The Top 6 Snow and Ice-Themed Comic Book Characters

Winter is upon us here in Central New York. I should know, I spend almost every morning having to scrape the frost off my car. Sometimes it’s even on the inside of my windows. But that’s probably something wrong with my car. Regardless, we’re talking winter, people. Snow, ice, freezing cold, big coats, fuzzy hats, icicles, popsicles and the deep chill of the frozen white.

So why not warm up by talking about some wintery superheroes?

Ice 06

If you’re at all familiar with this blog, you know I love talking about superheroes. That’s the fun of being a comic book geek. Cold-based powers are a popular choice when it comes to designing a superhero or a super-villain. Creating ice, throwing snowballs, bringing about a new ice age! These are the powers of winter! And there are a lot out there, these are just the Top 6!

6 Fun Things I’m Looking Forward to in 2012

If we don’t count the bottle of Mountain Dew that I finished off that was still left over from 2011, then so far my 2012 New Year’s resolution to not drink soda is doing just fine! Thanks for asking. But a barren year of nothing to drink but water, milk and the tears of hungry orphans is not the only thing to look forward to in 2012. There’s a whole lot of crap going on, some of it better than others.

Also, it’s supposedly the last year on Earth. So there’s that.

Star Wars in 3D is not on this list

2011 was a great year for geeky pop culture. We had an amazing year of superhero movies, with Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Green Lantern and the X-Men: First Class. TV was pretty neat, seeing the end of Smallville and the start of Game of Thrones. Everything from video games, comic books, novels and horse racing had a lot going on last year. Can 2012 even stack up? Well it’s going to give it the old college try. Here are 6 Fun Things I’m Looking Forward to in 2012. But rather than just individual things, they’re more like categories.

The Top 6 Superheroes Who Celebrate Hannukah

You might not think that religion plays any part in the world of comic book superheroes. But those characters are people just like everyone else, and they have jobs, favorite movies, personalities and faiths. Religion doesn’t come up very often in comic books, but just like in any story, it can be a powerful narrative tool. Or it can just be a fun bit of trivia that fleshes out a character.

This is apparently a thing. Go Menorah Man!

And since tonight is the last night of Hannukah, let’s take a look at the Top 6 Jewish superheroes! Because I have been posting way too much Christmas stuff over the past few weeks.

The 6 Greatest Comic Book Santas

Let’s get this out of the way first: Santa Claus is real. Totally real. He’s big, he’s jolly, his white beard is legend and he lives on the North Pole making toys for all the good little girls and boys of the world. He uses time zones to his advantage when flying around the world in one night, and his reindeer fly using magick. Boom, mystery solved! If he wasn’t real, why would I, a 28-year-old man, still be getting presents marked ‘From: Santa’ under the Christmas tree? Can’t explain that!

Also not every kid in the world celebrates Christmas, so that cuts down on his time considerably.

It also helps that he's sometimes a vampire

Santa Claus is such a popular guy that he’s one of the biggest celebrities on the planet, and is always appearing in movies, TV shows and more. Whether he’s selling Coca Cola, being put on trial on 34th Street or getting his testicles electrocuted by terrorists in Iraq on South Park, Santa Claus spends a lot of his free time in show business. He’s even made more than a few appearances in comic books. Back in the 40s and 50s, Santa had his own funny books. And Silver Age superheroes like old-timey Batman and Superman were always willing to lend the jolly old elf a hand. But he’s not always portrayed as quite so jolly. Or quite so non-homicidal.

And we’re not talking about stories starring a mall Santa or just a guy in a Santa costume – like the time vampire-slayer Blade had to kill a mall Santa who was possessed by a murderous demon – we’re talking the real deal Kris Kringle himself!

Read on to see the 6 best comic book appearances of Santa Claus!

6 TV Shows with Great Christmas Episodes

Everybody loves a good Christmas special, especially me. Whether its the old-fashioned classics, like Rudolph or Charlie Brown, or maybe it’s newer movies that are particularly awesome, like Elf. Christmas has always been solid creative fodder for some really great entertainment. The combination of cheerfulness, the Christmas Spirit and some awesome characters and mythology makes for good storytelling.

All I want for Christmas...is this.

Nowadays, we don’t get a lot of those standalone Christmas specials, like Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or that one where Santa Claus teachers the Winter Warlock to walk again. Don’t pretend you don’t know the words.

Instead we get Christmas episodes of our favorite TV shows! Here are 6 TV Shows that have Great Christmas Episodes.
