Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/8/23

Not much in the way of comics this week. In fact, there’s gonna be a bit of a comic review drought this whole month, I think. DC is starting some new event that I’m not interested in, and a look at the upcoming release calendar just doesn’t have a lot of my comics on it. Maybe I’ll try some new things. We’ll see.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Fantastic Four #9 for its fun use of Alicia Masters as the fifth Beatle.

Who doesn’t love the gag that Marvel Comics exist in the Marvel Universe?

Meanwhile, I think I’m nearing the end of Tears of the Kingdom, but I’m stretching it out as much as possible. I’m probably far from the end of Diablo 4, but we’ll see. It’s a good game, though probably not my cup of tea in the long run.

Comic Reviews: Fantastic Four #9 and X-Men #24.

Small week for comics this week, being the end of the month. It’s also been just one heck of a week for me. Ugh. I do not need to be paying this much to fix my car every couple of months…Anyway, we’ve got Green Arrow, for one thing.

Comic Book of the Week goes to She-Hulk #14 because this series has finally hit a groove I enjoy, after the first storyline left me in the dust.

I’ll follow you anywhere, handsome stranger

Meanwhile, everything else continues to shamble along. Still immersed in both Tears of the Kingdom and Diablo 4. Enjoying Secret Invasion. Didn’t care for the new Indiana Jones. Just kind of chugging along and trying not to go broke.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/24/23

Oh what a week, what a week. Can it really be possible that some of my current favorite comics are all coming out in the same week?! Do we really have new issues of Power Rangers and Superman in the same week?! I must be in comic book heaven.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Nightwing #105 for an artistic achievement that should be praised for all time. Kudos to Bruno Redondo and the entire creative team for this masterpiece!

Take it all in

Meanwhile, I’ve taken a slight break from Tears of the Kingdom to play some Diablo 4! I’ve been playing the Diablo games since the very beginning, though I’ve never engaged in the postgame stuff. I just play the story and try out different classes. It’s fun. I also saw the first episode of Secret Invasion but wasn’t all that impressed. The pacing and tension felt off. Hopefully I’ll like it more as it goes along.

Also, in terms of comics, I’ve decided to stop reviewing Saga because I don’t think I should be giving my thoughts on each individual issue in isolation. I enjoyed the Scarlet Witch annual, but I tend not to review annuals for no particular reason. And the first issue of Ultimate Invasion was solid, though we’ll see if this revival is worth a damn in due time.

Comic Reviews: Avengers #2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #109, Nightwing #105, Superman #5 and Titans #2.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/17/23

Fun week in comics for me this week. We’ve got a pair of new issues, and that’s always a hoot. But we’ve also got the second issue of Green Lantern. So it’s one of those weeks.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Void Rivals #1 for a pretty much perfectly structured and told first issue, which sufficiently teases whatever this new Energon Universe is going to be.

Give it a shot

Meanwhile, I’ve taken a pause from Tears of the Kingdom to try out Diablo 4 with some friends of mine, and it’s been a fine choice. I love the Diablo games and this one is just as fun as the others. I also watched and enjoyed The Flash movie, so come back on Wednesday for my review/thoughts.

Couple of Fun New Comics This Fall: Avengers Inc. and Birds of Prey

Every so often, I remember that I’m not just a movie trailer guy, I’m also a comic book guy! And two new comics were the talk of the town last week, so I felt like sharing them here as well. I will definitely check out both of these new series when they debut later this year.

First up is a new Birds of Prey at DC Comics, from writer Kelly Thompson and artist Leonardo Romero.

Thompson spent all last week teasing her team lineup, and it’s pretty solid. Pretty much who you would expect. The only wildcard choice, in my opinion, is Zealot, but only because I don’t know anything about the character. I probably couldn’t even name which comic she’s from. There are also some other characters who have yet to be revealed.

Birds of Prey will come out on Sept. 5, which is the day before my birthday. Make note of that.

Then from Marvel we’ve got Avengers Inc., which is going to be a private eye series about the Wasp, from writer Al Ewing and artist Leonard Kirk.

Al Ewing was the one who wrote the recent Ant-Man and Wasp anniversary mini-series, both of which were great. He set up a lot with Janet Van Dyne in that series, enough that she demanded more attention. So this is the chance! They’re teaming her up with Victor Shade, some former version of the Vision? I dunno. Before my time. But I’m definitely on board for Ewing doing something fun with the Wasp.

Avengers Inc. hits the stands on Sept. 13.
