Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/5/19

I didn’t care for Joker. It’s not my cup of tea. It’s a dark, brooding, severely misanthropic movie that, while well-made and well-acted, is just too bleak for my tastes. If you enjoyed it, more power to you.

Fortunately, we had some truly stellar comics this week! There were some really great turns in Lois Lane, Runaways and The Green Lantern, while Fantastic Four severely disappointed. I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to House of X #6 for a truly joyous party issue! That sort of fun counts for a lot with me.

XMen Party 01

Jubilee is in her element

Meanwhile, I’ve dropped Future Foundation now that Marvel has announced a nigh immediate cancellation. Can’t say I’m particularly sad, as I was only lukewarm about the series so far. I just hope Marvel sticks Jeremy Whitley on a character or characters with some actual staying power.

Comic Reviews: Batman #80, Fantastic Four #15, The Green Lantern #12, House of X #6, Lois Lane #4 and Runaways #25.

The 6 Bestest Jesters in Comics

The Joker movie comes out this weekend! But there’s a problem: I already did a List of Six about comic book clowns who aren’t the Joker. So what am I supposed to do now? How about the next best thing to clowns: jesters! Sure enough, there are a bunch of comic book jesters!

Jester List 01

Sad crying clown; no iron lung

Were jesters real? Does anybody know? Obviously they exist in pop culture depictions of castles and kingdoms. But were they historically real? That sounds like a really fun Wiki Wormhole. Anyway, there are a bunch of jester-themed comic book characters, so let’s count them down in celebration of the Joker!

Join me after the jump for the six best jesters in comics!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/28/19

Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Marvel and SONY made a deal to co-produce one more Spidey MCU film, with at least one more cameo in another movie! How exciting. I had faith that the studios would work something out, and there’s still time to work even more out beyond this new 2021 film.

As for comics, not a big pile this week, with only Captain America, Powers of X and Power Rangers. I skipped the new Strikeforce comic, though maybe I should have checked it out to try something by Tini Howard. Comic Book of the Week goes to a stellar Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!

Rangers vs Dayne 01

Ass-kicking incoming

Meanwhile, Harleen, the first part of the new Harley Quinn origin retelling by Stjepan Šejić has come out, and I was going to pick it up to review…but then I saw it was a double-sized book, and was pretty dense. So I’ve decided to wait and probably get it via tpb down the line. I am a big Stjepan Šejić fan and highly recommend Sunstone to anyone and everyone. Best love story I have ever read!

Comic Reviews: Captain America #14, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #43 and Powers of X #5.

6 Spider-themed Heroes and Villains (Other Than Spider-Man)

Spiders are awesome! I know they can be terrifying, but they’re mostly in the world to help in humanity’s never ending war against the insects. So it makes sense that the greatest superhero of all time is Spider-Man!

Spider Character List 01

Best Spider-Man movie ever? Yes.

But why let a perfectly good comic book character theme go to waste in a single character? Just because Spider-Man is so well known does not mean there can’t be other characters based off of spiders. Heck, Spider-Man has so many clones, off-shoots and hangers-on that I could make this list several times over based just on his friends, allies and enemies! That’s why I have challenged myself to come up with a list of spider characters who are not connected to Spider-Man! I am including the various Spider-Women from Marvel in this restriction as well, because that would also make it too easy.

So join me after the jump for a bunch of other comic book characters fashioned after spiders, characters who have very little link to Spider-Man!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/21/19

Are you ready for some comics? I’m ready for some comics! We’ve got Batman! We’ve got another crazy House of X! We’ve got some awesome Jimmy Olsen and Valkyrie!

This is also the week that J.J. Abrams’ Spider-Man debuted! And I was thoroughly whelmed! Comic Book of the Week instead goes to the latest issue of Tony Stark – Iron Man for a truly wondrous issue. This is a damn good workhorse comic. It’s not really reinventing the wheel, but is instead just telling damn good, worthwhile, interesting stories.

Iron Man Machine Man 01

The team up we never knew we wanted

Meanwhile, it was another fine issue of Absolute Carnage. Good event so far! Double meanwhile, I’m skipping Magnificent Ms. Marvel this week. This issue is better than the ones before because it focuses a lot on Kamala’s home life (while bringing back some villains who matter), but I still think the magic is gone. I’ll keep following that comic now and then.

Comic Reviews: Batman #79, House of X #5, Jimmy Olsen #3, Spider-Man #1, Tony Stark – Iron Man #16 and Valkyrie #3.
