Henchman-4-Hire’s New Year’s Resolutions
Hi everybody! Sean here, your Henchman-4-Hire! I’ve been having a blast writing this blog, and I’d like to think I’ve gathered a small group of friends and fans. Or maybe just people who accidentally set their homepage to my blog and don’t know how to fix it. All are welcome. I know I’m one of a jillion pop culture blogs on the Internet, but it’s still fun writing about topics that interest me like comics, video games and all that geeky stuff.
And Arkham City. That article on The 6 Best Easter Eggs of Batman: Arkham City was a gift that keeps on giving!
Clearly Batman is looking out for me.
So for my first post of the New Year, I thought I’d let you all in on some ideas and projects that I hope to start in the new year. Some site resolutions, if you will. First of all though, I was hoping to get some feedback from my readers. What do you guys and gals like about my blog? What do you hate? How are my reviews? Do you like the long form with full synopsis? Should I shorten them up? Am I just a blithering idiot in general?
Let me know in the comments so I can make some changes and improvements.
Here are my Henchman-4-Hire New Year’s Resolutions:
1. Get a New Logo: I don’t own the grinning guy in the green and yellow at the top of my blog, the one I’m sort of using as a logo. That’s a Marvel Comics character, named Bob: Agent of Hydra. It just so happens that he’s a henchman and that picture just looks perfect for the tone and scope of my blog. So I’m using it under the Fair Use rules of coypright law. I’m not making any money off the image or this blog. So I’m safe, I think.
Hopefully sometime this year I’ll be able to work with an artist or anyone really to design my own original Henchman-4-Hire character to use in place of Bob. I have some ideas, but I’m a terrible artist. If any of my readers would like to help me out in designing a new character and a new logo, contact me via e-mail. Or if you know someone who can do that sort of thing. Please get in touch with me. This site needs its own unique look!
2. Henchman Spotlight: This was a project I’ve wanted to do since the very beginning, a sort of detailed look at specific Henchmen from pop culture. It would include a biography, trivia, appearances, and other just fun stuff about each character. Sort of like the list of the 6 Greatest Henchmen of All Time, but more specific. I’d planned on doing it as a Henchman-of-the-Month, but that’s probably not going to happen. And I have no one to blame but procrastination. So hopefully soon I’ll put up the first one of these.
3. Guide to Henching: Another Henchman-related project. If you follow me on Twitter or have liked my Facebook page, then you’ve already seen me starting to roll out this idea. I’ve been writing up little Henchmen rules/trivia. It’s just a little game for now, but I hope to get a little more elaborate. Maybe write some ‘Official Rules of Henching’ or something. Like a guide book. Maybe even write enough to attract a publisher and get it published something. So those little factoids will continue, but on my blog itself I hope to write something more in depth and grand.
4. The Robin Manifesto: Frequent readers of my blog will know that I absolutely love Robin, The Boy Wonder. He’s one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. Unfortunately, he’s also the most maligned mainstream comic book character in the world! Everybody hates Robin! Nobody wants to see him in the movies. They mock him, they scoff at him. The guy gets no respect, I’m tellin’ ya.
Well that’s going to change. I have a lot of article ideas in mind to tell the world about the awesomeness of Robin. I’m going to make it a project, with new articles published as often as I can write them. Why do I think Robin is so cool. Why would Robin be a perfect fit in the Christopher Nolan movies. Why does Batman not understand the importance of Robin. Why do some Robins succeed and some Robins fail. Those are just a couple of ideas. Maybe then I’ll be able to make the world understand!
5. Stop Drinking Soda: This is actually my personal New Year’s Resolution. Usually my resolution is to lose weight, but that’s never worked. This one might be a little easier to accomplish. Plus it will lead into losing weight. So wish me luck!
Review: Teen Titans #4
While showing a definite and more grounded improvement over the last issue, Teen Titans #4 still feels off when it comes to teen dialogue and interaction. A lot happens in this issue – from the team getting together and getting a name, to finally confronting Superboy – but it’s not all gelling as well as I’d like. Or ‘gellin’ like Magellan’ if that’s how you roll. At any rate, I can definitely appreciate what writer Scott Lobdell does in this issue because I definitely want to see a lot more of these teens just hanging out and getting to know one another. But I can’t really put my finger on why that doesn’t quite work.
Maybe it’s because everything feels so rushed and kind of sloppy.
Comic rating: 3/5: Alright.
Or maybe everything just feels forced. The same issues that have plagued this series continue here, but the specific actions and story points make up for that flakiness. N.O.W.H.E.R.E. continues to be a silly concept. The setting always seems very erratic. And this group of characters has yet to fully blend together, or feel anything other than forced together. I don’t think Lobdell found a very organic way to bring the team together. I don’t know if he came up with the members of the team, or if they were decided in some New 52 committee, but it’s like he had a list of characters he had to bring together and he just checked them off the list to ensure they were together by issue #4.
I just don’t get the feeling that this team is the team that belongs together, that this will be the Teen Titans of the new generation. But there’s still time to change my mind. The art, at least, remains phenomenal. Brett Booth is drawing beautiful, distinctive characters with great facial expressions and energetic movements. So at least good.
Spoilers after the jump.
Robin Will Be Appearing in Dark Knight Rises
Sort of.
At least in Easter Egg form.
The first full trailer for the third and final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies was posted online yesterday. And even though Nolan has repeatedly said that Robin will not be appearing in his films, did everyone happen to catch this brief bit during the football game scene in the trailer?
Word on the Internet has it that fans were told to bring their own signs, so kudos to the fan holding that letter ‘R’. But even still, Nolan is the director and editor. So he or someone high up edited this trailer and cut and spliced the movie together. Someone has left this ‘R’ in the film and there is no way they couldn’t see it. You see it, right?
If not, check out the Robin logo:
Clever girl.
Robin’s Pixie Boots May be Gone for Good!
I’m a little ashamed at myself that it’s taken this long to notice, but based on what we’ve seen so far in the new DC reboot, it looks like they have completely retconned Robin’s original costume out of continuity! No more pixie boots, no more little green trunks and especially no more horribly outdated costume! This is fantastic news! If true.
Everybody is familiar with the original Robin costume thanks to the 1960s TV show with Burt Ward. The costume is almost as iconic as Batman’s costume. The red shirt, the yellow cape, the green pixie boots and trunks, and the very bare legs. The costume debuted in 1940, back when ‘laughing boy daredevils’ were common in comics. It’s a product of its time, based on Robin Hood, the Robin redbreast and the uniform of a circus acrobat. The problem is that the costume was so iconic that Robin wore it all the way into the 1980s, when the character of Dick Grayson aged from an 8-year-old boy to a man in his late teens/early 20s.
Sure it was comics, but if you consider the real world implications, he would have had some very hairy legs.
And it wasn’t just the original Robin, Dick Grayson, who wore that costume. The second Robin, Jason Todd, was given the exact same costume. He was younger, but still. It wasn’t until the third Robin in the 1990s that the concept of ‘pants’ finally dawned on DC Comics.
And Robin has had pants ever since, including in movies and cartoon shows.
Which brings us to the recent DC Comics reboot. For those unfamiliar with it, back in September, DC reset/rebooted/revamped all of its characters and started over with new #1 issues. They essentially wiped the slate clean of all past stories and history, recreating it with bits and pieces into a more streamlined variation. Everything is sort of the same, just tweaked and altered to better suit a more accessible comic. It’s like when they make a Batman movie and alter certain things from the comics to make the movie version more palpable.
One thing that’s stayed the same is that all of the Robins are still around. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, the 90s Robin, Tim Drake, and the current Robin, Damian Wayne. They didn’t change all that much in the reboot. With the exception of the current Robin, the first three have all grown up and moved on to their own costumed identities.
Well in November, the latest issues of their comics revealed in flashback that Dick Grayson and Jason Todd did not wear the pixie boot, bare-legged Robin costume! No official word has been given about the change in history, but I think the pictures speak for themselves.
First, Dick Grayson (now known as Nightwing) underwent a psychic assault and had a flashback to this one picture:
Clearly you can see that Robin is wearing pants, from the wrinkles on the legs, and those are definitely boots. Unfortunately, no context is given for that flashback. We can only assume that it’s Dick Grayson’s Robin. He gives no indication that he would be thinking about letting some other Robin fall, like Jason or Tim. So I think he’s flashing back to a time when he fell. I think it’s safe to say that is Dick Grayson in the Robin costume in that mental flashback.
And then we have Jason Todd, now calling himself the Red Hood. He stars in his own book, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and the team had some flashbacks in their third issue as well. First, the cover shows Red Hood battling his former self, and right away the costume is very clearly not the bare-legged one.
I first noted this change when this cover was first publicized several months ago, but I didn’t truly understand the implications until now. That’s why I’m a little ashamed at myself. But clearly we can see that Jason Todd did not wear that original Robin costume when he served as Batman’s sidekick. He had a very updated, very angular, very modern look to his costume. Frankly, I love it.
Here are a few more panels from the flashback:
So that’s my evidence and I think it’s pretty clear. The old Robin costume with those horrible pixie boots is a thing of the past. It makes sense, since this reboot is supposed to line up all of the heroes with the modern times. And there’s no way Batman of the 2000s would dress a kid up in that sort of old-fashioned costume. Yes, he’d still send a kid out to fight crime. But that’s the subject of a different article.
As a long-time Robin fan, I say good riddance. The original Robin costume may be a classic, but it has always been silly and has only hurt the character in the long run. DC made the right idea in nixing the old costume from continuity. Robin has a hard enough time appealing to modern audiences. So kudos to DC.
This reboot is finally paying off.
My Greatest Regret is Never Finishing Lego Batman
I don’t know why I never finished that game. It was custom made for me to enjoy: Legos, Batman and a fully playable Robin! Was I insane? Did I have something wrong with me? Hell, I already owned the Lego Batmobile set. It’s sitting on my DVD shelf right now. I didn’t even buy Lego Batman the game myself, I got it for Christmas! And it was a brilliant Christmas present! Yet for some foolish reason or anything, I barely touched that game and eventually traded it in for another game.
Well the universe has decided to give me a chance to make amends. The sequel, Lego Batman 2: Super Heroes, was announced Monday.
Or at least someone uncovered this teaser image:
That’s pretty cool news. New Batman video games are always fun. I absolutely loved the Lego Sar Wars games when I played them, yet for some reason I never got into Lego Batman, Lego Harry Potter or Lego Indiana Jones. They’re an absolute blast to play! Little Lego characters running around a Lego world, collecting bricks and building items. It’s adorable. And again, fully playable Robin! That game should have been my Holy Grail. But alas, it couldn’t hold my interest.
Possibly because there were no Lego lightsabers in the Batman game.
So a sequel should be fun. Batman and Superman teaming up, along with Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and who knows who else (Robin?). Hopefully this time they’ll make it online co-op. Maybe that will be the key.
