever fully understand why these movie-making companies can never just make the damn movies. But that’s also why I don’t want to work in Hollywood.

How is this not a movie yet?

For what it’s worth, some dude named Charles Leavitt has been brought on to write a new script. Apparently he’s written some other movies for Legendary before, and they like him. So la de da for him. I’m going to file the World of Warcraft movie in my ‘When Pigs Fly’ folder alongside the Halo movie. I never believe a movie is going to get made until production actually begins. It’s why I don’t usually write about this kind of news.

But then I got to thinking…how do you cram the entirety of the World of Warcraft franchise into a 2-hour movie? What would the story be? Who are the characters? Do you stick with established lore and continuity, or do you throw all of that away and write a totally new adventure?

Being both a huge fan of Warcraft and something of a creative person myself, I’ve decided to try my hand at the script for the World of Warcarft movie. One that sticks to the established story, but takes some liberties as well. Join me after the jump to see my idea!

A Sad Portal Video

Even though the weekend is upon this, my girlfriend found this cool/sad Portal 2 epilogue video. I think it’s all CGI, and beautiful CGI at that. Made by Ronald the Cock. Consider this a nice, relaxing song to see you into the weekend…

Also, using the same music is this amazing animated video showing the adventures of Doug Rattman, the Aperture scientist who worked behind the scenes of Portal and Portal 2 to aid Chell’s escape. This video is about what happens between the two games, and Rattman ensuring Chell’s survival. It might make more sense if you’re familiar with the storyline from the Portal games.

I thought I’d posted this before, but I couldn’t find it. Here it is to the tune of “Exile, Vilify” by The National.

Guess Who Has Come Out of Retirement

If out of all the infinite number of possible answers to this question, you guess my Skyrim character Tannenbaum, then gold star for you!

Tannenbaum the Orc, the warrior poet who retired after defeating the dragonlord and saving all of Skyrim, has once again donned his legendary armor and picked up his ax to join the Dawnguard, and destroy the accursed vampire race! Behold, your champion!

That’s him on the left, the sexy one

In all seriousness, though, I’m talking about the new DLC for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which just came out for the PC. It’s called Dawnguard, named after an ancient order of warriors who have dedicated themselves to killing vampires across Skyrim. I was a huge Skyrim fan back when it came out, logging in more than 140 hours across three different characters, mostly focusing on my warrior orc Tannenbaum. I made a few posts about him, sharing his adventures with all of you, but then I never got around to writing a full review. Probably because Skyrim is just so undefinable as a game. There’s just so much to encompass, and all of it so good.

Unfortunately, I lost all interest in the game after beating the final boss, and I moved on to other games. So Tannenbaum went into retirement. He never got married, but he is the richest orc in all the land. He bought the mansion in Solitude, while keeping the house in Whiterun to store all his junk. He’s a master blacksmith and a graduate of the Bard’s College. Plus there’s that whole saving the world thing, that’s pretty impressive. He’s an ally of the Blades and never gave in to the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood or the werewolves of the Companions.

And in the new DLC, I’m playing Tannenbaum as accepting the Dawnguard quests, instead of joining the vampire lords. I’ll maybe keep you all updated with how this works out. I’m also very interested in hearing about your own Skyrim experiences, if you’d like to share in the comments.

And the greatest thing about the DLC? We can finally make dragon bone weapons! I spent more than an hour last night crafting a new bow, a new short sword and a new ax for my hero. All evil beware the mighty Axannenbaum!

Truly fearsome.

Conan the Khajit Barbarian, or, Conan O’Brien vs. Skyrim

American Late Night host Conan O’Brien tries his hand at love, chickens and Skyrim, with hilarious consequences.

A Pac Attack!

Are you ready for another gritty, live action Pac-Man reboot? You should be! The guys at House of Gunsword have made a pretty good one, imagining Pac-Man as some kind of evil demon monster.

It’s a fair bit different from imagining Pac-Man as a wacky computer program though!
