Amazing Spider-Man Looks Amazing
I have good news for all Spider-Man video game fans. Based on the trailers that debuted for the Amazing Spider-Man movie tie-in game this weekend, it looks like everyone’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is going back to his sandbox, open world web-swinging style! The past two Spidey games, Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time, back-tracked to more focused, straight-forward, confined swinging. The last game, which I didn’t play, apparently even stuck players indoors. Lame!
Everybody knows that the best Spider-Man video game ever was Spider-Man 2, the game that introduced the idea of an open world Manhattan and a Spider-Man who could web-swing from building to building, just like the real Spidey. And that was also a movie tie-in game, so there’s a lot of hope for this game – if not the movie as well.
Too bad it looks like he’s focusing on fighting giant robots for some reason.
First, a teaser trailer with some game move:
And then there was a longer, story-based trailer:
Looking damn good!
How X-Men: First Class Should Have Ended
If you’re like me, then you know all about the ‘How It Should Have Ended’ cartoon series on Youtube. The name is self-explanatory, and these guys have done it for a ton of movies, mostly superhero movies. X-Men: First Class is the latest cartoon, and it’s fantastic and funny! So consider this your introduction to the awesome world of these cartoons!
I Feel Bad for Alfred Enoch
I finally watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 over the weekend. They were great. As good as all the rest of the Harry Potter movies. There were some scenes that didn’t live up to the awesomeness of the book – like Molly Weasley’s big moment, and Neville killing the snake – and I wish they’d given Snape a better death. But overall, they were great movies and a fine finale to the Harry Potter saga.
I just feel really bad for Alfred Enoch, the actor who played Dean Thomas.
Find out why after the jump.
Brave? More Like Lame, amiright, Folks?
Now that I’ve made peace with the death of my favorite comic book character, let’s move on to some other kinds of posts. The full trailer for Pixar’s next movie Brave came out while I was grieving. I was excited, because I liked the teaser trailer, but this full trailer leaves a lot to be desired. Take a look:
I gotta say, I’m disappointed. Not by the visuals, of course, they look stunning, but by the proposed story. Pixar is supposed to make these great, wonderful and creative films. A world of talking cars. Robot love in the future. Toys that come to life. But what’s this story? Strong, independent woman overcome’s society’s restrictions? We’ve seen that story a million times before! Women are always proving themselves in these types of movies. I think it’s a pretty safe guess that Brave, or whatever her name is, will easily rise above her society’s unfair gender laws and win the day. Possibly killing a monster bear in the process.
So I’m just not as impressed as I’d hoped to be with the Brave trailer. There’s a little too much slapstick comedy.
Frankly, I’m pretty sure the men and women at Pixar started with the poofy red hair and worked their way backwards.
When Fairy Tales Became the New Hollywood
I’m not entirely sure how this started, but Hollywood is absolutely in love with making gritty, realistic versions of fairy tales and other fantasy stories. There was that Red Riding Hood movie a few years ago, but I never saw it. I don’t think it even succeeded at the box office. I know the Alice in Wonderland movie did well, but that was relying on 3D and Johnny Depp-style, not really the gritty retelling. So what is possibly driving these movies? Did someone have an idea and now they just can’t stop the momentum?
First up, we have Snow White and the Huntsman:
So…uh…what?
Snow White re-imagined as some kind of epic war movie? Snow White was definitely wearing armor and wielding a sword at one point. And clearly the Huntsman is supposed to be some kind of action hero now. What did he do in the original fairy tale? Just wussed out on killing Snow White, right? I gotta say, that looked kinda badass. Who doesn’t love a good sword and sorcery tale? And if you can cling to a known entity like ‘Snow White’, why the hell not?
I can understand the ‘why’, I’m just not sure I understand the hopes of success. When she wasn’t in armor, Snow White seemed to do a lot of wandering around some random forest. And I’m pretty sure the love story aspect is written in stone. So…I guess grit and badassery are all its got going for it.
Because they sure as hell downplayed the Seven Dwarves! They were barely in one frame of that trailer at the 1:13 mark! That’s the real travesty.
Another new movie coming out in Neverland, a prequel to Peter Pan:
If you didn’t notice Anthony Hopkins in the trailer, he plays Smee. So I believe that means we can consider this a prequel to Hook.
Everybody loves prequels, right? They’re still very popular. The origins of Captain Hook and Peter Pan could be a nifty idea. I suppose all those hundreds of other Peter Pan stories left us wondering where Neverland and everybody came from, right? Because it’s always a good idea to reveal the secrets and mysteries of magical and mysterious things. Pulling back the curtain was the best thing that ever happened to the Wizard of Oz.
As is the case with most trailers, those two actually make the movies look good. Trailers are an art form these days, and I’m definitely falling for those two. But I just can’t help but feel that they’re not going to be very good movies. What do you all think?
Also, I’m pretty sure there are a half-dozen other Snow White and Peter Pan movies coming out alongside these two…
