Movie Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Do you know what the best part about being an adult Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan is in this day and age? A bunch of other adults who grew up on the ’80s cartoon are now in charge of making the new material! That love for the franchise and the four pizza-eating turtle brothers shines through in their new live action movie, Out of the Shadows. And it’s that same love that put me in the theater this weekend to enjoy another exciting film!

Movie Rating: 7/10 – Good.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t high art or well-constructed cinema. This isn’t a movie that particularly cares about logic. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a movie that only really cares about having as much fun as possible with the Ninja Turtles and their wonderful supporting cast. There are more contrivances and plot cheats than a Game Genie, but not even they could defeat the overwhelming sense of giddy energy that fuels this movie.

Plus, honestly, this was definitely a movie for kids, who aren’t going to care as much about plot contrivances as a punk frog like me. Out of the Shadows accomplishes exactly what it needs to: create a fun and enjoyable summer flick that doesn’t outstay its welcome or get bogged down in sewer garbage.

It’s a great time to be a Ninja Turtles fan! And expect FULL SPOILERS for the movie below!

Double-Dose of Turtle Trouble!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows debuts this weekend, and I’ll get around to seeing it eventually. I enjoyed the first movie, for what it was, and I’m hoping this sequel has the same level of energy and general fun. At the very least, it’s brought out the usual assortment of Ninja Turtles Internet videos.

Thank you, Cinema Sins and Screen Junkies, for your continued entertainment value. Secret of the Ooze was my jam when I was a kid! Not sure about that other thing though…

I Think I Like These More Than Cinema Sins

Recently, a hero at Shesellssheshells has started sinning the Cinema Sins videos! He throws shade at the weak sauce critiques that Cinema Sins has been putting down, as the kids are known to say. He has now torn apart Everything Wrong With Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s fun!

Though I’d come up with a better name than ‘Shesellssheshells’. I’m not even sure I’m spelling that right…

If This 5 Minute Trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence Doesn’t Get You Excited For the Movie, Nothing Will!

I know it worked on me. I guess I might actually see it in theaters now.

The nostalgia is strong with this one. And hey, if we’re lucky, Independence Day: Resurgence might actually be good. We have to hope. And in that hope, maybe we’ll get an OK movie experience. The movie comes out on June 23.

Thor: Ragnarok Puts Its Foot Down!

The first details of Thor 3: Ragnarok were unveiled today, with Marvel dropping both a cast list and this sweet concept art. The new cast members and characters sound very, very promising.

Lookin’ pretty badass

We’ve got Cate Blanchett playing Hela, the Norse goddess of the Underworld. Jeff Goldblum, of all people, is joining as the Grandmaster, which is a very interesting choice. He’s like The Collector from Guardians of the Galaxy, one of those oddball cosmic Marvel characters. Not sure what this means for the MCU.

Tessa Thompson will be the superhero Valkyrie, which is awesome. And the biggest news is that Karl Urban will be Skurge the Executioner! Hells yes! Now that is some casting and character I can get behind!

Good things happen when you’ve got Skurge and Hela in a Thor story together. Gjallerbru is the #1 thing I’ve wanted to see in the solo Avengers sequels since at least 2012! Surely Marvel’s going to make it happen. How could they not?

I’m still not sold on the Hulk being in this movie, but whatevs. I have nothing but absolute faith in the Marvel Movie Machine, and Thor: Ragnarok already sounds promising. It’s going to hit theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
