My 6 New Year’s Resolutions for 2013

My New Year’s Resolution for 2012 was to stop drinking soda. I lasted about two or three weeks before accidentally forgetting while at a basketball game and having a bottle of sweet, sweet Mountain Dew. It was all downhill from there…until I had a checkup in the hospital in September and found I had high blood pressure. After that, I managed to kick the soda and I haven’t had a drop since! So it took a few months, but I managed to fulfill my New Year’s Resolution!

So what about this year?

Babies in top hats are always fun

I know that 2013 is going to be a very good year. I think, if we all put our minds to it, we can totally make it so! And what better way to celebrate 2013 than ensuring that my resolutions succeed! Here are my 6 New Year’s Resolutions for 2013!

6 Awesome Things I Got for Christmas

I love Christmas. And with my family, it’s especially wonderful. Both my immediate and extended family all get together down on our grandparents’ farm and everybody exchanges gifts. We have a big Christmas dinner with delicious food and great desserts. And everybody gets along. Forget what you see in movies or TV where everybody’s drunk or mad at each other. That’s not my family, not on Christmas. Everybody gets along, everybody has a great time, and it’s been that way since I was a wee little henchman.

I also always get awesome presents!

My wrapping skills are not that good

Not that Christmas is just about getting presents. I also really splurge on gifts for others too. I’m not a cash/gift card kind of guy. So even for my distant aunts, uncles and cousins that I don’t see very often, I’ll buy them something cool. Because if they wanted money, I could just loan them money. Christmas is the one time of the year when you go out of your way to buy something nice for the people you love. Here’s a list of the six most awesome things I got for Christmas this year.

Evil-ution by Moffat – But They Forgot Cable Service Providers

Stephen Moffat is a Doctor Who genius.

Lovely Doctor Who art by Travis the Geek.

So jeez, you guys, this was a crummy weekend. So I’m on vacation, right, but on the very first night of my vacation, my Internet craps out. Just up and dies on me. Twice I get on the phone with my cable provider’s technical support, and twice they ‘fix’ it, only for it to go out again! They said there were no outages in my area. But that meant I lost my Friday night of hanging out and being my usual Internet-friendly self.

Saturday comes along, and it’s working fine in the morning. I got my Hench-sized reviews up, and all is hunky dory – though mostly I think it’s this way because I went out and bought a fancy new router, thinking that was the problem. But no sooner does my girlfriend sign online Saturday afternoon then the Internet craps out again! And stays out all Saturday night, with spurts of connectivity. My girlfriend, being the trooper she is, stays online on her end, only to get a few minutes of windows to chat with me. Anyway, I know it’s not the router, so I think it’s the modem…but it was late on a Saturday night, and the local cable office isn’t going to open until Monday morning to give me a new modem.

So I rush out the door, intent on buying a new modem at the store for $100. I’m marching to my car when I just happen to pass my downstairs neighbor coming home. I quickly mention my problem, and he says he has the exact same problem!

Two smart blokes like us quickly realize that the problem is on the end of the cable provider. Even though all of my modem’s green lights are working fine, it’s clearly their fault – and this thankfully saves me $100.  But that didn’t fix my Internet.

Seriously, no sooner does my vacation start than my Internet crumbles. Fortunately, it came back Sunday morning and has been back ever since. But come on! How is that timing not a little suspect?

My 6 Childhood Heroes

I love being a child of the 80s. And consider this said with rose-colored glasses, but we had some awesome cartoons growing up. Granted, now as an adult I know they were all glorified toy commercials, but they were just amazing when I was a kid! Transformers, G.I. Joe, the Teenage Mutant Ninja  Turtles! There’s just no denying that my generation had it made.

And considering my life now, with the nerd blog, a love of comics and an action figure collection, I think it’s safe to say those early cartoons and TV shows definitely started me down this road of geekery.

Behold greatness!

So let’s play everyone’s favorite game from those old shows and ask: who’s your favorite? You all know you have a favorite. Who’s your favorite Thundercat? Who’s your favorite G.I. Joe? And the big one: who’s your favorite Ninja Turtle? Join me after the jump to see my answers to those life-defining questions from my childhood, and find out who my favorite pop culture heroes were when I was a little kid – and I’d love to hear yours in the comments.

I Am A Cupcake Sorcerer!

Behold, my mighty cupcake creations!

Om nom nom nom

That’s my friend’s young son Jackson chowing down on the hamburger cupcakes that I made! I brought them home for Labor Day with my family and friends. They’re neat little suckers, and they were rather tasty. I’ve always enjoyed baking – mostly for the treats that come out as a result – and this was a fun project I wanted to pull off and share with people.

You can make them too if you follow these easy instructions! I was able to buy everything I need at the local Wal-Mart.
