6 Things I Hate That Everybody Else Loves
A couple months ago, I wrote a List of Six about things I love that everybody else seems to hate. A few of you suggested in the comments that I do the reverse list, so here we are. But this list was much harder to put together. ‘Hate’ is a much stronger word than ‘Love’, and I’m just not a hateful guy. I’m mostly apathetic to things I don’t like, especially when it comes to pop culture. Sure there are things in this world that I hate, like having to scrape off my car windshield on an icy morning or when my Internet connection dies.
Or peas, I absolutely hate peas. Worst food in the world!
But this is a pop culture blog, and I want to keep it that way. So I racked my brain and tried to think of six things in pop culture that I hate but everybody else seems to love. And it can’t just be things that are popular or successful that I hate. I despise the cult of celebrity that surrounds the Kardashians, but they remain popular – but they’re only popular to that certain cult of people. Most of us would readily agree that the Kardashians are terrible. So they don’t count.
I think I’ve got a solid list. Here are 6 things that I hate that most people, especially my fellow geeks, seem to love.
I apologize in advance if I start going on some vicious rants. And as always, please feel free to share some of your own hates in the comments!
6 Things I Want to See on Gotham
As hesitant as I may be to embrace the new Gotham TV show on FOX, I can still admit that it could be an amazing show. Gotham will be loosely based on Gotham Central, one of my favorite comic book series of all time, and one I have been praising as a potential TV adaptation from the very beginning. Any true Batman fan will tell you that Batman is only as cool as he is because of the world in which he inhabits, and Gotham City is one of the greatest settings in all of fiction.
The potential for Gotham to be a great show is through the roof!
In theory.
The producers and writers could still mess it up big time. Weren’t we all giggling with glee at the potential behind Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? That show is only mostly OK more than halfway through it first season, when we all expected it to be Firefly reborn (or at least I did). Gotham could go either way. Brilliant or bupkis. Glorious or garbage. Well if the good people at FOX want Gotham to be a success, they should take my phone calls and listen to the 6 things I want to see in the show!
The Top 6 Fatty Fat Fat Comic Book Characters
Not all superheroes are hunky, athletic, Chris Hemsworth-types, you know. Some of them actually reflect the average American body type, which is the nice way of saying that there are fat superheroes out there. They may not get any shirtless scenes in the movies, but they are just as heroic (or villainous) as the Captain Americas or the Jokers of the world. Just because they’re packing on the poundage does not make them any less cool – or maybe that’s just what I keep telling myself while I’m eating a tube of raw cookie dough and watching Fat Albert reruns.
It’s true, Internet. Your favorite comic book geek/Internet blogger is on the chunky side. But rather than be ashamed of it, today we’re going to celebrate it! Here are the 6 best overweight characters in comics. And when I finally start that diet, maybe I’ll do a list of the 6 best svelte characters in comics.
6 Women I’d Pick for the Fearless Defenders
Picking my own superhero team lineups has become a bit of a game here at Henchman-4-Hire, one I love playing and sharing with you readers. Who among us hasn’t thought up their own ultimate Avengers lineup in their heads? Who among us hasn’t wished for a chance to pitch to Marvel their awesome new X-Force roster?
How about the Fearless Defenders?
This list started as characters I would add to Cullen Bunn’s Fearless Defenders series – but the comic got the ax after only a dozen issues. I didn’t read it as much as I should have, but the idea of a women-only superhero team (or at least one with a single token male) could be a lot of fun, and it definitely makes a statement in the world of comics. So join me, won’t you, in coming up with our own ideal Fearless Defenders squad!
My Top 6 Favorite South Park Episodes
As you read this, I am hip deep in cows, fart jokes and biting social satire on a quest to uncover the Stick of Truth! The long-awaited South Park RPG was released yesterday, and I tell you without a hint of remorse that I dipped into my savings to buy the game as soon as possible. So far, Stick of Truth is as glorious as we all hoped it would be. And I am definitely in a South Park mood.
So how about we talk about our favorite episodes?
I have been a South Park fan since before my dad would even let me watch it. I can still remember begging him to record an episode so that my brother and I could watch it later, because it aired after our bedtime. It was the first season episode where the boys get into a race with Death because Stan’s grandpa wants to die…or something. My memory is fuzzy. But what’s not fuzzy is that unlike other venerable animated series, South Park has remained as funny and as sharp as ever even though they’re nearing 20 seasons.
Putting together this list was tough, but I think I have my narrowed down favorites! And please share yours in the comments. I’d love to hear them.
