Top 6 Canadian Superheroes

Happy Canada Day, everybody! I guess, technically, Canada Day was Monday, but I think we’re still good to celebrate the best and coolest Canadian superheroes all this week! Eh? And you’d be surprised how many comic book characters hail from the Great White North, and how popular some of them have become. Almost as popular as Mounties and maple syrup! I also realize that tomorrow is the Fourth of July, a much more American holiday, but I already did a list of patriotic superheroes a few years ago. We like to spread the wealth here at Henchman-4-Hire and recognize other awesome nationalities.

Oh, Canada!

Canada is a proud land with a heroic and industrious people. And you may not believe this, but not all of their superheroes wear maple leaves or represent Mounties – only most of them. Most Canadian superheroes owe a lot to the rich history and culture of that great land, and who could be prouder than someone representing their country? Kind of like the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen! Anyway, on with the list of Canada’s most awesome superheroes!

6 Things I Want to See in the Dr. Strange Movie

Dr. Strange movie rumors have started percolating across the Internet, and a big announcement is expected at Comic-Con this year. The Sorcerer Supreme has long been hinted at being in pre-production, but it seems the time has finally come to turn those rumors into fact. Good for Dr. Strange. Personally, I’ve never been a fan, but I definitely encourage Marvel Studios to reach beyond their comfort zone for new movies. Nobody expected Iron Man to be such a huge hit, after all.

So how exactly is Marvel going to fit Dr. Strange into their ever-growing Movieverse?

They’ll have to make some room

For those who don’t know, Dr. Strange is a superhero who does magic. There’s a big dangerous world of black magic and mysticism out there, and Dr. Strange is our defender, using his own power to keep us safe from evil sorcerers and Voldemorts. But Dr. Strange is not just some Copperfield-esque stage magician. He really knows magic, with a whole host of spells, artifacts and incantations at his disposal. The Marvel Movieverse has touched upon magic before – through Thor, Loki and Asgard – but never on the scale of Dr. Strange. He’ll bring a whole new style to the movies, and I for one am looking forward to a Dr. Strange movie. Being the helpful blogger that I am, here are 6 suggests for Marvel Studios on how to make a great Dr. Strange movie!

The 6 Most Evil Fathers in Comics

Father’s Day was this past weekend, and like all dutiful sons in the Internet Age, I marked this occasion by writing ‘Happy Father’s Day’ on Facebook and assumed my father would see it. He and my mom have progressed to the point of getting their own Facebook page, but only so they can read statuses, not so they can actually post anything or interact. Parents, amiright? But as I looked around Facebook, I saw people really going the extra mile and writing nicer, longer messages, buying their fathers gifts and actually spending time with their dads. But I’m no good at fishing, I have yet to give him a grandchild, and I’m not making millions of dollars in a high paying job. What kind of son am I?

So I decided to celebrate my father with the one skill I do possess: writing! I decided to dedicate this week’s List of Six to comic book fathers  – but in my research, I discovered something pretty horrible: most comic book fathers are totally evil!

Pa Kent was a drunk

This list was going to be titled ‘The 6 Coolest Fathers in Comics’, but once I actually started looking up comic book dads, I discovered that most of them are bad to the bone. For every Pa Kent, who raised his son to be the world’s greatest hero, there are half a dozen evil dads, who often force their children to become dark reflections of themselves. So I decided it might actually be a lot more fun to do a list of the 6 most truly evil fathers in comic books. Though it should be noted that this list is not a reflection of my own father, who clearly raised me into one of the coolest, most handsome bloggers on the Internet!

6 Video Games That Need to Make a Comeback

Video games have become an industry of repetition. Every major sport has several new licensed video games coming out every year. Gamers everywhere salivate at the coming of the next Call of Duty or Medal of Honor. The granddaddy of video gaming, Nintendo, has built its reputation on bringing back Mario, Link, Donkey Kong and more year after year for game after game. Sequels rule the roost even more than in Hollywood.

But somehow, amidst all this madness, some of the greatest games of all time fall by the wayside. Brilliant concepts, amazing gameplay and truly unique and original ideas get tossed in the garbage so that the tried and true sequels can keep going.

This is never going to happen no matter what

I’m no expert on how the industry works. Maybe the studios close for financial reasons. Maybe the licensing rights expire. Maybe it’s some kind of dark sorcery. All I know is that there were some pretty amazing video games in my youth that desperately need to be updated for today’s market. They need to come back, embrace the better graphics and game engines, and blow our fragile little minds all over again. Here are 6 video games that I think are overdue for a triumphant return!

6 Characters Severely Missing From DC’s New 52

When DC Comics rebooted their entire universe and redesigned all of their characters in the fall of 2011, it was a bold move that has been both a blessing and a curse. They saw increased sales and media attention, but at the same time, they’ve made a lot of big mistakes, and have dealt with their fair share of bad press. Comic book fans will be debating the success or failure of the New 52 reboot for years to come. But with any reboot, the biggest changes have been to the characters themselves. And these changes run the gamut from something as small as a costume change (Superman, Wonder Woman) to having their entire history rewritten (Cyborg, Martian Manhunter). Heck, Aquaman is now one of the biggest and coolest heroes in the world.

But not everybody got off so well. There some characters who seem to have been wiped off the face of the Earth!

Missing. Call the police.

Longtime Flash Wally West is nowhere to be found in the rebooted universe. Nor is former Wonder Girl Donna Troy. And both of those characters are very popular, each with their own huge fanbase. Yet DC hasn’t done anything with them, nor do they seem to have any plans for the characters. And i’ts not just Wally West and Donna Troy. A whole host of DC Comics characters have yet to make the transition into the New 52 universe, including some of my favorite characters. So if any DC editors are reading, here is my list of six characters who need to show up in the New 52, as well as suggestions of where I’d put them – if, you know, you wanted to hire me. Just sayin’.
