Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/17/22
Good news, everybody! I have for sure survived my bout with COVID-19. It’s been a terrible two weeks, but I’m down to just the smallest of head congestion symptoms now. Suffice to say, it was pretty crappy having COVID. And just my luck to get it long after the pandemic has settled down around the world.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Dark Spaces: Wildfire #3 for another excellent part of this creative heist tale.
Meanwhile, I’m on the verge of buying Temtem, the knock-off Pokemon game that finally had its full release this month. The game looks tempting, but the knock-off nature is a little unappealing. But then I’ve got no other games coming out until the end of October, and even then I’ll need to finally buy a Playstation 5. So I’m just not sure what to do!
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #9, Dark Spaces: Wildfire #3, Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #5 and Jurassic League #5.

What a gorram week. It was my birthday this past Tuesday, and what did I get? A real nasty cold! The worst cold I’ve had in years. Was it COVID? I don’t know, because I don’t have any at-home tests lying around, and I barely left my apartment. Just went out to get stronger meds and didn’t find any tests at the drug store. Ugh.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 for a truly exceptional issue that works on multiple levels, while keeping the focus squarely on Steve Rogers the man.
Meanwhile, ugh, this cold really sucked! I didn’t do much else. I watched Paper Girls on Amazon Prime and that was a let down. It was like an early 2000s Nickelodeon attempt to do Paper Girls, with no real budget. The Sandman was great on Netflix. And Total War: Warhammer 3 is living up to the years of hype. So other than the cold, I’m good.
Comic Reviews: Batman #127, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 and She-Hulk #6.

Happy Birthday to me! Not yet, of course. It won’t be until Tuesday — and I’ve got a big announcement to make! — but this is the comics review column ahead of my birthday, so why not say something? Life is fun that way. And comics were fun this week! Including the launch of a new Thunderbolts and another great issue of The Variants.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Ant-Man #2 for how much fun this anniversary series has been, really reaching back into the past and capturing the era-specific magic of guys like Eric O’Grady in his heyday.
Meanwhile, I’m deep into Total War: Warhammer 3 these days, loving the new factions and the giant map. Glad to finally be playing Immortal Empires! I’ve also gotten around to watching Paper Girls on Amazon Prime and it is a real letdown. It feels like an early 2000s Nickelodeon take on the material.
Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #2, Thunderbolts #1 and The Variants #3.

It’s just gonna be one of those weeks, I guess. I think I’m just reading fewer comics these days. I don’t have any particular reason. I just don’t care for Big Event comics anymore, and I really need to get into more indie stuff. I’ve only got Amazing Spider-Man this week on my pull list.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Amazing Spider-Man #8 for a solid issue and the introduction of the new Spider-Gear.
Meanwhile, I’m loving She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, absolutely loved the third season of The Boys, not particularly digging A League of Their Own, and I’m finally gonna try out Total War: Warhammer III this weekend because the Immortal Empires campaign has launched! Should be fun.
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #8.

Quiet week in comics for me because I’m avoiding the major summer events from Marvel and DC. I really should use this time to branch out into more independent comics…but I’m a lazy, lazy man, my good readers. At least we got a new issue of Nightwing.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2 for an excellent continuation of this random new series. So I do read some independent comics!
Meanwhile, I loved the first issue of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and I’m definitely looking forward to more! Should be a great show! I also loved Prey and enjoyed Day Shift, though there were plenty of plotholes in the latter. And in the week ahead, I’m looking forward to the new Saint’s Row revival. So plenty going on!
Comic Reviews: Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2 and Nightwing #95.
