My 6 Most Anticipated Comic Book Movies of 2013
Every year, it seems like more and more superhero movies are coming out. Can anyone even remember the cold, bitter years of the 90s, when we didn’t have this glorious glut of comic book films? Those were dark days indeed. But are we reaching some kind of superhero movie zenith? When are we going to reach the peak and then start coming down again? It’s going to happen someday, could it be 2013? Because there are enough superhero and comic book movies coming out this year that I was able to make a list! And can any of them even possibly live up to The Avengers or The Dark Knight trilogy?
Especially considering at least three of the films are almost direct sequels or pseudo-continuations?
When researching this list, I didn’t even know or remember that half of these films are even coming out this year. I try to stay abreast of such developments, but there are so many superhero movies being made or expected to be made that I just lose track. I can still remember when we marked our calendars to expect the next big comic book movie. Now I’m just going to relax and let them come as they will. I mean, we’re pretty set for new films and sequels for the next two to three years at least. For good or ill. But this year looks like it might have more winners than losers.
Superman Unbinds…and I Guess Brainiac is in There Too
The next DC Animated movie has been announced and it’s another Superman film. And they’ve given it another name that has absolutely nothing to do with the content. It’s called Superman: Unbound, and it’s going to adapt Geoff’ Johns’ Brainiac revamp from a few years ago.
But really? Superman: Unbound? What does that name have to do with anything? Why not just call it Superman: Brainiac or something that actually has to do with the movie? DC’s marketing people need to be dragged out into the street and shot.
Matt Bomer is going to voice Superman. I know him best as Bryce from Chuck, but he also stars in that show White Collar. Will he make a good Superman? Let’s hope so. John Noble, of Fringe, will be Brainiac, with Stana Katic as Lois Lane and Molly Quinn as Supergirl. You can learn more in this TV Guide article.
I never read the Geoff Johns’ story, but he had some neat ideas for Brainiac, as well as a great new visual. It looks like they’re going to carry that look into this movie. So I have hope that the adaptation will be interesting. I just really, really hate the name.
The Superman Movie We Really Want
Man of Steel is coming out next year, but I think this is the only Superman movie we need!
I love me some stop-motion LEGO movies. Sometimes I wonder if I could pull one off myself. I’ve got enough cool LEGOs. I’ve even got that Lex Luthor robot from the video! And the Batmobile. Once I found out LEGO was making an official Batmobile, I just had to buy it. No ifs, ands or buts. Brought to use by Counter 656.
It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a New Man of Steel Trailer
What better way to celebrate Assassin’s Creed Week than with a new Man of Steel trailer! Because this full trailer just came out today!
Now that’s one meaty movie trailer! I’m actually rather pleased to see that the next Superman movie isn’t just going to be an action/explosion fest. Looks like we might actually get some kind of deep exploration of Superman as a person and the responsibilities of his power. Call me a geek if you want, but that sounds fascinatingly fun! This trailer is definitely a winner.
Superman Gets Arrested
Looks like Superman might be spending some time in the hoosegow in next year’s Man of Steel.
He does know he can break out of those at any moment, right?
I kid, I kid, of course he knows. He just chooses not to, because he’s Superman. Did that just blow your mind? I both like and dislike this movie poster, for different reasons. I like it because it promises something new and interesting happening to Superman. Arrested by some army-looking dudes? Why? What for? And what is prompting Superman to let it happen? Of course he could bust free of a simple pair of handcuffs and escape these guys. But Superman chooses not to do so. And his reasons might make for an interesting Superman scene.
I hate it because it’s another movie poster that looks completely lifeless due to Photoshop. Why are all the soldiers washed out? Why is the light so awkward? I realize it’s to make the poster look ‘kewl’, but all it does is cloud the image and the importance. Ah well. At least I’m still looking forward to Man of Steel.
